Notre Dame gets $20 million for reaching the championship and keeps it all to itself because it is not in a conference. Ohio State gets the same, but must divide it among all the 18 teams in the conference. For most elite programs, wouldn't being independent generate more income on average? They'd almost always make the playoff and get to keep all the money they make.

The old four team playoff didn't benefit Notre Dame because they usually wouldn't make the top four so got nothing. The new 12 team playoff benefits them the most because they'll almost always get in and share nothing.

If I were the ACC or any of the teams that play Notre Dame annually, I'd require them to share their winnings or not play them. Notre Dame gets the benefits of playing in their own predictable, annual schedule similar to a conference, but keeps all the spoils of the CFP to themselves. Some people have said teams should stop scheduling Notre Dame until they join a conference (or, in my opinion, share the spoils in some way).

What do you think?

I’m sure top teams have considered the dollars and sense of leaving and might well do that in some cases except for conference contracts. They could probably throw their weight around even more if they wanted to.

Notre dame probably collects more than 20 million less in media revenue than Purdue does

So they better keep making the playoff and winning games

How much would Purdue make if OSU, Michigan, Penn State, USC ditch the conference?

How much would OSU, Michigan, Penn State, and USC make if congress took action on media conglomerate business practices?

They’d make less

Ohio State, Michigan, Penn state and USC could bail on the conference and form a super conference if they wanted.

They could bail and become independent if they wanted

My thing is it’s definitely fair that Notre dame is independent and anyone can make that choice

Notre Dame isn’t the only independent team

1. No one to blame other than themselves (Big Ten) for having to split that money 18 ways. They decided to keep adding schools and decide that the money be distributed evenly.

2. Programs sitting on the couch still get something from all these bowl games.

3. It’s an advantage the years they advance that far but it’s a disadvantage the years they don’t (which will happen significantly more often).

Someone mentioned splitting it with the ACC. Could be an option.

As long as Notre Dame doesn't get a Bye in the CFP, I think it's completely fair.

That offsets the fact that the they aren't subject to a Conference Championship/13th Game.

Is it fair to Notre Dame that the Big 10 Conference has grown to 18 Teams?

As you said, each get school get's to do whatever they want. Totally fair.

I would encourage Penn St to go back to being an Independent. Fine by me.

Look for Notre Dame to announce later this year that they will be joining the B1G.

At about the same time, Florida State will be making a similar announcement that they, too, will be joining the B1G

If Notre Dame played in the Big 10........they would not have made the playoffs.

I know there are good reasons for having Notre Dame join the B1G ($$$$$), but aren't there very good reasons NOT to let them join? Do the B1G powers really wants another power team that they'll lose to in the league? Them joining the B1G will make it even easier for them to recruit against the rest of the teams and make all the rest of us worse. I get that they recruit nationally, but they really recruit heavily in the Midwest which is the backyard for all the other teams.

It seems like Notre Dame is in a position of power, but are they really? Could the B1G decide they don't want them to join, the SEC decide they won't go after them because they & the B1G are playing nice right now NOT going after teams in each others' footprints. That allows the ACC to play hardball and say if you don't share the loot, we don't want you. The Big 12 probably bids for their services vs. the ACC, but if either the ACC or Big 12 get them, it doesn't push them up to the level of the P2.

I just wonder... Teams knew this could happen, but now that it actually has, it might cause some major push back on Notre Dame's current set up. Why would the other 130ish teams play along? As long as the B1G is confident the SEC won't sweep them up, I think they'd be fine with them being forced to join one of the other two conferences. It will weaken Notre Dame, a major threat, more than it helps those conferences. James Franklin already went on the record that they should have to join a conference and he thinks they have an unfair advantage.

Obviously, I have no idea how this turns out, but this could cause some major turmoil. More than any other result I can think of.

Probably depends on schedule but they are currently 4-0 vs big ten playing teams 3, 4, 9th (tie), and 18th

Maybe that's why James Franklin thinks they have an unfair advantage.
I think it’s any easy thing to say but the big ten has 4 playoff teams and Notre dame beat two of them.
Also beat USC and Purdue

I do think the gauntlet of a full conference schedule is different than hodge podge P4 teams. Probably don’t go 9-0 in big ten play. But 10-2 notre dame makes the playoff from the big ten and they’ve already beaten 2 of the top 4

I'm with you. I think they'd do VERY well and don't want Notre Dame in the B1G as long as they don't go to the SEC. They will just make it harder for the Gophers to be successful.

Please no! That would suck. Tough enough already.
