Is Pitino a Master Recruiter from Day One?

Another thing to consider. Pitino put together a solid recruiting class at FIU in his first year on the job, and that's FIU. Even if we don't land any one of the big three, I have faith that he'll put together a great 2014 class.

Well Tubby still had a shot at all 3... this guys was hired to do a better job so he must get at least 2 of these kids. The fact is that Tubby was selling the University, the advantages of playing at home, the basketball program as well as himself. 3 of the 4 selling points remain so Rich should be expected to get at least 2.... cannot believe the low standards some folks are setting for the this great hire. He is taking the helm of a top 34 RPI team, a top 32 NCAA Tourney team. Why all the negativity about recruiting in state Kids??? plain apologetic nonsense

Disagree. There is no requirement to get any of the top 3. There is a requirement to recruit and coach a team that wins Big Ten games and gets to the tournament. Sure it will be easier to have a big year with those kids, but that doesn't make or break anything. Let's not pretend it does.

Why should we expect to land any of the big three?

Nonsense.

Why should we expect to land any of the big three?
prior coaches all who ended up getting fired were all very successful at recruiting high level in state kids... why should a coach like Pitino be expected to strike out after inheriting a team coming off of one of the most successful seasons in the last 20+ years? that's why!

If you think Tubby was guaranteed to land one, you are delusional. Pitino's success will not be predicated upon landing any of the big three. That said, I do expect him to put together a 2014 recruiting class that ranks in the top 25. Where the kids come from is secondary.

This is correct. One thing that could help him with the Big 3 is to get a really nice verbal from someone outside of the state this summer- early as possible. If he gets someone of note, that may give these three pause-- whoa , this guy is for real. The Big 3 want to go somewhere to win and get national publicity. If they are impressed that it can be done here- they could be had.

why should a coach like Pitino be expected to strike out

Expected to strike out? I'm not so sure about that but it seems a bit unfair to expect him to be successful at this point. It seems to have been very unlikely that Tubby was going to land any of them. Maybe Flip or Smart would have had a chance. Who really knows. But landing any of them is not a litmus test of whether Pitino will be successful here.

Getting Tyus and/or Rashad and/or Reid will be nothing less than a miracle. I expect they'll be verballing within 90 days. If he gets 1 or more of them he's a genius. If not, it doesn't prove he's not.

Yep, people need to recognize that we've got maybe a 15% chance of landing even 1 of those recruits. Just tell yourself that now and don't be disappointed. These kids have the chance to go to Kentucky which will guarantee the safest and quickest placement in the NBA where they will immediately make millions of dollars.

If someone offers me millions of dollars I'm not risking it just to be a hometown hero.

Wow what low expectations, A true Gopher fan knows that We produce NBA players at the U and that the Kids who go NBA one year out of Kentucky would have gone NBA after one year here

Interesting theory. I wonder who he may go after that has this sort of potential.

Great if he can land 1 of Big3, but Minnesota 2014 class will be viewed as deepest class EVER (besides the B3) out of Minnesota when the print dries next year.....

A lot of new names will pop up during the AAU season. While all the focus will be on B3, there is a lot to like if looking deeper.

Maybe, I still think 2009 is the deepest but this 2014 class is very good as well. Not sure it's so clear cut that 14 is so deep? 14 for sure has more high end talent however. Excited to see how it plays out

It might be low expectations, but it's realistic expectations. If you think Tubby was going to land two of those recruits, you need to stop taking whatever drug you are on. I personally felt that the only recruit out of the Big 3 that he could have landed was Travis, and that was if he decided to pursue basketball instead of football.

I do think Tubby was making a lot of progress with these kids, up until their utter collapse in the second half of the season. I believe I even read somewhere that one of the Big 3 had even began to question the coaching strategy of Tubby, which doesn't bode well when pertaining to recruiting. These kids have offers from some of the biggest and best D-1 basketball schools in the nation, and if their goal was to make it to the next level (NBA), watching how the Gophers fell apart would not make them want to come.

Minnesota does not have a proven track record for getting guys to the NBA compared to the likes of Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc...all of whom have given offers to the 3. Name the last 5 players that have came from the UofM and went on to have semi-successful NBA Careers. Humphries...Joel Przybilla...Bobby Jackson...Voshon Leonard...then you basically have to back track all the way to the 80s. If you think we are a breeding ground for NBA players, you are blinded Goldy's smile.

How many NBA players did Tubby produce while at the U?

I'm just going to go ahead and assume that Pitino will pull a rabbit out of his hat and land all three players, plus two more (assuming Ellis doesn't come back) out of state kids to boot. I mean hey, until it doesn't happen, i'm not wrong, and it feels a lot better to be obliviously correct in the meantime.

Confidential sources say that all the parents of the Big Three wanted there sons to play for a coach who would also be a top notch role model and they all viewed Tubby Smith as a Outstanding role model for their young men

Sounds like he has a ton of work to do in the eyes of Pulley. Not exactly what you want to hear.
Pully and the elite players in this state seem to always look down on the U. Almost like your too good to seriously even consider them. Royce White would be the exception. You would think once and a while a kid would want to stay home and help build something great and be a hero. These days it seems like kids really have no hometown. Stars come and go at Kentucky, North Carolina and unless there really special noone remembers them. Take your hometown team to the final four you people never forget it. This AAU scene has just enabled the name schools to get who they want. I'm sure the AAU coaches love the attention.

You crack me up with the "confidential sources" bit !

So they are now going to Lubbock ?

LOL

So that obviously takes Roy Williams, Coach K and Tom Izzo out of the picture. Tubby must have been the only one left! What have we done?!?!

Replying to my post...guess I didn't realize that UNC is not in Tyus top schoos...and they have yet to offer Vaughn. I'll put my own foot in my mouth before The Scout can do it for me.

I'm fine with people responding to THE FOOL!, but can you guys stop quoting his idiotic posts? It tricks me into reading his posts despite the fact he is on my ignore list. Thanks.

Name the last five kids from instate who left who had great NBA careers? Let's see Cole Aldrich,Jon Leaur,Alan Anderson. Let's see Isiah Dahlman,El amin, Jordan Taylor? So if the NBA is your reason for leaving the state it really doesn't matter does it.My take is that for Kentucky and North Carolina that is their selling point. I'm saying if you have NBA talent it doesn't matter.

I agree. It should be a fun summer and fall.

Please go back to high school and learn some reading comprehension skills. Never said or implied that being a top notch role model was exclusive to Tubby...OK

Doogie just tweeted that Pitino is already recruiting hard and that he spoke with Vaughn last night.
