Isaac Asuma is staying HOME!

Hawkins was not a Soumi from the Iron Range. Also, if you listened to Barreiro's interview with Niko, you realize that Niko's dad was a Ranger from Biwabik. That's a good connection in regard to the Asuma family. Both families know what it's like to roll up your sleeves and get to work.
My dad mentioned he was a couple years behind Miro Medved as a Biwabik Brave, nice Iron Range connection!

I played many games at the old Biwabik gym. That was when all the towns had their own high schools. Biwabik had a good team in 1981, but that was a year when Ely and Chisholm were jockeying for #1 in the State and Orr (the other Braves) was at around #10. There is still some very good basketball in hockey country.

My dad and his brothers all graduated from Aurora. My grandfather was one of hundreds of men who brought their own dump trucks to carry the ore out of the pits near Biwabik during WW2. They were very proud of their efforts in support of the war. Nearly every military vehicle, ship, and plane was made from Iron Range ore. They were some of the millions of unsung hero's.

User name checks out. Are you familiar with the two word sentence that I learned from some Finish American friends, "Sauna Den?" Translation, is would you care to take a sauna.

😅 Well, it's good Finnish humor.
Sauna is Finnish, but "Den" is just a Finns attempt to say the English word "then." So, you get "Sauna Den" which is English for "Sauna then?" 😅

Yesssss! We were Class A- Ely, Orr, and Chisholm were always good. Chisholm had legendary coach MacDonald with buzz cut, and I played well against his son who went on to South Dakota St. I believe. Our team stunk, were poorly coached, but we played different sports every season with varying success.

Yeah, Tom Mcdonald and his 6'8" buddy went to play at SDSU. Tom has been teaching and coaching at Ely for probably the last 30+ years. He hasn't matched his dad. But, if there had been a 3 point line, Tom might have been the points record holder for Minnesota. The guy could shoot. Not great on defense, but a pure shooter.

Great keep and mark my words he will look like an NBA player next year. Not kidding.

I was in the last class to graduate from Biwabik. I know all the guys on the 81 team, they were good but as you stated the Arrowhead conference was stacked. The pit you speak of is the Embarrass mine also know as the Syracuse or Lake mine. My Grandpa worked in that mine which is visible from the Quarry Golf course club house at Giants Ridge. Pretty cool Niko has ties to The Range, I would like to bump into his dad as we would know many mutual people even though I’m much younger.

Another nice article and interview in the Mesabi Tribune today with Asuma. Stated he met with Niko a few hours after his press conference. A big factor in Isaac’s return was that Medved had seen him play numerous times in AAU and expressed confidence in him. Also liked the fast style of play and felt it would be a good fit. Going to be working hard in off season and excited that Thorson is back as well.

Thank you for the report, Ally!!

Thanks!

I looked up "true tempo" for MN and CSU last year. CSU was 252nd and we were 349th.

Two things- 1. wow we were slow tempo- brutal. 2. CSU was not fast either but what I like about what Niko does is keep the ball moving- looking for the right shot. So it's not run and gun but it is efficient!

Thanks!

I just looked up FT% and we were 337th (at 66.4%), Colorado State was 26th (at 77.5%).

Also notable was 3PT shooting rate, CSU shot the 68th most on the season (855 attempts at 36.3%) and we were at 295th (649 attempts at 32.2%).

Recruit good shooters and move the ball side to side to get those shooters open shots...Simple but good formula!??

Agreed. My take on CSU's style of offense was deliberate, structured and efficient. I'll take that over an "up tempo" style that is careless, taking quick shots and turning the ball over 15-20 times per game.

I hope to never see another pudgy PG pounding the rock 12' from the basket with his back facing the rim.

Great coaching by Neeko and CBJ, let 'em rip if your guys can make them, keep 'em in the holster if you can't 👍

I agree on one level that if you are bad at shooting threes, you should shoot fewer of them.

However, CBJ also assembled this roster and implemented this offense.

I am looking forward to Niko’s offense and roster construction.
