Please: his dad was the closer on any deal that got done any way it got done. You don't think the head coach and the recent record of the school open the door for the lowly, first or second year assistants getting in the door of a recruit's house? If I hear the line: "...my daddy did this...OR... my daddy is...or I I'm here recruiting you to my daddy's program..." I think nepotism...or...I'm REALLY something because I work at Louisville and I got the job because my daddy is coach there...OR my daddy's really good friend and colleague, the head coach at Florida hired me because he goes WAY back with my daddy...." really puts down this young hire at Minnesota.
You think it will be the same for him when he sends his assistant coaches out to try to get in the door of a recruit? Maybe with some local recruits it might help. But, nationally, it will be a while...if EVER that Richard Pitino's name commands the same reaction from recruits as Rick Pitino's name.
IF this young coach starts building a record that matches the record of his father...that will be different. Give him a chance to do just that. Don't curse his luck by dropping his daddy's name all over the place. Make him...let him...give him the chance to go out and earn his own name brand recognition...his own body of work...his own accomplishments. Let him shed the curse of carrying being ONLY his father's son. Let him become himself...his own man...and show his own character as having risen above his father's accomplishments, actions at a totally different university and basketball program.
Quit it with the name dropping and give this young coach a fresh slate...a chance to be himself...to succeed or fail on his own merits. Because, in the end, it will be he, and he alone who goes head to head with the Great coaches of the B1G Conference. Don't steal from his glory if he wins...and NEVER make excuses for him if he loses in B1G play. But give him HIS chance to be HIMSELF and NOT just his father's son.
PLEASE people: he has done nothing at Minnesota yet. We all hope he will do great things. But give HIM his chance to be him and give him a chance to succeed and claim his OWN victories and defeats.
Good luck to our coach!
