Joe Schmit: Remember where you heard this: Randy Shannon of Miami

So why didn't you just say that in the first place? It's because you were counting on people believing you without actually using common sense and doing a little research. People don't use gross hyperbole unless they have some motivation for making a tenuous argument appear stronger to someone who doesn't know any better.

No matter how hard you try, I will not apologize for calling you out on this. It is lazy and ineffectual.

Maybe because as a thread on a Gopher Board about Randy Shannon goes it was a pretty minor point and I didn't think about it that much? I assure you I wasn't worried about the strength of my 'tenuous argument'. It's a message board, you need to relax. Yes it was lazy and I didn't research it. I think it would be more disturbuing if I did. But I do know people who grew up there and have been around UM thier whole life. I take thier word for it.

So, anecdotal evidence outweighs cold, hard, unbiased data? This is revelatory! I will be certain to employ this new paradigm forthwith in all my future discussions.

Also, thanks for letting all of us know that you don't put much thought into what you post here. I will accordingly give your posts all the consideration they deserve.

Gee, I think you know that the basic point is true, whether gleaned from someone who would know, or backed up by hard evidence from the interwebs like you did. I also think that you know that I only meant I didn't put much thought into the specfic choice of words you were harping on.

But I also think that you know what someone means when they accidently use 'sight' in place of 'site' but that doesn't stop you from jumping all over it and making your point each and every time does it? So go ahead and twist what I said to prove your point some more.

I meant a school that is past its glory years and can't recapture them,

Hmm. That could be a problem. Then again, I guess we're well past the point of 'recapture' aren't we?

Actually, the correct word was "cite". But since citing factual data is a foreign concept to you, I'm not surprised you didn't know the correct word.

I wasn't referring to citing data, I was referring to your very witty post about Mike Max's eyesight, but I dont' recall which version of the word the original poster so blatantly got wrong. If that was it, I stand corrected.

I knew perfectly well what you were referring to. I am intuitive and I also have a great memory.

The word was cite.

wow..this whole thread has turned into a pissing match over a minute detail that was used like 2 pages ago. Consider this thread officially hijacked!

Foh-git abaht it, Mah-rio.

Is this an oral defense of a doctoral dissertation or a college football message board?

Shannon might be a good choice

He has experience leading a college program in a pro sports town. He might not insist on being the top dog in town like most big time program coaches will.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. I'm surprised Schmit didn't say "a little birdie told him" this news, a la Shooter.

Randy Shannon was born in Miami, grew up in Miami, played for Miami, coached as an assistant in Miami, left for a job in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and then came back to run the defense at Miami. He moved on from that job when he got the promotion to be head coach in Miami.

See the trend? If the Gophers couldn't keep Seantrel Henderson from going to Miami, what makes anyone think we're going to get the damn coach of the program to come here? Believe it or not, Miami is miles ahead of the Gophers right now. For one, they could probably beat either North Dakota State University or the University of South Dakota.

This goes in the "Franken-coach" rumors -- maybe Shannon could get Dungy to be his defensive coordinator.

No thanks. We don't need an underachiever here. The best part would be getting Henderson.

emann: way better chance the "U" has zero interest in Shannon compared to the flip-side.... read my reasoning in my other post about this topic.

Sorry, I read his one and didn't see the other post. Went back and checked it. Either way, whether it's the U of M or Shannon, it's a snowball's chance that he will be leading the Gophers during spring practice.

I still believe that it would be more of a step down for him than it would the Gophers. Considering the last guy that was here had never even been a coordinator at a major program and the guy before him was a head coach at Kansas, getting the head coach of Miami would still be a pretty big get.

(Although being he is so entrenched in Miami, I wonder/would worry how he would adapt to a completely different recruiting landscape.)

I'll remember where I read it alright. No chance in hell.

Shannon's obviously just floating his own name out there to leverage a contract extension from Miami. This is how college football works these days.

That's not exactly a Nick Saban turnaround. (But we won't get Nick Saban.) But it's also better than you're making it sound. It's yearly improvement after taking over for the Jim Wacker-like Larry Coker. He's not at the top of my list, but we could do worse -- and often have.[/QUOTE]

****************

For the record, Larry Coker had a record of 60-15 as head coach of Miami.

I can assure you that Tim Brewster would not have gone 60-15 at Miami if he had inherited the same players as Coker did.

He is 62 or 63 years old now, so his window has closed, though.

I don't know if he is looking for an extension or rather his next job. I know Mike Leach is spending his day in the Keys and wouldn't mind Miami. Why do people think we get Henderson?

Re: snowball's chance -- thinkin' you're right... and he is far from the perfect candidate... but when a solid source gives you the name of a current BCS-coach, it was hard not to report the nugget.

Question for you Doogie, not a rip. I knnow nothing about the media business other than the old saying that if you don't have two seperate sources you don't have anything, but...

How does someone determine if a source is good or not? Is there a tally kept by reporters? Will this source be viewed with skepticism going forward when/if this turns out to be totally false?

Schmitty must feel pretty confident to brag about it in 'remember this' fashion.

Or he thinks that people won't remember it if he is wrong, but if he is right, he will be tooting his own horn. We're getting things second and third hand at best. I look at these sort of stories as interesting, but I don't trust them any more than any other rumor. The validity of the source that told us is only as valid as the source that told him, and so on. We don't know who all the sources along the chain are.

Jim Wacker-like Larry Coker? When did Jim Wacker win a National Championship? That's some serious hyperbole there. I'm surprised you escaped Dpdoll's wrath on that one. ;)

Wacker-like ... your'e right. That was over the top. You're also right about dpodoll. :)

With likely looming NCAA sanctions for Miami, I'm not surprised to hear that Shannon may/might want out. As I said in the other thread, ala Carroll. Next...
