Interesting that I haven’t noticed him even offering many MN kids during his time at Illinois, let alone landing any.

In the case of Johnson....he was evaluated and recruited by a number of power 4 teams (MN included) but only offered by G5 and FCS schools until Nebraska came in really really late and offered him a scholarship. Chances are that was after their primary plans fell through but regardless it worked out great for them and Johnson.

In a perfect world, every quality football player from Minnesota would play for the Gophers but of course that isn't how it works.

Fit for the program matters as much as anything.

Saw an interview with Kelvin Sampson and he said the quickest way to ruin your program/culture is to recruit an “AHole.”

I’m not implying Johnson is, but Fleck’s program isn’t for everyone, not do they want everyone either.

Additionally, they’re young adults and still growing/maturing into their bodies. That gal who wasn’t so good looking in HS, can turn into a knockout by the end of college🤷‍♂️

Tony Rice was considering the Gophers (I don't know if he fully committed) when Holtz was coaching, but he followed Holtz to Notre Dame.

I think the recruit that flipped to Michigan State was a LB named Jones (first name--and in truth perhaps the last name--escape me).

Didn't we also lose Robbinsdale Armstrong WR David Gilreath in that coaching change or was that later?
 


Jacob Clark, albeit in his seventh year, has been the Manning award winner twice this year. I sure would’ve liked to have seen him get a fair shake here.

Clark has finished his career with a couple good years at Missouri State playing against CUSA and lower level talent. And it took him multiple years at Missouri State before he finally started producing at a high level. Did little to nothing in the first 5 years of his 7 year career.

Hurt his shoulder year two down there after sitting behind a 5th year long time starter. Morgan had one absolutely great year followed by mediocrity. Clark is the most talented QB PJ has recruited can scramble out of trouble and zing it all around the field.

147 yards - 1 TD and 2 INT in a 63 point loss against USC this year.

Not saying Clark doesn't have some ability but he is putting up big numbers against FCS and G5 teams.

The eye don’t lie check him out on film. I’ve always thought the kid had “it”. What was our guy’s line at Iowa or TOSU this year? Love our guy and and game does not a season make particularly for MSU in their first game as an FBS program.

Again....not saying Clark doesn't have ability...I'm sure he does.....but level of competition matters. Took him till year 6 to find any success in college and it has come against FCS and G5 teams.
 

Agree with those who say kudos to Nebraska for IDing and developing him and to Johnson for apparently working his tail off to improve. Did MN “miss”? On potential, it would appear they definitely did. But at the time, it’s tough to fault them for taking players they thought were better — and that many other coaches/programs thought were better.

Yup Greg Jones, fantastic college linebacker.
 


The accepted wisdom back then was that Larry Sr made it very clear he didn’t want his son going to the U.
