Is "Michigcan winning it all" good or bad for the Gophers?

I think the better question to ask may have been, which is better for the Gophers - Louisville or Michigan winning? I'm torn.

That is the question. I think for MN specifically it's better for Louisville to win it. Coach Pitino winning a second national title can't hurt.

Gotta say that Michigan winning it all makes the B10 look great. Plus, maybe some payers not sure if they will go pro or not may choose to go pro after winning a championship. Makes Michigan a little weaker while we try to improve next season.

That long halftime seems to have sapped Michigan's mojo.

Clark Kellogg is well regarded, but he's still underappreciated. He picks things up and gets them out there instantly.

I think Michigan winning would be great for the B1G, I just don't see it happening against Louisville. They had their scare, I think they win by 12 or more. Then again i didn't think Michigan could get past Syracuse and my highest percentage on my ESPN bracket is 32% so they'll probably end up cutting down the nets.

Congrats to Michigan. I thought the charge call that Morgan drew was the wrong call, and I think charges are called too often in college basketball in general, but Michigan may have still won the game regardless. Monday night should be a great matchup, and will feature two teams getting up and down the court.

Completely agree. Seems like when a charge is called, more often than not the replay reveals it was actually a block. Not a fan of how charges are called.

Players are so quick in this era it seems really rare when a charge is actually a charge. Rarely do I see a player actually get set before contact is made. The players are usually sliding under the offensive player. They really need to look at how they call charges.

Good call on the charge by Syracuse. Also good call on the flop by Syracuse a couple plays before this. Syracuse was being very aggressive (because they had to) and it cost them.

Go Blue!

It's a reason why scoring is down IMO. Players are hesitant to drive into the lane because they don't want to get into foul trouble by racking up charges. It definitely needs to be looked at.

I wanted Michigan to win and I'm glad they did. I thought it was a charge at first, but when they showed the replay in slow motion it looked pretty clear to me that he was still moving when contact was made. That, by definition, is a block.

i also thought it was a bad charge call, felt like he slid into the Cuse player and i thought it should have been a block.

Michigan winning doesn't hurt MN, but Louisville winning doesn't hurt either.

Who made the biggest play of the night by the way? Karl Hess! Way to go Karl. Asshole.

On the flip side, isn't Louisville winning it all good for us? Richard can walk into a recruit's home and say, "Hey, my dad just won a championship and I'm going to do a lot of the same stuff he does."

Not only that, Richard can say he recruited some of that roster. He is generally credited with getting Siva from Seattle and Ware out of NYC to Louisville, among others.

I might also add, that Michigan winning it would also be good from this standpoint...and think about this:

When John Beilein took over in 2007-08, Michigan was generally regarded as on the same general level in the Big Ten as was Minnesota. Michigan has not gone to the NCAA tourney for ten years prior to Beilein's arrival and Minnesota had gone to only one NCAA tourney in the eight years prior to Tubby's arrival (also in 2007-08).

The fact that John Beilein took Michigan from a place that Minnesota was also in and got the Wolverines to the NCAA title game (and possibly the NCAA title) in SIX YEARS should give programs like Minnesota hope. Find the right guy, and things can happen. Beilein got Michigan to the tourney in year two and has not looked back since. That was the impetus for some fundraising and facility upgrades, etc. If Michigan can do that from where they were, with an elite program to contend with in their own state, then Minnesota can do that, too. Maybe Rich Pitino is the guy to make it happen.

I don't know if it's good or bad for the Gophers, but I just won my office pool because they won!!! WOOHOO!!!

I don't care if it's good or bad for Minnesota. If Michigan wins the national title, I win my bracket pool. 90 bucks may not be a lot but a broke college kid will make it last haha

It all depends on whether or not you buy bargain beer or pricey beer, and how much of it you share with your peers.

I can think of nothing I like about Louisville. I want people to know how tough the Big Ten is. It was much better for Minnesota to have Michigan beat Syracuse than if it had gone down the other way. Now, go out there and beg, borrow or steal a win against Louisville, Michigan.

Please: his dad was the closer on any deal that got done any way it got done. You don't think the head coach and the recent record of the school open the door for the lowly, first or second year assistants getting in the door of a recruit's house? If I hear the line: "...my daddy did this...OR... my daddy is...or I I'm here recruiting you to my daddy's program..." I think nepotism...or...I'm REALLY something because I work at Louisville and I got the job because my daddy is coach there...OR my daddy's really good friend and colleague, the head coach at Florida hired me because he goes WAY back with my daddy...." really puts down this young hire at Minnesota.

You think it will be the same for him when he sends his assistant coaches out to try to get in the door of a recruit? Maybe with some local recruits it might help. But, nationally, it will be a while...if EVER that Richard Pitino's name commands the same reaction from recruits as Rick Pitino's name.

IF this young coach starts building a record that matches the record of his father...that will be different. Give him a chance to do just that. Don't curse his luck by dropping his daddy's name all over the place. Make him...let him...give him the chance to go out and earn his own name brand recognition...his own body of work...his own accomplishments. Let him shed the curse of carrying being ONLY his father's son. Let him become himself...his own man...and show his own character as having risen above his father's accomplishments, actions at a totally different university and basketball program.

Quit it with the name dropping and give this young coach a fresh slate...a chance to be himself...to succeed or fail on his own merits. Because, in the end, it will be he, and he alone who goes head to head with the Great coaches of the B1G Conference. Don't steal from his glory if he wins...and NEVER make excuses for him if he loses in B1G play. But give him HIS chance to be HIMSELF and NOT just his father's son.

PLEASE people: he has done nothing at Minnesota yet. We all hope he will do great things. But give HIM his chance to be him and give him a chance to succeed and claim his OWN victories and defeats.

Good luck to our coach!

A Louisville-Michigan title game will suffice, with Michigan winning. Then next year we can hope for:

2 games vs. the defending national champs (if we play Michigan twice)

1 game vs. Louisville (if Lil' Ricky) can get that home-and-home scheduled with Pop

Possibly get Syracuse at some point in the Maui Invitational

Would be cool to get 3 or 4 games vs. the previous year's Final Four.

I hope we play Cuse in Maui. It will be similar to when we played North Carolina in San Juan. They were a big name, ranked but their best players were young and they were still meshing. Cuse should be similar next year. A couple solid guys returning, but they will be relying on some highly regarded freshman as well. A great chance for an early season resume builder. Hey, its never too early to talk about Selection Sunday: 2014 edition!

Yikes. Crabby?

Yikes. Crabby?

Would you argue any of those points? Give the kid a chance to get out from under the shadow of his dad. Sure, it initially buys him a few things, but, it won't help him at SHOW TIME in B1G play. And that is what will make...or break him. He will be out there all on his own...just like Tubby was...just like any, and every other coach is.

A lot of good it's going to do him if fans around here keep saying Rick Pitino, the head coach at Louisville is his dad if he goes 4-14 in B1G conference play and one and done In the conference tourney.

And, when and if he is successful don't steal from him by saying: "...he is Rick Pition's son..." Let the kid be a man and stand on his won...win or lose.

Interesting. I think charges are called too seldom. We let a ball carrier (since dribbling is now optional in basketball, the football term is more appropriate) crash down the lane with impunity causing the game to look like playground ball without officiating. The rare charging call tempers this inappropriate aggression at least a little. Basketball should be a game of finesse and not brutality.

I agree as well. The charge is ruining the game. Players are going for the charge instead of playing D.

I hope things can change. The hard part about it is how subjective a charge call can be.

They used to be called "player control" fouls. Maybe if a guy is making a basketball play toward the basket and a defender gets in the way it can be a no-call. A player would have to forcefully run over a guy in order for it to be a charge.

Its a debate I wish would get brought up. Its definitley one of the reasons why scoring is down

I've beat this to death, but I'm sick and tired of watching the "ball carrier" push off and gain separation with their off hand. That's a foul, and it's never called. Burke got away with it last night, but no one did it more than Evan Turner.

I agree with this. You're not allowed to use your off hand like Jim Brown giving a stiff arm. However, I don't mix this in with the traditional charge that I was talking about.

+1. Pushing off is different than being undercutted when you're driving to the rim.
