Joe Schmit: Remember where you heard this: Randy Shannon of Miami

His name flashed through my mind last week for some reason, but I dismissed it as insanity.

Glad to see I'm not the only insane one. But color me somewhat less-than-impressed w/ Shannon. The guy has barely above a .500 record at Miami. I dunno what that translates into here ...

I would not be against Shannon, this was one of the best SI articles I've ever read:
Hiding in Plain Sight
He is from Miami and knows Miami so I am not sure if he would come or not, but I know it would be a pay raise.

Should we only remember where we heard it if this coach gets hired here? It's like saying "Mark my words", people say that and then get upset when you do mark their words when it doesn't happen.

I am intrigued with Shannon. Miami hasn't been great under his watch, but they appear to be improving along with their recruiting rankings. He took over a real mess (from a Miami standpoint) when Croker (sp) was let go. It also appears that he is improving Miami without the off field issues they are known for.

They have been steadily improving under him and if not for QB issues would probably be a top 10 team right now. I was at thier game on Saturday and it didn't look like Carolina could stay with them. Miami kept them in the game with miscues early.

Bottom-line, while I don't love Shannon, he'd be a big upgrade here and I'd take him over about 90% of the names being tossed around. As for why he'd leave Miami for MN, it's a bit odd, but they don't have endless $$ and the expecatations may now outweigh what is possible. Florida has probably permenently passed them as the premier program in the state and worse FSU may have just re-passed them as well. He may view it as a chance to get a raise and get out of no-win situation.

Any Coach in the country who is actually interested in the job or, more importantly, wants to have his own contract extended or upgraded (Garry P., Chris P., G. Mason etc.) will have his name mentioned by somebody. We poor saps will never know whether is was legit or not and nobody will ever call out their scources for getting it wrong in the first place.

I can't believe it is 8 posts into this thread and nobody has mentioned the possibility of a S. Henderson transfer yet.

I agree, I think only two of the Florida schools can be elite (top 10-15 ish at a time). I expect this year to be a blip for Florida and think FSU is on the rise again. I would question if Miami has the financial resources to battle back to the top of the heap. What does Miami really have going for it aside from its location and TREMENDOUS (you thought that word was gone) pride in the program from current players. They have a bit of the old Atlanta Braves syndrome amongst their fan base, it is either National championship or bust. If it's bust their fans tune out (from an attendance standpoint) is a very quick fashion.

This just doesn't make any sense

Okay... I just noticed there is TWO threads for this same topic and the other one had it in 7 posts. It is like the old show 'name that tune' and the other thread wins by naming the tune in 7 notes...

Randy Shannon comes to the U of M and brings a player with him. It's none other than old #77, Seantrel Henderson. Some things can never die.

They really have a screwed up stadium situation as well, students have to make a 45 minute commute to get to Dolphin Stadium.

Is he on the hot seat in Miami?

I haven't heard anything on that front.

I also think we will have our guy by the team we can actually talk to him seriously.

This just doesn't make any sense

It doesn't and it does. From 30,000 thousand feet it doesn't, no sane coach would leave the "U" for the U, but what if the Miami is becoming another ND? A school whose time has passed it by, due to limited resources, decaying facilities, relatively small alumni base (different from ND), and relatively weak conference (both quality of play and financial health).

You're right about the fan base. It's also small. Miami is a small school and almost none of the alumni are from Florida. Therefore when they graduate, they leave. The basketball program is beyond a joke (they can't fill a 7,000 seat arena.) They also rarely fill 'Sun Life' Stadium, it's usually 2/3 full at best. While they have some big $$ donors, they're not swimming in revenue. The ACC TV revenue is also small compared to the Big 10.

The one huge advtantage Miami has over MN is recruiting. There's no disputing it. But if he feels he can get enough of those same recruits to MN while making more $$ and having less pressure, it might be the right combo.

Would Donna Shalala fight hard to keep him from Wisconsin's chief rival?

Yes. Many people were very upset about the move from the Orange Bowl. Donna Shalala is not the most popular person on campus now. They make more money, even with smaller crowds at Sun Life, but it still sucks for the students and fans.

They didn't screw up the stadium situation, it is falling down and they can't afford to repair it or build another one. And even at their old stadium attendance was poor (from a non student) standpoint when they were not in the national title picture (limited alumni in area).

Does schmit have any track record on this stuff? I believe the Sumlin thing because he was one of GL's 4 names from earlier, and I believe GL is more connected.

Of course the Orange Bowl needed to be replaced, what I was saying as they could have explored another option like sharing a stadium with FIU closer to campus.

I don't think so. I think she would look Barry Alvarez in the eye and say "you owe me, I don't owe you. Don't forget that!"

Either way it shows the real problems facing this program.

A guy who has been 26-16 (14-14 in the ACC), 0-2 in bowl games, some asst. coaching upheaval, never coached outside of Miami, FL...

I don't see why would get this guy over some of the others.

It was falling down. But there was public money available for a major renovation if the school would pay for some of it, but they turned it down. So instead they used the money to raze it and help pay for the Marlins stadium.

Agree. Not sure where Schmitt is getting the Tubby comparison.

It will be a 'Tubby-type deal' in terms of $$$$. Certainly Shannon does not have Tubby's resume, but he does have name recognition and comes from a nationally known power. The comparison is not that big a stretch.

and almost none of the alumni are from Florida. Therefore when they graduate, they leave.

Can you provide some evidence to substantiate these claims?

I don't believe for one second that:

A) "Almost none" of the Miami alumni base is from Florida

B) A significant percentage of students don't settle in the Miami area after graduation
