Jamel Harbison did not make trip to Indiana, won't play vs Penn State

Say what you want about AJ Barker, but how much does this team miss him now after the McDonald and now Harbison news, at least when Barker played on game day he gave it his all.

Maybe since Coach Kill has now pretty much admitted he didn't do all he could to manage his health he will empathize with Barker who basically did the same thing, minus the ranting email and that followed. Miss ya AJ, not afraid to say it after this.

Stirring the AJ pot.

Yeah, another waste if he doesn't get it together. Weren't the calling him the best wr on the team (including barker's mother's best friend) last year before he got hurt in the first game?

Only a freshman, still time to get his head on straight - see Michael Carter, Big Shede, Cobb (never had problems but didn't blossom until his Junior season)

Are you serious? GTFOHWTBS.

Mostly joking, that's why I put stirring the pot but you can't deny the team does miss AJ a ton and the team would be better if that incident never happened.

It gets back to the OLD COACH'S philosophy...I'll lose without you before I will try win with you.

Get your $hit together, kids.

2 players at a position of need who came in with pretty good credentials have all but flamed out in two years. This is bad news for the Gophers not because they have contributed much of anything but it means they must be replaced before they have actually made an impact. This Gopher team has yet to get a verbal at the WR position and they are losing two key seniors from this years team plus they have lost McDonald and Harbison doesnt seem capable of getting on the field at this time. KJ Maye has made little to no impact either. If there is good news at WR its that Wolitarsky and Jones seem to be laying claim to the future starting positions but we will need more than just them.

I'll take D. Jones. Not worried at all.

Let's not forget Eric Carter who, from what the coaches said early in practice, that he was looking good and close to not redshirting. I don't believe be played at all this year anyways. But wouldn't be against adding a JUCO WR to next years class regardless.

Why are people talking like his career with the Gophers is over?

Carter looked good from what I saw in fall practice. Smaller, possession type of receiver, but not afraid to compete. Definitely in the mix for next year.

I don't get this either. It could be as simple as, he's failing a class and they aren't letting him play until he has made up all the work (I'm not at all speculating that he may have academic difficulties, just giving one example of something that won't necessarily impact him longer term)

The less public the situation, the better the chances Harbison can turn it around. As this team matures, the younger players will have a more solid environment to allow them to flourish. Not everyone makes it. Some careers are extinguished quietly. Occasionally one explodes dramatically.

Maybe it's not even failing classes - maybe this staff has a higher standard than simply passing. Maybe the kid just needs some time to get this school thing in order. When I was a Freshman, going from breezing through all my high school classes with A's to taking 16 credits at the U was a big transition for me first Semester and I didn't have another big commitment like playing football on top of it.

Relax. Maybe it's more than that, but none of us have any idea what's going on. Let's not be so hasty to trash a kid that none of us know personally.

The worst part is that the few plays he was in that I noticed he was WIDE open and neither QB even glanced toward him. I don't know what the deal is, but a few times there was not a defender within 5-10 yards and he was not even considered. After at least one of the plays he looked obviously dejected, as if he was saying "why do I even bother?"...

Receivers in our system have to run block. That can be difficult for smaller guys like Carter, so a red shirt season is often for the best. Also, not Carter specifically, but many receivers just don't like blocking. That's why guys like Fruechte are valuable because they'll get after it, even if they're not amazing deep threats.

This is why playing quarterback is so hard. Reading defenses and finding the open receiver in 3 seconds is a lot easier from my couch than it is with 300-pound guys coming at you. You see NFL QBs every week throwing to double coverage when another guy is WIDE OPEN. When the Gopher offense is clicking, they've schemed the defense to exploit something. If a receiver is open on a play, he needs to let the coaches or his QB know when they're on the sideline so they can use it later.

I find it interesting that Harbison played in his first ever game as a Gopher and gets hurt. He does the rehad and I assume the school work to get back. Now he has been in the dog house nearly all season.

Indiana was not the first game he was a healthy scratch.

Pot and AJ Barker two things that go hand and hand.

You stirred the pot, AJ and Mcdonald liked to smoke the hooka pipe. We all like to sit on the pot from time to time.
The AJ and Mcdonald lesson of the day.
Stay away from the green stuff kids, even if you like to smoke, it just get's you in trouble in the long run.

Great post, Nancy Reagan. We should all stick to alcohol, where there's much less downside.

No question we could use AJ, but he burned his bridges.

Sorry to hijack but what ever happened to AJ?
