KFAN Barreiro and AP Sports Guy Discussing Scheduling

So you say the bolded, then say people are thin-skinned about the media? You don't believe Souhan was being nasty in his article?

Really?

I was talking about the Barreiro interview and not the Souhan piece. And even in the case of Souhan, there is this thing called the first amendment and Souhan gets to pretty much write what he wants and everyone gets to react the way they want. I guess I don't break a sweat over this stuff, but others do. Fine.

Actually SJSU returns atleast 9 starters on the offense that was a primary reason they finished in the top 25, so I would say it is a pretty big deal. This game will be tough for us, probably tougher than Iowa

I wouldn't sell Iowa short, I think we beat them but it will be a close game for sure.

9 starters on offense with a new coach, switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and I don't know how many they lost on defense. Comparing last years team to this years team doesn't make sense. Just like comparing last years gophers to this years, I don't think it's applicable.

Last, no one said it wasn't a big deal, if sjsu was ranked in the top 25 currently I think the schedule would look better...they aren't so currently the schedule looks weak. Not sure why anyone argues this, our schedule is really soft THIS year.

I guess I'll just never get Gopher fans bitching about the non-conference schedule this year. My point was that San Jose St. just happens to be as good as half or more of those "bcs" conference teams you named. Why bitch about one season where there is no bcs team in non-conference? My other point was what a debacle the program was in when Kill was hired, serious lack of depth and serious lack of upperclassmen. My last point was that not many people wanted this job with the old AD and old President. Seems to me to be pretty petty to be bitching about something like that. Seems to me there are more important things to be worried/concerned about than playing one low to mid level bcs team in non-conference. I think there's a bigger picture out there.

No one was bitching, they were calling a spade a spade. I will never understand why some gopher fans get so pissed when other gophers fans are objective.

For a program like the Gophers, scheduling is a tricky proposition. Ideally, you would like to have a non-conf schedule that is A. attractive to ticket-buyers and B. presents a challenge to the team, but is still C. winnable.

Plus, you're trying to set this up while scheduling games, in some cases, 4 and 5 years out. A team that looks like a patsy now could turn out to be a much more difficult opponent in 4 years - or a team that looks like a tough opponent now could go in the tank - depending on coaching changes, NCAA violations, injuries, academics, and so forth.

What I would like to see when the B1G goes to the 9-game schedule is this: for the non-conf games, 1 bottom-feeder, 1 mid-level opponent, and 1 team from a BCS conference. But, remember this - if a team goes 2-1 in non-conf, they will have to go at least 4-5 in the B1G schedule to become bowl-eligible. A program is going to have to be very confident to schedule "name" opponents in non-conf. In a perfect world, I would be thrilled to see the Gopher program become so strong that they can schedule a non-conf game against a top-10 ranked team - but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I agree. I think programs like Iowa State, Oregon State, North Carolina (yep I typed that) NC State, Utah State, etc.. would be great but tough to make happen every year.

Then there are the gopher fans (like myself) who get pissed when others, specifically the media, choose not to be objective. I would agree, this year's non-conference schedule is pretty soft. Makes sense to me to do it that way. But they've scheduled Cal and USC in the past....TCU the next couple of years. THAT is objectivity. I just get sick of the pot shots that won't also acknowledge they don't ONLY schedule cupcakes.
