There was talk at the State Tournament yesterday that Jirsa was looking to interview at a D3 school. A bit of a staff shakeup change won't hurt.

Based on what I hear, Jirsa is the most respected assistant coach on the staff so I'm not sure how his possible departure would be a positive.

Good Luck to Coach Jirsa. I hope he gets the job if he wants it.

That blows my mind. Maybe it's by default then considering the rest of the staff. Jirsa has been known to pressure players into changing majors so that their class schedules are more flexible for practice time. I have not heard of him doing it here at the U but he's got a bad reputation nationally for it. He supposedly threatened to pull a scholly from a kid while he was at Georgia because the player's Engineering class load interfered with practice too much.

If he goes to D-III every single player on the roster is there to get a degree first - played hoops second. He may have trouble adjusting to that atmosphere.

If that's true, I wonder how common it is nationally and between different sports.

If true, this is a very good point. Either way, I wish him the best of luck.

You obviously never played college basketball. It was about 50-50 where I played and alot of the players were transfers from a higher division. Jocks are jocks. Some wanted the degree, some just wanted to play ball. By the way, a coach from the conference I played in was just named HC at Nebraska.

Sounds identical to Jim Harbaugh's experience while playing football at Michigan in the mid '80's...

He is still resentful toward the University of Michigan for steering him (and most/all other serious student-athletes at Michigan) into a do-nothing, worthless major...

Maybe Saul can be his lead assistant? Hey, I can dream, can't I?

I'm going to say you were a Viking.

Art is right about this. It made pretty significant news when the situation happened at Georgia because the player was not only a potential NBA player, but an outstanding student. Other players have accused him of high pressure tactics when he was coaching at Marshall as well. Probably not a lot different than many other coaches, but unusual that it would become so public. My guess is the potential move is driven by a desire to wind down later in life, limit travel and get out of the rate race of D-1. If an opening happens, I hope he finds a top grade recruiter and an offensive minded guy. Flip knows O but I wonder if he could recruit. Could he "volunteer" adding another body to the coaching staff? He certainly does not need the money now.

Clearly he is being pushed out and looking for a soft landing.

This board pines for assistant coaching change and then doesn't even realize that Tubby is making it happen.

His history with the NBA will do the recruiting for him. All he has to say is he knows what it takes to make it in the NBA and he can help you get there. Those are magic words to many prospects.

But then they'd have to give him credit for shaking things up.

He's not being pushed out. A D-III or some other lesser job would free up time for him to deal with a personal situation.

If you are going to imply that there is a personal situation but not say what it is then I will be forced to assume that his drug and human smuggling operation in which he brings in marijuana and prescription drugs along with high-paying customers across Lake Superior from Canada using fishing boats is taking some serious heat and he wants to go up there to take care of the situation himself which is why he wants to go to Northland College.

It would have been a lot easier if Doogie would have said that. My point was that his post would have fueled a lot of speculation.

This angle is sooooo overplayed. I'm pretty sure most major college coaches know what it takes to play in the NBA. Plus, most of these ego driven players only listen to their handlers who are just looking to get a piece of the action.

I doubt many of the players Tubby has recruited have "handlers." I'm not saying Flip's history with the NBA alone would get commitments from top players, but if you don't think it would help with recruiting you're wrong.

When I first heard Flip's name tossed out as some type of asst. for Tubby, my thought was "Wow, a chance to have all that knowledge at your side!" Now a month or so later, I can't see Tubby allowing it to happen. Why in the world would anyone want someone right over their shoulder who is mentioned every once and awhile as a possible successor? Just can't see it happening.

I'm sure you're right, but let's look at it another way. We have a lot of talent on campus and maybe even a PG, go to scorer, with NBA potential. The local talent in the next few years is the best ever. Three solid runs in the dance could cement Tubby's place in the HOF. I know I'm dreaming, but this may be our chance to become the program we've always wanted.

Go Gophers!

Sorry about that.

Debated whether to post or not.

But felt like clearing up the misconception outweighed leaving you hanging.

The angle with Flip is that he is a former NBA coach who has also played here and who sent his son to play here. Clearly he's a guy who believes in the product he would be selling. Players and parents would buy into that along with Flip's background.

Ray- if it were Saul's name that was out there as moving on to a small time head coaching deal- I'd be thinking right now that a deal had been struck with Flip. Right now I'm doubting it with this situation, even though I'm one of those who tossed it out there. Still hoping.

In the MIAC it is about 98-2. Nobody (nobody I can think of, anyway) is there because they "just want to play ball." Not many transfers from higher divisions either. And that is from a conference that has had two teams in the National Championship game over the past 10 years.
