"Sources: U of M Athletics Director Joel Maturi's contract will not be renewed. U of M President Kaler expected to make announcement today."

"Sources tell me Joel Maturi will remain at the U of M doing "special projects," but will no longer be athletics director. #maturi"

Go Gophers!!

Standing on the corner of Washington and Oak dressed like a Subway sandwich?

We are going to extend him before firing him so that we can pay him a buy-out clause? This goes against everything our athletics department stands for.

Color me shocked.

I hope they've found a replacement who has successfully run a major university's athletic department in a pro-dominated market.

Tubby aint going anywhere...for those that think we can do better right now...your crazy. We have the worst BB facilities in the big ten, a program that has been languishing in mediocrity since the scandal and no AD. Tubby gets extended 3 years by the new AD day 1, and hopefully a commitment to get our facilities competitive with comparable schools.

" Tubby gets extended 3 years by the new AD day 1".... I wouldn't bet the house on that Philly.

Completely agree.

It's logical though. There is no reason the Gophers should try to hire a coach with inadequate facilities, we would end up overpaying. Extend Tubby so that he can keep coaching while the facility is being built and once his contract is up if the team is doing well keep him, if not don't resign him.

Polite Minnesotans that don't feel the need to kick him while he is on the way out?

I thought he did a good job overall but only "good" in the big revenue sports gets you right where we are. Being great in the revenue sports gets more recognition, which leads to more money, which leads to better facilities etc

We can all recall the 'who do they think they are?' reaction from the national media when we fired Mason, right? It would be that x 10 if we fire Tubby. An extension for him is the right move at this point, so long as it's not outrageous in length or $$.

The End of Gopher Mediocrity begins if the new Gopher AD is......

Joel Maturi, thank you for the service form the heart of Millions2spare. You are a class act and a nice guy, and without a doubt a very sincere person.

We can now begin to become relevant in Big ten and hopefully on the national Scene for REVENUE producing Athletics if we hire Bob Stein as AD. Bob should be seriously considered for this job..........

Tweet from Trevor:

"Sad to see Coach Maturi leave. We got off to a rough start but he's been a great person and very helpful for me during my time here."

I think it was Royce White, while recalling his fondness of Joel Maturi, according to a tweet from, I think, from Damian Johnson: I'd like to lock that mofo up in the trunk. :)

Absolutely not.

Maturi reportedly said Kaler offered to extend him.. has Kaler confirmed this to be factual? He seems real impressed with no major infractions... aim high.

I don't consider finishing in the bottom half of our conference in basketball and football and going three years without making the hockey tourney to be doing "good" in big revenue sports. I consider it poor and (in the case of basketball and football) below average.
