Here are the press conference notes - sorry, I know I missed quite a few things today, he was a little more stream of consciousness than usual. Will post the transcript when the U sends it out, but here are my notes in the meantime.
• We're looking forward to the opportunity to get better. When we got back, we had a lot of kids stick around and watch film. We have a lot of kids eager to get better.
• We wouldn't pull a redshirt off a youngster if we weren't going to play him. A lot of it has to do with Gray's situation, he won't practice today.
• I don't think we changed anything in the playbook for Phillip - if we're making changes, it's not about the QB, it's about the O-Line and dealing with so many injuries. I think we need to stay with what our offensive line can execute.
• We missed a blitz pick-up and Phillip got hit pretty good. That was something you don't want. What really hurt us against Northwester was the negative yards. With such a young group of people, we're not as strong as we want to be right now. Max and Phillip are young qb's and Gray is too because he hasn't played that position.
• Max was capable of playing. Gray was not progressing as quickly as we'd like. We did the right thing and we've moved on.
• When you can talk to your kids on Sunday, and they've already watched the film, and they can talk about critical mistakes. I compare it to what U of Miami is going through, they're young, make critical mistakes, etc. Montee Ball - no matter what anyone wants to say about Wisconsin, he is the real deal. He knocked 3 people back, and we didn't tackle him.
• Ed Olson will not be back this week, which is critical for us. Tuffs will be back. Wells will be questionable. Roland Johnson is improving a bit. Tommy Olson has been able to roll up on his toes for the 1st time, he could have played Sat., but it's one of those 100% things. He's better, which is important.
• On keeping a good attitude with all these injuries- as a coaching staff, when we came in, we set a standard. This 2nd year, this is how it goes when you turn around a program, you need to communicate with your kids all the time. Jeff Jones is a young man that played for me at Southern IL - people would tell him he was never going to win, he's heard it all, having him in my corner and by my side, he's lived it, he can help tell the story, he's been through it. When things don't go perfect, we're 4-3 and we have a huge game against Purdue. We have some seniors that have been tremendous through this process, I'm proud of the way they've handled themselves.
• Young people are pretty relentless, and they just want to do well. They are doing extra work, watching video, they care.
• Our goal is to get them to a bowl game, that's what we need to do
• We want to run the ball, my background in coaching is running the ball. Physically, we're still struggling. Doesn't mean we can't - but we need to get better, and get healthy.
• The beauty of this - is I don't feel bad if Phillip runs a few runs, and looks fatigued, we can put Max in.
• Jordan Lynch Rule - who we had at Northern, how much we played him (as a freshman). A lot of people question playing Phillip so young. We wouldn't have done if we had 3 games left. This gets him the opportunity to get some time. I think Phillip gives us an opportunity - he made some plays, and got us out of some situations on Saturday. Him having the opportunity to play will give us the chance to be a better team next year.
• Phillip has the quickest release out of all of our quarterbacks. He can get the ball out in a hurry. He got it out so fast, we didn't have a receiver turned on him on Saturday. He can throw it without the laces, that's not what we taught him, that's what he learned from his coaches in high school.
• On the offensive side of the ball, we've got a lot of Minnesota kids, which I think is a good thing.
• Most really good players are not afraid of competition. What's lacking in our program is good enough players, that aren't afraid of competition to make us better.
• We have to build a program, and build players. In the NFL, you can turn things around quick because you get free agents.
• Issac Fruechte will play. Both he and Tufts had concussions, and one was released to play, but then Fruechte got the flu on Friday night, so it was a rough week for him.
• We're redshirting over 20 players, and playing about 8 or 9 freshmen.
• Staying healthy equals success. You feel bad for the kids. 12 months out of the year, they're working their tails off for 12 opportunities. I feel terrible for Gray because he's worked his tail off. When kids get hurt, you just really feel bad for the kids.
• Purdue is very athletic and skillful. They were young when we played them at Northern IL, and they've gotten better. We're both in similar situations, we both need a win. 90% of what you do in life is mental, mentally, the team will prepare through the week. It will be critical who starts off strong.
• Onside kicks - we executed well on Saturday, the ball just squirted out. Borland came in and hit Phillip, and went down, he hit him low. Kind of like with an onside kick, you can't get it high anymore. Bottom line, everything you do rule wise is for the safety of the players.
