Is Emmett Johnson biggest local star that was not offered a scholarship? I know I must be forgetting some. Watching him run against Iowa today. I know we lost a few who we offered but went elsewhere but to not have offered him big miss.

Nope, I don't think so, but he is an interesting case nonetheless. He was undersized coming out of Holy Angels with a very slim offer list. I think he's good but I don't think he's better than a healthy (pre-injuries) Darius Taylor or Mo Ibrahim. That being said, he's the type of kid that PJ should be getting.

NDSU has had several kids that the Gophers missed on over the years. A few others that have ended up at nearby schools

As far as Darius Taylor goes as Bud Grant used to say durability trumps ability..

Carson Wentz would probably be a bigger one in terms of easy recent history (and given there is no FBS team in ND, yes I view them as local).
Also insert a bunch of random lineman who have ended up at NDSU
Evan Hull (NW RB now in NFL) also wasn't offered.

Just football or all sports. Gopher hockey didn't offer Ryan McDonaugh, Hoops didn't offer Jordan Taylor, football let Evan Hull get out of the state

Right but how do you determine that in recruiting when there are no previous issues.

No of course you can't forsee future injuries. I said this to respond to his claim that a healthy DT is better than Emmett. That's like saying I could be a great WR if I could caught a pass.i can't catch a pass and DT can't stay healthy.

And the thing about Wentz was ... pretty much everyone missed on him.

Off the top of my head, Trey Lance was a top 5 pick in the draft.

He was a miss in hindsight, but like others said he was missed by many. I believe he didn’t even get an offer until after signing day and winning Mr Football.

There is some validity to saying “everyone missed on him” but if there’s anyone that wouldn’t miss on a local/regional recruit it is the local team. Wentz was at a Fargo high school but Emmett Johnson was at Holy Angels and Evan Hull at Maple Grove I think.

Do you take a chance on these so-called undersize guys as opposed to offering a low 3 guy somewhere else? NDSU has proved that the local guys honored here but yet not offered major scholarships can do well. Yet, how many hits and misses do they have with that theory? May all just be a crap shoot and may hurt more in the long run.

As I recall, Hull never received a formal offer but did meet with Fleck. Fleck supposedly said something to the effect that we'll offer if you sign right now. Hull wanted to wait so no offer was forthcoming.

I coiuld be totally wrong on this, but I think that is how it was reported on this board.

In the 2022 class we had Zach Evans committed as a RB and in recruiting he was much higher regarded then Emmett.

Easy to look back after a player blows up and say it was a mistake not to recruit them but the reality is much more complicated then that.

We could fill our class with players only getting G5 or FCS interest but going to go out on a limb and say that would not be a very effective strategy for competing in the Big Ten.

So do you think our coaches should just recruit by recruiting services rankings? Or by actually scouting players on their own?

Not really sure I should even dignify that question with a response but obviously the evaluations of coaches and scouting on their own is way more important than the recruiting services. Recruiting services are more for the fans as opposed to the coaches who are doing their own evaluations.

In the case of Johnson....he was evaluated and recruited by a number of power 4 teams (MN included) but only offered by G5 and FCS schools until Nebraska came in really really late and offered him a scholarship. Chances are that was after their primary plans fell through but regardless it worked out great for them and Johnson.

In a perfect world, every quality football player from Minnesota would play for the Gophers but of course that isn't how it works.

Does Fleck treat each recruit differently? I've read where he wants his recruits to sit on it, while other times he wants them to commit on the spot.
