Being realistic is what's wrong with Gopher football?!?!
Our AD has done everything but come out and say at a press conference that Leach is not a candidate. Voice your opinion to the new president when he's hiring the new AD, that would be a worthwhile pursuit. We are not going to get a 180 on the Leach issue especially with a lame duck Maturi in charge of things. What are you going to threaten him with, firing?
Its about time you take the maroon and gold colored glasses off and wake up. We're not going to get a Bob Stoops level hire where the program is now. Hire a solid, good, proven coach with good character and start rebuilding this program back towards respectability, something we haven't had in awhile. Heck we haven't been relevant in DECADES and you're expecting this to be some "hot job" for up and comers?
Swallow your pride, put your nose to the grindstone and let's work hard to get this program moving in the right direction. I personally believe Kill brings that kind of mentality to the program and that's the kind of mentality I respect in people. Work hard, no excuses, overcome adversity.
"Being realistic" = "Heck we haven't been relevant in DECADES."
You seem to be telling us that the road to reversing the DECADES of irrelevance is to keep on doing exactly what we've been doing over those DECADES. Aim low. Settle. Keep your expectations 'realistic'. Coach must be Minnesota Nice. Beat a couple cupcakes in NC play, win a couple close ones against similar B10 programs, keep the conference losses to the big boys respectable, get to 6-5 and a minor bowl, and consider that a real achievement. Kill might even be able to do that, but the more likely scenario is we're all back here in 2015 speculating on the new Gopher coach.
Well, good luck with that. I want more. I want to see the Gophers playing on New Years Day. I want to see 'five star recruit Jimmy JoeBob Bignfast committed to the UofM' today.' I want the next coach to turn the program around, big way.
I don't think Kill can do that. Maybe Leach (or Mullen) could. He might even work hard, offer no excuses, and along the way, overcome adversity.
And for the record, "But our esteemed AD, held in such high regard around the state, won't interview him" isn't a good enough answer for me, true as it may be. I can't for the life of me even understand why he's allowed to conduct this search, especially since I absolutely don't think this is some 'hot job' for up and comers...which is why we're even talking about a C-lister like Kill in the first place. Tubby Smith fell into Maturi's lap, and he was smart enough to say yes. Leach has apparently fallen into Maturi's lap and he won't even say hello?
We won't get Leach, I agree. But we should. That's a crying shame, and I'm not going to pretend it isn't.
