He’s a blink of the eye to retirement. As long as he doesn’t pull a Woody Hayes or Bobby Knight, he doesn’t need to take anything seriously. And he won’t.

I presume that anyone--Izzo included--would not want this to be the last, lingering memory people have of him and his program.

I will argue that it won’t be a lingering memory for most unless Izzo directly inserts himself and justifies the behavior, or Fears permanently maims another player or the behavior demonstrates itself on the national stage of the tournament when the audience goes far beyond the uber interested crowd like us. Fans know this. The general public doesn’t. The memory span for the general public is really short.

At the same time, even though Draymond Green wasn't thuggish as a Spartan, his later behavior is associated by many fans with Michigan State. I don't know if that stain ever comes out. This Fears matter only reinforces it.
 


Agree there needs to be a consequence that gets his attention. Also want to say that the B1G has long been the most physical conference in CBB. At times, I think that has hurt B1G teams at times as they move through the Tournament.
 

I disagree with this thread. I don't remember Izzo ever having dirty players, at least bad enough to make headlines. His teams play hard and physical. It's been that way for as long as he's roamed the sidelines, and he's won a lot of games with that coaching style. For those of you mentioning Draymond Green, he was not a dirty player at MSU. Obviously that changed in the NBA. Same can be said about Dillon Brooks. He didn't make any headlines as a dirty player at Oregon that I can remember, but seems to relish being the villain in the NBA. I know Izzo gets ripped on GH for his postgame press conferences where he mentions the losing coach, but I actually commend him this time for calling out Fears' on-court antics. You can tell he's embarrassed, as he should be. Now's the time to send a very clear message to the player (and don't be like Nate Oats).

Agree that this is not an Izzo thing. He has a really talented player in Feers who is extremely immature and prone to making bonehead/dirty plays.

You could tell in Izzo's post game that he is pissed and will be even more pissed after he sees the film. The fact that he was willing to call Feers out in his press conference tells me this is something they are going to address.

what Izzo does so well is when he thinks he might be losing a game, he cuts his players loose to get as physical and disruptive as they can. It often works as the opposing teams can’t handle the chaos of a suddenly different game. But I don’t think he encourages dirty play. Although Michigan fans that are friends of mine have thinks he does.

Agree.. Fears brother was talking shit and being chippy last night against the Wolves…

Draymond behaved with Sparty
 

One thing lost in all the talk about Fears' bad behavior is that his actions were due to Langston Reynolds outstanding play. Reynolds held Fears to 10 pts on 36% shooting, after Fears had gone back-to-back for 31 & 29 pts. Reynolds is a savage on defense.

Spot on! I have to give Langston credit for not taking the bait. Langston just overpowers his opponents. He has been a great addition to the Maroon and Gold.
 

Fears at it again, got away with deliberate trip of Illinois player. Underwood challenged but lost. By the Fears was in starting lineup.

I loved how he also kept his cool and just shrugged it off. Reynolds is the man.
 


The reason Izzo rubs people wrong is he comes off like a smug jerk. When he was talking about the Fears incident after the game did you catch the delivery? "I didn't see him hit anybody. If he did he deserved the tech... I guess". You guess? Maybe he should watch the tape of all the other cheap crap Fears did so he can downplay that too.
