JohnnyGopher: Mbakwe is gone

You can not play in the NBA with his offensive game. He should know that. EVERYONE in the NBA outside of Shaq can knock down a 15 ft jump shot with ease. He can't. Everyone has at least the fundamentals of working on the low block down. He doesn't.

He can rebound and defend ok. He's slightly undersized to play PF. At best case he's Reggie Evans. I'm sorry. Being Reggie Evans doesn't get you drafted.

I support him entering his name and I do think he has the ability to be an NBA player, but his offensive skill set is miles away from where it needs to be. He should take his last year and work his ass of on that. He could be a first rounder if he develops. If you're not going to be a first rounder, then what's the point? Its tough sledding from there.

How does he deserve one?

If you think otherwise that's fine, I don't really care, but when a guy as talented as him plays with as much passion as he does I think he deserves a more succesful season IMO. He did everything he could for the team, but unfortunately due to injuries we didn't have enough pieces for us to advance to the NCAA Tourny. If there hadn't been injuries we would likely be debating what seed we are going to get right now instead talking about how bad the season was. For how much he has helped the team it would be nice if he got rewarded with an NCAA tourny run.

terrible opinion, the guy gave everything every single game and was the only player on the team who consistently gave his all and played his heart out. Go back to KFAN rubechat.

What a bunch of BS, you ill-informed puppet. I will be happy to see Trevor go and his off-the-court bad behavior won't be missed. Hoff and Ralph represent the U in a classy way, sorry I don't see Trevor in the same light as you.

I agree.

His "give me the phone white girl" comment demonstrated the real tm.

a first round pick in the mid to late teens through pick number 25 is reason enough to stay. there is no guarantees in the 2nd round or in europe. first round draft picks are millionaires, for life if they have a good agent. he has said all along that he's coming back and so have to coaches, why do people keep bringing this up? if he goes i wish him well but unless he's told that he's a 1st round pick in the 20's he would be a fool. he could continue his education and use that to fall back on as well. i have an 8 year old and it doesn't take a million dollars to raise him so just because he has a kid doesnt' mean he's jumping to the nba.

"...why do people keep bringing this up?

Because it's so much fun kicking a sleeping dog and watch the reactions? :)

He is completely lost on defense,as no jumper or footwork, and has yet to make a clutch play. That said this is basically his first year playing big time hoops. His shot looks like it could improve along with the rest of his game. But my guess is he is gone.He hasn't lasting more than a year at the five or so stops he's made so far. That pattern will hold true.

Looks like you should have continued your education with another English class.

Grammar police strike again!!

Trevor

Its obvious he needs to stay. He needs to work on his low post game. One example- on the right block, he spins right and shoots it with his right hand thats move only Shaq or Wilt could do. I dont know how many times I saw that get blocked.

The low post moves he used didnt always work in the Big 10 if you watch the game close he got his shot blocked more then you think. He tries to spin and muscle it up like Shaq that works at St. Benards and Juco.. doest work to well in the Big 10 and will end up in the 8th row in the NBA

He had a great first year considering he hasnt played extensively for some time. He is big, strong, tenacious and plays with passion that more then his skill right now are his best assets. Right now its not a guarantee he makes an NBA roster this year or any year.

Not sure how many BIGS leave school early go to Europe and then make it back to the NBA? Any examples help me? Europe seems to be a good place for guards and small forwards to go and work on their game to become better scorers see more guys get back to the NBA that way.

Bottom line Europe/overseas will be there tomm or after next year. Good advice stay in school, stay visible and work to become a 1st round NBA pick- get $um guaranteed ca$h like a Lazar Hayward. Istanbul(which will always be there) or an NBA roster???

I've seen a lot of people post this, but I simply disagree.

If he works hard on his mid-range game this off-season and returns next year and proves his can consistently knock down that 15-to-17-foot jump shot (like the one he hit in the 2nd half today vs. Northwestern) then his stock will rise. In addition, if he works hard and proves he can make 75% of his free throws next season, then his stock will rise. If he can do those two things, he could be a 20-pt, 12-rebound type of guy and that could put him in the first round next year, even at his age. His athleticism is still something team's will like, but the skills can continue to develop.

If he goes out now, then he is likely not drafted.

+1

Did he bang your girlfriend, or your mom?

Horrible comparisons. You are comparing Trevor to two NBA stars. He'll be very lucky to crack an NBA roster and he's most likely playing somewhere overseas.

Well, also horrible because you're comparing college stats to NBA stats.

Let's take a look at Rodman's college stats:

Fr: 17.6ppg, 13.3rpg
So: 26.0ppg, 13.1rpg
Jr: 26.8ppg, 15.9rpg
Sr: 24.4ppg, 17.8rpg

Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman come to mind off the top of my head, and Trevor is undoubtedly better than them offensively right now.

You guys seem to forget how one dimensional a lot of NBA players are, and how many phenomenal, well-rounded college players never sniff a NBA roster, much less the court.

He may have more offensive moves, but he is lot smaller than either of them. Hops help, but Wallace and Rodman can jump and are a lot bigger weight wise than TM. If he goes I really wish him well, but he does not have a small forward's game or a power forward's body in the NBA. I would guess he could do well in Europe, but those are not NBA bucks.

^ um? are you kidding, trevor weighs a solid 250 at least. probably more like 260. but hes wayyyy to small weight wise for the NBA

nba height and weight

Rodman was 6'8" 210 lbs upon entering the NBA. He may have gotten to 225lbs by the end of his career. Wallace was listed at 6'9" 240 lbs. The height may have been in shoes. Trevor is listed at 6'8" and I've seen his weight anywhere from 240 to 260. So lets settle on 250. Going by recent gopher history (Jacobsen, Quincey) the players are measured in shoes. So Trevor is probably 6'6" and change.

He could be a poor man's Ben Wallace. He needs at minimum to make a decent 15' foot jump shot to see the floor in anything more than garbage time. There have been plenty of undersized pf in the NBA, but they made up for it with determination, skill, drive, film study, etc. Barkley 6'4" and 3/4 inches. Dantley 6'4". Larry Johnson 6'6", Craig Smith 6'7", M. Rose 6'7", D. Blair 6'7", C. hayes 6'6".

So the question for Trevor with a near 40" verticles isnt physical, it's does he have the determination to practice and trust in a jump shot. I think he can see minutes with his physicalness, hustle, and athleticism. He just needs to work at it.

I think Malik Rose and Chuck Hayes aren't good examples. both guys are primarily defensive specialists and rebounders. I think trevor actually has a little more skill and elevation to his game. I still don't think he'll get drafted but he could play his way into the league like Hayes. With the D League, these type of players end up undrafted since the league has a proving ground now. Being there are only 2 rounds they draft potential or dominance. Trevor won't get much better than what he is now. He's a great rebounder, a decent scorer but probably needs to be a better defender to stick in the NBA. He'll get a chance to prove it in the D league.

Trevor's measurables and statistics are almost the exact same as Ben Wallace' his senior season at Virginia Union, for however much that's worth. I don't know the length or standing reach of either one of those guys, but height-wise and weight-wise they are/were virtually identical. And he might benefit from following the Ben Wallace career path- going undrafted by the NBA, going over to Europe to apprentice and continue to work on his game and hone his skills (Wallace played in Italy), and then coming back and hooking up with the Pistons as a much more established and much more well-rounded player than he'd been coming out of college, with the additional experience and playing time gained in Europe having really served him well.
