Spoke to Bothell AD Yonni Mills this afternoon to double-check the schedule for Bothell's Josh Martin, who signed with Minnesota. They open the season Friday at Eastlake.

Mills is a big supporter of Martin.

"He is super talented and he is just the nicest kid. Good for you guys. I am glad that he found someplace that he is happy with, because he just deserves to tear it up. He is just the greatest kid."

"You will really enjoy him. He has just been really fun for us to work with. We are excited to see what he does. I am sure that he is going to do fabulous things."

"We might not be as highly ranked as we were last year, because one of our kids is at UCLA and the other one is at the University of Idaho, but we could potentially do better in state with the team that we have this year, so it is a pretty incredible team still."

Thanks for that report. That also helps explain why his season averages for last year were not off the charts- two D1 kids on the same roster. It will be interesting to watch his numbers as the leader of the team this year.

Meanwhile Carlos Morris is averaging 15.6 ppg in his first 6 games.

Thanks to Chris Monter, we get reports from guys we don't know much about. Which tells me, Gopher Coaches and staff know more than we do.

Thanks Chris. Really looking forward to seeing how Josh does this season and looking forward to having him here next Fall!

Go Gophers!!

The thing I continually read about Martin is of a high motor, great attitude, full of energy, etc. This makes me very optimistic as to the type of player he will emerge into during his Golden Gopher career; how many talented players have been waylaid through the years due to lethargic play and attitude issues?

I hope he has a big year. We have a giant hole at PF, and he's the only recruit right now who could play the position.

Anyone know of a good site to keep up on current recruits stats? I just get curious throughout the year

Nice!

"Josh Martin scored 29 points Friday night but it wasn't enough to lift the Bothell High School boys basketball team past Eastlake. The Cougars scored 23 fourth-quarter points during the 71-66 loss at Eastlake High School in Sammamish.

How does Washington basketball compare to other states at the high school level, good? bad? Is Josh's team suppose to be one of the better schools? On the surface 29, 14 and 5 sounds like a hell of a game.

Good question! All I could find out was grades 10-12 were 1700 students. Those type of numbers are impressive almost anywhere. I have a real good feeling about Martin.

Here is my take on the level of basketball out in Washington as someone who has lived out west for a decent amount of time. Washington High School basketball is pretty quality especially over in the Seattle area where Josh Martin is from. I'd say on a typical year Washington is a slightly higher level than Minnesota, but they are comparable sized states. For the class of 2014, Washington has kids committed to Louisville, California, Minnesota, Washington, Washington State.

There are 6 classes of high school hoops in Washington and Seattle has a lot of good players. The Spokane area also typically has some good teams and Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities area also occasionally have good teams.

Notable NCAA Players and NBA Players from Washington
NCAA--Joe Harris (Virginia), Gary Bell Jr. (Gonzaga), Zach Lavine (UCLA and Martin's teammate last year), Josh Smith (Georgetown formerly of UCLA)

John Stockton, Peyton Siva, Avery Bradley, Spencer Hawes, Adam Morrison, Isaiah Thomas (kings), Brandon Roy, Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, Terrance Williams (Louisville), Scott Pollard, Dan Dickau, Will Conroy, Brian Scalabrine, Quinn Snyder (coach), Aaron Brooks, Luke Ridnour, Martell Webster, Rodney Stuckey, Marvin Williams, Doug Christie, Detlef Schrempf, Michael Dickerson, Jason Terry, Mustafa Shakur.

Needless to say, Martin's stats in his first game are impressive and he is playing good competition. One of my friends currently coaches at a JUCO college in Idaho that recruits the Seattle area extensively and told me that Martin was a very good signing for Minnesota...he also said that DeAndre Mathieu a very solid pick-up for the Gophers as well. I have a feeling that Martin will develop into a really good player in college.

Nice, it's good to hear that Josh is putting up great numbers against good competition in the state, can't wait to see him and our other recruits next year

quick look at other local players to sign collegiately.

*****

Eugene Artison Jr. (Franklin): The 6-foot-8, 185-pound forward signed with Fresno State. A three-star recruit by Scout.com, Artison reportedly had interest from Cal and Oregon State. Artison had given his verbal commitment to Fresno State about a week before the signing period opened.

Josh Martin (Bothell): Martin signed with Minnesota after also considering Florida State and Pittsburgh. Martin was named to the KingCo 4A Second Team last season in his first year at Bothell after transferring from Seattel Prep. Martin is a 6-foot-8 forward. Here is a story from the Star Tribune after Martin gave his verbal commitment in September.

Tramaine Isabell (Garfield): Isabell is expected to sign with Washington State tomorrow. The 6-foot-1 guard will play his senior season at Garfield after transferring from Lakeside. He will enroll in prep school for a year after completing high school according to Cougfan.com. Isabell averaged 19 points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals per game last year.

Jason Todd (Jackson): The reigning Washington Gatorade Player of the Year signed with Portland today. The 6-foot-6, 200-pounder averaged 21.5 points and 10.8 rebounds last season in leading Jackson to the state championship game. You can read Portland’s official release with more information about Todd here and our post last season after he won the Gatorade POY here.

Jacob Lampkin (O’Dea): Lampkin is one of two area players to sign with Pacific today. The 6-foot-8 forward/center averaged 15.2 points and 10.0 rebounds for O’Dea last season.

Kaleb Warner (Mercer Island): Warner will join Lampkin at Pacific. The 6-foot-6 guard/forward played on the same Emerald City Basketball Academy AAU team with Lampkin and averaged 16.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game a season ago for Mercer Island.

You can read about both Lampkin and Warner here in Pacific’s official release.

Will Ferris (Newport): Ferris signed to play with Eastern Washington. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard averaged 15.1 points per game as a junior and was named to the 4A KingCo second team. You can read more

You forgot to write up the merits of the infamous Doug Wrenn!

Our boy Josh putting up some mad numbers tonight. Don't know the level of competition he was playing against, but those are impressive any way you cut it.

Wow! That's great to see.

Game 1: 29 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks
Game 2: 34 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists
*Who knew 2-stars could be that dominant?! ;)

Didn't someone say he would be a "Miles Tarver" type player? Can't see Miles putting up those numbers.
