Is anybody else losing their "love" for Gopher BB?

Your talking football. I'm talking basketball Bleed. Mussleman won a Big Ten title, as did Dutcher. Clem took us to the Final 4. albeit tainted. Do you want to drag the basketball program down to the football level? You're not comparing apples to apples my good friend

NEWSFLASH - The basketball team is at the level of the football team. The vacated final four was 15 years ago, the Dutcher era was 26 years ago!

Who the heck is saying that you can't criticize the coach?? If you think that, you haven't read too may GH threads today or last night! He's getting RIPPED and rightfully so in most cases.

And who is saying that if you are criticizing the coach you aren't a true fan? Please provide the links. Thanks.

Go Gophers!!

Bleed, I think you need to go back and read some of the posts. I've already been told: "Don't let the door hit you in the ass" and " I really question your love for Gopher basketball " You might have cut her a little green there Bleed.

These people were talking about you losing your love for Gopher Basketball, not ripping on the coach/players. Completely different from what short old ornery curmudgeon said.

Wow Ruppert, you've played the game? I'm so impressed. Pray tell, please tell us about your playing days. I'm sure they were glorious. We're all on pins & needles to hear about when you played the game.

Agree, let's not get to the half century mark like the football program.

Clearly you either don't understand what your first post says, or you don't understand what the responses say. Not much room for this discussion to move forward if you don't see the massive distinction.

Either way, let's get a win on Sunday!

Go Gophers!!

The (un)official rules of Gopher Hole:

You are not allowed to criticize the coach, no matter how poorly the team plays.

If you do criticize the coach, you will be accused of not being a "real" or "true" gopher fan.

When in doubt, blame the Athletics Director.

Seriously - being a fan, even a loyal fan, does not mean you check your intelligence at the door. Being a fan does not mean accepting poor play as the "cost" of being a fan. Being a fan does not mean surrendering your right to express an opinion.

C'mon people - go back and look at some film or videotape of Dutcher's good teams, or Clem's good teams - even the team Monson had that made the NCAA tournament, and compare it to this year's team. This year's team will be found lacking in virtually every category - outside shooting, rebounding, leadership, toughness, and the ability to win a close game.

And as far as comparing the FB situation to the Basketball situation - at least the FB team showed improvement as the year went on. We are fans - and all we ask for is at least a glimmer of hope. Kill and the FB team provided that. Tubby - no glimmer in sight.

Oh well- at least we have the excitement about Tubby's strategy and recruiting! :)

To answer the topic, no. No. And for good measure, no.

Bleed, Do you want to carry 50 years of frustration into basketball? I believe the team has lost 14 conference games in a row. That was my point. You don't think we're heading down that trail?

All I said was that I played the game. Nothing more. I'm sure many on this board played at some level. I played through junior college. Don't be a dick.

I am not happy with being 0-3...but watching the three games it is clear that the loss of Mbakwe is going to hurt alot and you can see it over and over. Everyone can throw there arms up in the air and say Tubby can't coach and can't manage players...you some points. But it is hard to say that losing an all-american off a team that is projected to be a borderline top 25 team isn't going to be a problem in the win loss column. I'm not going to go into all the lost players we have had the last 3 years that really hurt us...I am just going to say we have been unlucky at times and unable to capitalize at other times...combined this is a building disaster and Tubby has to pay cus you can't fire the players.

Build the damn practice facility so we can recruit a top line coach and top line talent.

"Is anybody else losing their "love" for Gopher BB?"

Not until the sun rises in the West.

Love? No. I'll never lose my love for Gopher Football, Basketball, or Hockey. But I'm pretty frustrated right now. The trajectory of the program isn't where I'd hope it would be in Tubby's 5th year.

Interesting thread with some of the folks whose responses I enjoy the most chiming in. Still a die-hard and always will be, but walking out last night was as dejected as I've ever been after a game. The lack of energy by our players was what got to me. When me wife, who knows little about the game, sits there and tells the players to move, that's not a good sign. There were some brutal calls, but how in the hell can you only have drawn one foul well into the second half? And this is at home. I think Iowa was already in the bonus before the second one. I tend to stick with coaches too long, but Tubby might have lost me last night.

Well here is the problem that I laid out - the kids we are now recruiting haven't seen us relevant for pretty much all their lives. Tyus Jones was born on 5/10/96, that means the last time the Gophers won an NCAA Tournament game, he wasn't even a year old.

We're a few years away from a "lost generation" for Gopher basketball success, and we've seen how well that goes over with the demographics of Gopher football.

For many many reasons, this is why this season was so critical to have a breakthrough.

Go Gophers!!

Bleed, this is my biggest concern as well. I grew up with the Gophers and the Barn. Have sat through many good and bad times in the place. It's just that it is getting harder and harder to remember the truly exciting times through the years. There have been moments in the past decade, but nothing like the days that I remember in the Dutcher and Clem eras. The biggest difference of the years since Clem is the way teams come in to the Barn and seem to own us. That never happened, even in those years that we had marginal teams.

I would imagine that the allure of coming up from the locker rooms onto the raised floor in front of a packed house (well before tipoff) is long gone to the great players of today and tomorrow.

I will most likely have season tickets for as long as I'm around, but I'm certainly not going to lie. The magic of coming in to the Barn on a cold winter night is gone. I remain hopeful that it can be recaptured.

Unreal Mulligan. My wife said the same thing !! She also wondered why the Gophers didn't start trapping earlier?

No - I'll be excited as hell when they win their next game. It's just one game - as disappointing as it was.

As soon as we beat Purdue this weekend all will be right with the world. Mark my words.

Also:

FB; Kill's 1st year.
BB; Tubby's 5th year.

ripping blind loyalty for basketball fans and then wasting cash on loser football team does not make cents! I suppose supporting bad teams might impede the motivation to improve, while dropping support might facilitate necessary change. I guess some folks do not put a premium on winning games but just enjoy the home team play

Unfortunately

There isn't one Tubby Smith recruit that I enjoy watching so as a result I don't watch them anymore. I had season tickets for 35 years and after last year let them go and I am glad I did. Tubby does not recruit well. And I absolutely refuse to watch Ralph Sampson. Never in all my years as a Gopher basketball fan since the days of Lou Hudson and Archie Clark have I seen a more disinterested unengaged player.

When the first priority of many college ballplayers is to audition for the NBA and most of a team's players are not from the area they represent, I don't expect them to be ardent about their team. Fans sense this and respond with tepid support.

It's been 14 years since the gophs have been relevant. Why should we care if the administration does not care. The barns a morgue and the coach is as stoic as a mortician and has the players playing like mourners. Maybe former pres of the U, Malcom Moos, was right in wanting the U to become like Chicago University and drop all athletics. At the rate they are going, no one will care if they do. How much longer do we want to support Division II teams at premium prices. Does any season ticket holder really want to spend $45 to see victories over St Marys or St Peters? Was I the only one bored with this preseason? Next year, basically the same team and Tubby's players don't seem to improve by his expert coaching. I leave the program too if I got sat for missing a shot. It's really tough these days being a fan

Isn't that the definition of a bandwagon fan? Only supporting teams when they win ...

I finally hit that point with Ralph at the Illinois game. Good player, the team would be in real trouble without him, good kid, hasn't gotten in trouble or caused any, but between his delusion about thinking he can leave early and get drafted and his passive style of play, I am ready to cheer for a new player on that scholarship.

One thing I have noticed is the underdog, maybe undertalented player (Hosea, Dusty some others I can't think of right now) used to be celebrated and cheered when they contributed anything even if it was two trips up and down the floor without a foul-- and now our underdog, undertalented, underrecruited (Mav, Chip, Elliot, Oto, Andre Ingram) are not nearly as revered.

3,000 empty seats for the Iowa game and "yes", Williams Arena is a shadow of its former self. My buddy said people arrive like they've self inflicted wounds.
I take his words to heart. He has been a season ticket holder for 30 years and bleeds maroon and gold.

Not me.

I love College Bball with all its warts and the Gophs are my team. I’m still a bit down from the Iowa game but I’ll be better today and by Sunday I’ll be there and ready for a W. Tubby is not perfect and quite honestly deserves some criticism for both his X’s and O’s and recruiting, but I’m a Gopher fan with an irrational love of the program so ya’ know what…I’m looking forward to the Purdue game. Wow, quite an a$$ kicking by PSU last night by the way. For all the nostalgia I read here about Clem, by ’96 there was a lot of grumbling about the head coach. We got drilled by 19 at home in the ’96 NIT (NIT!) and I remember being pretty down, there was much gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands by the fan base. I’m sure some fans bailed after that failure. That was about Clems best bunch of recruits and Tulane destroyed us, they had better athletes and I thought if this is all we got, what chance will we ever have? Well ’97 happened and we all know the story. I’m rambling so let’s just say I’m not always happy, but everyone who knows me knows I’m I’ll be in section 2XX seat numbers XX at the start of all home games. Some shake their heads and feel pity, but it’s just the way it is.
