It's time for our pro teams to ante up!

I normally just lurk in the corners of the website, but I had to correct this incredibly incorrect statement http://www.forbes.com/best-states-for-business/

Hoeftjm6, here is some advice for you. If you want to convince GopherHole posters that they are ignorant morons you have to hit them over the head with a sledge hammer. Just going with web site page links never gets the job done because posters who think they have all the answers never read them.

I appreciate the advice - if i venture away from the "creepy guy sitting in the corner" status, I wont make the mistake again! ;)

I'm not making this up. Here is my source: http://taxfoundation.org/article/2015-state-business-tax-climate-index

The 10 best states in this year’s Index are:

1. Wyoming
2. South Dakota
3. Nevada
4. Alaska
5. Florida
6. Montana
7. New Hampshire
8. Indiana
9. Utah
10. Texas

The 10 lowest ranked, or worst, states in this year’s Index are:

41. Iowa
42. Connecticut
43. Wisconsin
44. Ohio
45. Rhode Island
46. Vermont
47. Minnesota
48. California
49. New York
50. New Jersey

Threw me off to see Wyoming, South Dakota, Nevada, Florida and Montana among the states with the best "business climate". Certainly unusual. Then clicked on the link. You missed a word in the title. The list was based on taxes only. Probably just an oversight on your part. 2015 State Business Tax Climate Index - "The Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index enables business leaders, government policymakers, and taxpayers to gauge how their states’ tax systems compare."

When in the history of college athletics has a "Pro Sports Team" contributed money towards a capital project in major collegiate athletics? I have no idea when something like this has ever occured.

I think it was latter in the same day that McDonalds donated $10 Million to Burger King.:cool02:

It would be pretty surprising to see organizations that won't fund their own facilities volunteer to fund someone else's.

This is absolutely about DFL/ Dayton tax policy and how it is hurting donations from the big money snowbird crowd to Minnesota non-profits. The article I saw (and Lou Nanne also referenced this problem I the Dan B show) is the Dayton Revenue Department is splitting hairs and aggressively trying to define snowbirds as full time Minnesota residents and soak these people for more taxes, thus further re-distributing wealth.

These people are getting pissed and are not donating as they used to, and this a big problem for the U of M and others. You can stick your head in the sand all you want, but these wealthy retirees will not put up with this type of action, and some of them are probably DFLers.

Not saying your wrong about what's going on with snowbird tax situation but hasn't getting people to donate to the U athletic department been a long standing issue? Your statement above would seem to indicate that the U having fundraising challenges is a new problem. Perhaps I'm wrong but I don't really ever remember the athletic department being flush with cash.

Clearly politics do affect the U's financial bottom line. And politics can also affect the decisions of those who have the ability make the large donations we're talking about.

Florida is in the top 10 states for business climate and Minnesota is in the bottom 10. The more the state takes away from someone with money, the less they have for discretionary things like donations. And if what that business journal says is correct that donations are being used to further penalize, the incentive for donations is even less. It makes sense at least some would want to go somewhere where the tax climate is more favorable. This type of thing is happening outside the US, too. Look at the high profile people leaving Paris due to the heavy handed tax policies there.

Add to that, the state legislature's unwillingness to provide money to the U for these types of projects and it's clear that the state's policies do have an effect on the U's ability to keep up with the competition.

This it not true.

Politics is a black hole of common sense, and were not going to change many minds. Some men just want to count their money and F the rest of society, and hide behind their $1200/month HOA security apparatus in their Naples compound and await apocalypse while desperately checking their security cameras for the thieves trying to steal their hard earned possessions. I work with them every day.

The martyr, woe-is-me mindset is strong in these types. Them against the unwashed masses.

I've long found it interesting how the states (and countries) with the highest incomes, quality of life, education levels have an inverse correlation with the tax foundation findings. It is instructive if nothing else.

A few generations of lazy citizens makes us forget about the importance of things like vaccines, labor unions, humility, etc etc.

You work in Naples?

Let's bring Sarah Palin in here to sort this all out for us.

Maybe the U can secure a loan through loan shark T Denny. As a hard up consumer, we pay the generous premier Bank rate of 36% interest and sundry other fees. He's a philanthropist, what's the worst that can happen?

There's always going to be some level of tit for tat with this character. I'm not sure how I'd feel about taking his money even if it benefits the team we love. We make fun of Phil Knight for slinging horribly made, cheap, plasticky shoes and athletic gear made by exploited southeast Asians, but Its arguable T Denny makes Phil look like a saint.

This string reminds of the Greek's demand for war reparations from the Germans's to take care of their debt problem. It just isn't going to happen and neither will the pro teams be funding the U's project.:banghead:

The Vikings have already given millions for the stadium upgrade. Now everybody else....lol

Most if not all of our beloved pro sports team in MN are benefactors of corporate welfare at the expense of MN taxpayers.

It's time for these pro sports teams that received our generous handouts to reciprocate and donate money to the construction of the Gophers new training facilities as a matter of goodwill.

Norwood and Governor Dayton, are you reading this? Go knock on their doors and shake down a couple mil here and there...

Every little multi-millionaire/billionaire owner chum change can go a long way to reaching the $120 million needed to start construction.

:pig::pig::pig::pig::pig:

Looks like you got your wish. http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/291582431.html The Vikings donated a $5m gift to the University of Minnesota Children's hospital.

5 million to the U for sick kids. 500 million to the Zyg and his brother from the public for a new stadium that will be a cash machine as well as boost the value of the Vikings. Wonder why I dislike the bastards?

Yet how many people will be saying, 'Isn't this great of Zigi to donate this money......and he saved the Vikings'.? Yuk, Yuk.

I've said it before, we need a schmoozer to shake the money out of these folks. Teague is not prime time.
Not sure that's true. When Teague was hired I heard a lot about his reputation of fund raising being one of his better attributes.

Debbie downer, how much money have you given to the sick kids? ;) lol

It is great he is helping kids. The Vikings are my second favorite team behind the Gophers. I am glad they are building a new stadium and the Vikings are not moving. They probably were never going to move but there is nothing wrong with having a first class stadium in a first class metropolitan area. I will have season tickets for both teams. I donated money for the facilities. Having money is not evil. I don't get the hatred for our pro sports teams. I love them all.

The thing I don't understand is people on here say the Gophers are not relevant because of the Vikings being in town, but I've heard Kill many times, including at the Signing Day Social 2 weeks ago, how much of a recruiting advantage it is having the Vikings right down the road. We can't have it both ways.

Ziggy is a multi-millionaire and donated a small amount of his $5 million to the hospital. I would be willing bet the majority of the posters on this board haven't donated $5 to a hospital, myself included. 5 million is 5 million.
