Jeff Horton Presser - He says it's tough to be a Football Coach in Minnesota!

It sounds like Horton really is enjoying himself right now. I would not be surprised if the Gophs came out firing because you can tell it is a care free "what do we have to lose" attitude. I love it. Perfect mentality for big time plays.

I agree - unlike with Brew - I actually think we have a chance. I'm not saying we're going to win, but I don't think we'll have to endure another 55-0 game. I really enjoy Jeff Horton, he's got a great sense of humor, a lot of experience, and just seems like a decent guy.

I like the mood of the coach!

A rested and energized gopher squad stands a chance at winning the emotional battle early.
Keep the gameplan simple, add in plenty of Gray at QB(see what Pryor did to them last game), whip them up into a frenzy and let them go!
A cold and demoralized hawkeye squad early could ratchet up the pressure on Stanzi to take some risky shots, Capitalize on those INT's and we're all in for a great afternoon.
Love it.

I like Horton...Brewster was a little too serious & depressing for me sometimes...

Thanks GopherLady.

I thought Horton was a good guy from the get-go when I first met him. He's the calm, steady, optimistic personality these boys needed to get through this mess. We owe him a huge thank you for the extra zip I think we'll see in the boys' steps this Saturday.

BTW, get yourselves and everyone you know out to the Victory Walk 2 hours before the game to send the team and the 15 seniors off in style!

GO GOPHERS!!

I've been very impressed with Horton's demeanor since he's assumed the interim HC role. He seems a very likable person who's behind his players and coaches 100%, and I'd love to see the whole lot of them use those positive vibes to put a capper on this crazy season by beating Iowa this weekend. That's not too much to ask, is it? ;)

Anyway, kudos to Horton and the fellas for hanging in there and continuing to play hard in a season that was lost almost from the get-go.

If Sumlin, Golden, Hoke, etc. are our top targets, we might as well just keep Horton. He's not much of a step down from these guys and he would be a hell of a lot cheaper. He's a known quantity and he just beat Illinois with one of the worst Gopher teams in the last 30 years. He could help sell early-season basketball and hockey tickets. And with the salary savings, we could afford a half-full stadium. Since there is pretty much no escape from Indiana status at this point anyway, why not go with the better value for our money?

I like Jeff Horton but there is a pretty big difference between what he and Sumlin/Hoke have accomplished. Horton essentially drove the UNLV program into the ground.

So did everyone else who ever coached there... UNLV has basically been a community college for most of its history. You know you've got budget problems when your parking lots are paved with dirt.

This is a tough job but not the total turd it is made out to be

I agree with coach Horton that the Minnesota gig is not an easy job but it is not a total turd either, you can win at Minnesota.
We have great facilities, locker room is second to none and a fan base that is hungry to support a winner.
I personally am pulling for Dan Mullen to be Gopher coach. Mullen is my 1 and 1a and a northern guy stuck in the south. Mississippi is a weird place and not necessarily somewhere you would want to live a long time unless your on the water or coast. I like the Meyer coaching tree, he seem's to get a lot out of his guy's on the sidelines and coaches them up. They have good fundamentals on D and play there gaps and are in the right place, we need a "smart guy" after the last fiasco and all of the limbo. Mississippi State will never be the show in that state like Ole Miss, but so far he hasn't necessarily answered his dance card, or inferred that he has interest. Others say otherwise. I don't think he want's his players or coaches catching any whiff that he is showing any interest to leave. People are talking about this guy so there is at least some hope. The fact that Joe S has mentioned him now, is a good sign that maybe we will get lucky and that the tea leaves are lining up for us.
Now, I know I'm the guy that said it is Troy Calhoun's job based on what one "guy" connected to an assitant AD and a program assistant coach mentioned, there is one guy that seem's ultra convinced. How can that be, dude isn't on the search committee and neither are the lemmings that talk to people like me. I'm friends with an agent of 2 former Gophers players, and they have said the name Calhoun like he is the guy, you keep hearing the name from enough people, you start to believe he is the top finalist. Just because people are saying the name, truthfully I have no way of really knowing that it's his job. I don't think he has it because at least two people have said that Troy C has not granted an interview, I'm more or less in this camp after talking with both tonight that the U has interest but that Troy C, does not. The convinced guy is the one person saying that he initially said no to the search firm, but that the agent called back and said he was willing to talk and money was talked about, and the dollars on table are "GOOD." This is third hand information, you can pretty much see for yourselves it is stuff people are floating and hoping it sticks so there is BS to sort through and everyone, get's excited to hurry up and share, like I did. Personally I don't think Calhoun will leave AFA for the U, I know an NFL coaches agent named "Rick" that has said this much, his best friend say's the same thing, Calhoun will ultimately say no.
I can tell you Hoke want's this job because two people that currently work at SDSU one a fraternity brother are saying he want's this Gopher job, hard sell. Do they really know???? I like the fact that he is said to be someone that really want's the job, is actively pursuing it, and does not look at us as a step over place being a Big10 team. At least someone is passionate about it. Does this mean he will be the guy? My gutt is he get's passed over for someone more established and is not necessarily a good interviewee. ZJ at GI and others over there think he could be the "guy". Golden seems to be the most "unkown" and leaked info guy, he does not sound like he is being talked about as much, as in play as the other 2. The "three" finalist names that have leaked, and people are talking, are a good indication in the end that it will end up being someone else, just my opinion. False smoke signals, and such help keep people off the real scent when the nitty gritty get's going and the real people in play start sorting themselves out.
I think the sitting head coach stuff will stick.
