JP Macura commits to Xavier

I'm sure JP won't take it personally, because I hope every non-Gopher D-1 player and team fails. It's part of being a fan of a team. In order for the Gophers to succeed in the Big Ten, other teams must fail, both on the nights they're playing the Gophers, and otherwise. In order for that to happen, the players on those teams must fail. And I want the Gophers to win the National Championship every year. I think most fans ultimately hope that for their team, even if it's unrealistic. I hope their hopes are dashed, and mine and those of other Gopher fans are realized. JP had a chance to have me as a fan, by playing for the team I support. He chose to have the Xavier fans as his fans. I'm not saying he's a bad person for choosing otherwise, nor that I hope he's a failure in life. But I hope he doesn't succeed in becoming a good basketball player, and that his Xavier teammates also fail to succeed, as do every D-1 basketball player who doesn't play for us. As to your post, I may have misunderstood it, but I think booing a high school kid at home games in his own gym in front of his parents may be a bit much. It wasn't a judgment on you, though, or anything. We're all on the same side here.

Well put. And actually I agree with you.

I've never heard of anyone having anything but the utmost respect for Hoffarber. He was the very definition of a fan favorite. Don't mistake people being upset at Tubby for not recruiting a PG and forcing Hoffarber to play PG as some sort of hatred toward Hoffarber.

Confirmed.

why is staying in state such a good thing? Always think it is best for a persons growth to venture away if paying for it is not a problem. folks are so provincial. Minnesota is not looked at a top choice nationally and for local kids to be able to go someplace else has a appeal especially a true college town. Give Pitino time, he just got the job.

Yeah why should Kevon Looney even think about going to Wisconsin? Sam Dekker was a fool for picking the Badgers.

And how do we treat hometown kids? You'd have to ask Hoffarber, Weber, and now Nelson. Seems the belittlement of them by fans was and is excessive while we restrain criticism of out-of-state kids.

I think Joe Coleman is a better example of an in-state guy that some fans really didn't like. I noticed a bit of a "good riddance" treatment by some when it was announced he was going to St. Mary's, and I also recall him being called a diva and a locker room cancer around the time he decided to transfer.

Al Nolen wasn't a Tubby recruit but he was on the roster.

Rodney was also a fan favorite for the majority of the fan base.

I remember him getting some hate toward the end of this past season, think I saw the words "addition by subtraction" mentioned with his name once or twice. For the majority the fan base though, I suppose you're right, I liked him too.

This is disappointing since he seemed to be the guy most of us thought we had the best shot at out of anyone in the 2014 class. Pitino was kinda getting my hopes up for this class with all the high-end players he was offering, but I'm starting to get a little bit worried. A commit from Nairn would be a relief.

I think for some it is great to stay at home if they want to. Some choose that for reasons dear to them. Dekker grew up a life long Badger fan. Looney is serious about UW but is very interested in Duke,Florida and Tenn.. Tenn,. he has family there. Most great programs have rosters of kids from all over. Check out every top 20 programs roster of where they are from. The majority want to play for a great coach, winning program, great school, nice climate and on and on.

Didn't think I needed to include the obvious statement that he was also terrible at keeping recruits from transferring. You named two PGs that left the program when we needed them most. And like you said, Tubby didn't recruit Nolen.

I think this one will sting a little more than when Jones commits to Duke. Thought JP was going to stay home and be loved like the Hoff.

Anyways good luck to him. I hope we get the chance to knock him out of the tournament.

I'm extremely bitter. I feel like JP led us along. All that crap about wanting to be the first to commit to the program was pure bs. I hope he gets booed at every game this year.

At the very least, it seems like he coveted the feather in his cap of being offered by Minnesota. He seemed to be genuinely pleased by it, but then time went on and he didn't commit. In retrospect, it may have been all about the feather and the ego satisfaction of getting the Gopher offer.

I am kind of getting this vibe too. I think he wanted to be included with the Big 3 as much as possible and a major part of that is being offered by the local school.

Well said, although this will be a very unpopular sentiment on this board.

Because some of his comments are ridiculous. They all very well may be true but he speaks as if he knows they are true. 100% certain? Yeah I doubt it. He has no clue if Pitino was "nowhere near the school's first choice".

Go Gophers!!

Oh my, Rich.

Wow, not sure what to think. I mean Whitehead doesn't seem like he's going to make a decision anytime soon. Wonder if this is really true? We do have 4 schollies to hand out. But I do believe the number one reason JP is going to X is playing time right away. He mentioned it in almost all of his interviews.

Kimani must REALLY feel good about Whitehead.

That scares me. It seems like Whitehead has been all over the place, and that he enjoys the fact that nobody can nail down what he's thinking. Obviously Kimani knows him very well though.

Its not true at all. Macuras coach tweeted at jerry meyer saying completely false

Hopefully we hired Les Miles and Mike Gundy to lead the recruiting efforts.

Everybody's saying it's not true. But that steam had to come from somewhere. Very odd.

Exactly. It doesn't look good to say "well I begged Pitino to take me and he said no, therefore I settled on Xavier. Oh well."

Exactly what I'm wondering. No way either the Gophers or Macura would want a report like this out there, so they're going to deny it like crazy. But it's a pretty crazy thing to make up out of thin air, so I'm imagining that he heard it from somewhere. Bizarre.

lol, would you expect the coach to confirm his kid was turned down? no way will the u ever confirm it, so the coach throws that out there knowing that even if it did happen that the truth will never come out. i don't believe jerry meyer any more than i believe the coach.

Doogie is also hearing it's not true, which leads me to believe it may actually be true.

I could even see a combination of the two scenarios. JP goes to Pitino and tells him that he is ready to commit. Pitino tells him to give it a little more time to make sure, but doesn't tell him "No." JP is turned off and decides to go to his 1B choice, Xavier.

If this is in fact the case, I can't imagine Rich would be too happy about it getting leaked that he passed on a top 100 guy in his first season on the job. We know a PG is a must for 2014, as well as a PF or C, so ON THE SURFACE, it could make sense that if you are THAT confident about getting Whitehead, that you may ask JP to hold off, not wanting two SG's. That being said, you have to be awfully careful about this type of decision. Very interesting situation.

As far as the immediate playing time goes, I don't understand it. Xavier has had a very good basketball program for some time, and compared to the rest of his offers, I don't think he'll find immediate minutes at Xavier than he would at any of his other suitors.

Gophers may have incentive to leak it and deny it.

Whitehead obviously would see it, see how much Pitino wants him. Also is similar to the "we cooled on him" defense for not landing a recruit. It can look like we just didn't want JP, that's all. He didn't choose Xavier over us.
