Kaler needs to get this done NOW!

I can't see a scenario unfolding that does not lead to the hiring of Claeys. As a total body of work vs. the #15 and #3 teams in the nation the past two weeks, I don't know how you can argue he has "lost" the job. Clearly they have been well prepared. Clearly they have a huge amount of fight in them. The team does not fold. (Unlike a lot of its "fans".). The offensive plan and execution have been hugely questionable. The folks at The U doing the hiring need to get it done, but get agreement that an objective review of the staff will be done at the end of the year. And that Claeys is open to make whatever changes are necessarily. Including finding greater capability to move the offense forward. Essentially, it's not a lock that as long as Claeys is here, the entire Kill posse is along for the ride.

I don't need approval, people here need to wake up. Just keeping it close isn't good enough. It is like 99% of people here just want a moral victory every single time.

Just so damn gutless.

I'm tired of that crap.

So just how many times have you been fired. From your posts, I'm guessing a lot.

99% of the homers here ARE happy to "only" lose by a few TDs.

That is the truth, even if most here are not happy to admit it.

I'm tired of the status quo. I never really like Kill it but it was like attacking Jesus or something around here.....the homers would just "kill" you if you didn't care for his approach.

Now he quits and his crap staff is even worse and people immediately NEED to hand his staff 4+ year contracts. The insecurity is amazing.
After watching the last 5 years how can you possibly call this a crap coaching staff?

Blah blah blah.

You are injecting your own bias. I have nothing to do with play station. So give that moronic angle up.

Wins have nothing to do with that.

Last week they coached to lose and they did the same this week. They basically forfeit the first half of every game by doing absolutely nothing on first and second down. Congrats on having stupid coaches. You can't just give up entire halves of quarters and not even try to score points.

Based on your title, you should fire yourself.

This simply, Claeys and Sawvel have coached their assess off. Limegrover is junk. Find a hot sh*t OC and sign these guys

I'm not a Limegrover fan either but Leidner is finally starting to look more in control of the passing game than he ever has. Do we really want to make him learn a new playbook now?

You are obviously unfamiliar with the concept of truth. Not coming out with pitchforks and torches doesn't mean that they are happy with losses or settling for moral victories. I liked 2013. I liked 2014. I'm sorry if those seasons made you so unhappy. 2015 is disappointment, but just because people aren't coming out with torches and pitchforks isn't a reason to throw a tantrum. Grow up.

You can call Kill a crap coach with a crap staff all you want. He's a well-respected coach, and was the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2014, so a whole lot of people who know football don't agree with you. If you don't think Claeys will take this team in the right direction and want someone else, that's fine, but understand that other people just might disagree with you.

It will be most entertaining and enjoyable when word breaks that TC and his STAFFERS are taking over the Gopher Football Program with new long term security. What will make it especially great lies in the fact that some will hate this hire.. Personally, I am going to enjoy watching this whole process unfold. I LOVE the 2016 and 2017 schedules! May those who could never be satisfied grow increasingly and painfully impatient.

Soon... the announcement will be made public. Good luck to TC & his STAFFERS

Serious question - what would you consider "success?"
Kill - 4 full seasons as Head coach - 2 8-win seasons
Mason - 10 seasons - 1 10-win season, 2 8-win seasons.
Warmath - 18 seasons - 3 8-win seasons
Bierman - 16 seasons - 4 8-win seasons.

The Gophers have had 1 10-win season in the last 110 years. I'm going to say that again: The Gophers have had 1 10-win season in the last 110 years. Other than 2003, the most wins the Gophers have had in a season since 1905 is 8 wins - on 11 occasions. That's an average of 1 8-win season every 10 years.

So, Kill has 2 8-win seasons, and he doesn't meet your standards.

Again, I ask - what is your standard for success? You seem to be demanding a level of success that this program has achieved once in the last 110 years.

This team is knocking on the door! I have to say been pretty impressed with the last two game plans. We are so close if not for two bad plays tonight we win this game. I know we lost but almost feels like we won. Sign him up this week

A vote for Claeys for moral victories guy, check.

Jerry Kill and his staff have taken an inordinate share of gut-punches since deciding to get into coaching. Mostly they've been underestimated when they took over each program, but Minnesota fans seemed the most disgusted and hopeless of all. IMO, they've raised the level of performance in virtually every aspect of the Gopher program.

Nessler and Blackledge made a point that programs are left in better shape by Kill and his staff at every stop. This one is no different. Whoever takes over has the potential to make a big splash right away. Selfishly I'd like to see TC and Co. be the ones to reap some rewards for the effort they've put in.

*WHIFF* I knew there was a PH like stench to this thread.

Get it done before the 2016 class falls apart. That class is Jerry's legacy.

This is the worst reason to make a coaching hire. As I said in another thread:

a) 9 of the 17 kids are from Minnesota. Those guys aren't going anywhere.
b) Kids flip all the time regardless of coaching situation. Sure, Snelson might flip, but people have been worried about that since the day he committed.
c) We are just guessing that there are some number of players who would flip due to a prolonged coaching search, but would stay because of Claeys.
d) Between those 3 factors you're looking at maybe 1 or 2 guys who would choose to go elsewhere merely because of the uncertainty.
e) There's only about a 50% chance that any particular player ends up making a real impact.

Finding the best possible coach is 100x more important than holding on to 1 or 2 recruits. Think of it this way. In retrospect would you rather have had Brewster + 2 extra recruits or Kill without those recruits? Every single person who has ever posted on this board would choose the latter.

I'm not saying that Claeys is the same as Brewster, just making a point that you don't make coaching decisions based on retaining recruits.

The no-brainer move is to make Claeys the guy but with a low buyout. Then after the 2016 season our new AD can assess the situation.

Patrick Reusse @1500ESPN_Reusse
Wise cracks aside, great work from Claeys having Gophers w/ this much fight after last week's crusher.

Patrick Reusse @1500ESPN_Reusse
2015 Gophs have played much better for Claeys than they did Kill for any 2-wk period.

Anytime anybody posts anything on this thread can someone just repost this after? This is exactly the right move whether you think Claeys is the right guy or not.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that the U give him a deal comparable to Kill. I think a three year, roughly $4mil with a $1mil buyout after '16 is a pretty reasonable deal. Give Claeys the option to renegotiate terms after next season if the team gets back to 8+ wins. I would hope both parties could live with that.

Not fair to include Bierman and Warmath in this breakdown. Many of those seasons only had 8 games total and both guys won National Titles. However if you start at 1972 with Stoll and move forward you have Stoll, Salem, Holtz, Gutey, and Wacker all with 0 - 8 win seasons. So the argument can certainly be made that Kill's success is up there at the top from the last 40+ years of Gopher football.

My standard for success in the current Big Ten structure is being a factor in the division race with a chance to win it. Last year we were, this year we won't be.

99% of the people who post ignorant rants on this forum are equally ignorant about the Gophers. If someone disagrees, they are "happy with mediocrity", "play to lose", and just don't get it.

They think they know football because they watch the Vikings/NFL and do well with their fantasy football team. They likely haven't been to a CFB in years.
They think they are Gopher fans because they live in MN and happened to come across the Gopher game on Prime Time TV when looking for an SEC Game. They likely know no details on what this staff has done to turn around the culture of this team in just 5 years.
They assume the Gophers are underachieving because of the coaches because they lead their XBOX team to 50 points a game and have a great 4th down conversion rate. Why not hire Dungy?

I'm not saying you fit this description, I am saying odds are 99% you do. Please leave.

He's been banned.

Sid just went off on Kaler on the Sports Huddle. He was imploring Goetz "if you have the authority,...", which to me suggests that it is Kaler's call. Mona said he thought they'd get it done last week but the president was travelling...

I didn't say not to hire Claeys. I said not to hire Claeys just to keep recruits. And since there's no other reason to make a move now, it means waiting until after the season and reassessing.

Let's see. If I were a D-1 coach, I would sign a low salary, low buyout, short term contract.

Yup, that's what I'd do.

It is hard to argue these two things at the same time:

TC is an in demand coach

And

Minnesota could sign him with a short term low buyout contract

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If we hire TC or anyone else, it should be structured as a LONG TERM hire. It should not be an experiment with a cheap salary and easy buyout. If TC is the guy, then make him the guy and let the coaching staff, recruits, fans, etc. know who we are and where we are going. If we structure it as a short term deal, the recruits, coaching staff and fans will see through it and react accordingly. Let's do this right!

I agree with you but the problem is the U is not in a position right now to do this right given the state of the Athletic Department. In order to do it right you need to have the AD in place first and that may not happen until next year sometime according to some reports. Claeys is the easy solution because he is in place already, hard to know if he is the "right" option.
