I'm sorry, but last night was the old nail in the pine box. I held season tickets for 22 years, dropping them in 2004 because it was getting tough to get down to the games with the different TV schedules and me flying all over the country. In the Clem era the kids layed their guts on the line every night. Clem had compassion and was so involved in the games( ripping off his coat, or taking a "T" when he thought it was needed) He had a great X & O guy in Al Brown and Williams Arena was "alive" because of Clem. Now, I see an old guy that has dealt with health issues and has lost his compassion and insight for the game. My buddy went to the game last night and he said: "It's fricken Iowa and except for a few " Who hates Iowa" chants from the student section the crowd sat around like they were constipated" Sorry for the rant, but
man that was pathetic last night.

Not losing my love, but not happy with the state of the program.

No way. Never have, never will...not my style.

I've sat through many bad seasons and too few great ones, but the enjoyment I get out of the great ones far surpasses the frustration from the bad ones.

It's a family/friend thing for me too. I grew up going to the games with my Dad, the memories are too incredible. I now have memories with IAM4Goldy and my kids and wouldn't trade it for the world.

I don't expect this unconditional love affair for Gopher sports to be the right fit for everyone, but I know it is for many of us and we'd never consider "losing our love" with Gopher football or basketball.

Always and forever - GO GOPHERS!!

Not at all. I'm disappointed about last nights loss, but it's on to purdue and hoping for a big win!

I will love gopher sports until I die, thanks.

are you sure you posted on the right board? this very same thing could have been said about jerry kill in many games this year. i take it you are not a gopher football fan either? did you go to the nebraska game? did you see our old coach dealing with health issues while losing to a horrible new mexico team? i have a lot of friends in crosslake area and they all have given up on gopher football. hopefully you aren't one.

What Bleed said, I second.

Frustrated as all get-out? Yes.

Willing to kick Gopher hoops to the curb? Nope. That's what you do with teams you're only marginally invested in (for me that's the Vikings & T-Wolves). The teams we truly choose to invest in -- whoever they are -- those are the ones you stick with when all starts appearing hopeless.

I've watched all but one half of the Gopher's this year and can say while I've been completely frustrated, I've been thoroughly entertained and on the edge of my seat. Last night was brutal, I had the same feeling as I did walking away from the New Mexico State football game this year. I may have disconnected myself emotionally from the overall outcome of this season, because it's likely not going to be pretty. But I'll still watch every single minute of action I can get until the end of the season. I'll watch B1G basketball every T-TH S-Su.

Feel much the same way. Metaphor: We fans are the thumb; this team has been the hammer. Swear, stomp our feet and whine a bit...it's natural and will help reduce the pain. Which, in the long run will fade....well, it #@#&* well better!

Last night was about the equivalent of the New Mexico football game. Very disappointing.

Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Bleed nailed it - I feel exactly the same way. Unconditional love: It means you don't walk away when things get tough, even if they are tough most of the time.

Only a Penn State-type situation would have me turn my back. So I guess that's where 'unconditional' becomes 'conditional' for me.

Let's get up off the mat, beat Purdue on Sunday, and then shock IU in their place!

I'm with you Bleed. I'll always be all in. However, there are not enough fans like that anymore. At some point things have to get better or the herd will keep thinning.

Problem is, I'm in my late 20s and I can remember just one really good Gophers basketball season when I was in 7th grade, and apparently that year never even happened. When is the next time this program will challenge for a conference title? It may happen one more time in my entire life. Being from Winona, I latched onto the Winona State basketball team at a young age, and they came through with two titles in three years and 100% small college relevancy for the last 7-8 years. This year, they are great again, and it's exciting. I can only imagine if Minnesota had a great program like the Warriors. The entire state would be energized, not just Southeastern Minnesota.

No, I have not lost my love for the team, but it's becoming harder and harder to watch other college basketball games when you know you don't have a horse in the race anymore.

I have, however, lost my love for Tubby Smith. Regression. Agitation. Frustration. Stagnation.

if last night pushed you over the edge I question how much you really "liked" gopher basketball, let alone loved it

As much as I hate to even look at this board after a bad loss I have to say if you find your identity in five guys playing a game I think you need to rethink your priorities.

This is not life or death stuff folks.

the most disappointing part for me is the lack of energy and excitement at The Barn. the conference season was the thing to look foward to even during the down years. the team would defend their home court with everything they had. that just hasn't happened recently.

Well here is the problem that I laid out - the kids we are now recruiting haven't seen us relevant for pretty much all their lives. Tyus Jones was born on 5/10/96, that means the last time the Gophers won an NCAA Tournament game, he wasn't even a year old.

We're a few years away from a "lost generation" for Gopher basketball success, and we've seen how well that goes over with the demographics of Gopher football.

For many many reasons, this is why this season was so critical to have a breakthrough.

Go Gophers!!

I'll never forget going to gopher games when my mom went back to school at the U and sitting in the student section. It was the coolest and greatest thing I'd ever experienced when I was younger and I'll never forget it. that was when I first loved Gopher basketball and nothing could ever change that. It wasn't success of the team that made me become a fan, and that won't take me away either.

Was Clem in the maternity ward with a scholarship offer? :)

The good news is that there is enough history and institutional allegience so that if and when it comes back around people will return quickly and will stay with the program for a long time through an extended downturn. Maturi's quote about a sleeping giant when he hired Tubby was correct. Unfortunately, Tubby hasn't been able to wake up the giant.

Its funny that IF Welch could have made one free throw in that Illinois game we might be celebrating this season!

I was thinking the same thing...if you look at some of this in a vacuum, it's crazy:

Two games we've lost by a few points and another game we lost in Double OT.

BUT, it's not in a vacuum and instead we sit at 0-3, have lost 13 of 14 in the BT and have shown little ability in the Tubby tenure to rip off a 5-6 game BT win streak that would be so needed right now. But, we get a shot on Sunday to start said streak.

I'll be there cheering like crazy!

I think 22 years of being a season ticket holder and attending games before that time shows how much I cared for Gopher BB. I was going to games as a young kid during the John Kundla era, so don't tell me "how much I really liked Gopher basketball" Jeez, what a dipsh-t response. And for the guy who questioned if I still love Gopher football. Yes I do, and have held 4 season tickets since 1981 and have been to every bowl game except the two Rose Bowls and and one Music Bowl. How old are you From the Barn? If you enjoy the crap that was put on the court last last I venture a guess you were never around during the Mussleman era, or for that fact maybe even Dutcher or Clem's teams. I've played the game and saw some of the best from Ollie Shannon, Lou Hudson, Archie Clark, Ray Williams, etc. The product on the floor last night is what comes out of the backend of a chicken. Period, end of story.

It's really more what you see happening than the results or the scores. Watching this happen in person and feeling the vibe of the fans in the arena gives one a sense of the depth of the problem.

How old are you ruppertflywheel? If you enjoy the crap that was put on the field during the Wacker or Brewster eras or during the New Mexico State game this year, than guess you were never around during the Warmath era, or for that fact maybe even some of Mason's teams. I've played the game and saw some of the best from Bobby Bell, Tyrone Carter, Marion Barber II and III etc. The product on the field during some games this past year and the previous four years is what comes out of the backend of a chicken. Period, end of story.

Even as a college student at NDSU the Gopher basketball team remains my favorite basketball team to watch. It has been a frustrating go for the last few years with this team always being on the bubble come tourney time. Every time that I watch this team play I really want to pull all of my hair out and scream. Sure they are pathetic, but I grew up with Gopher blood, and I will continue to root for them until the day I die.

Your talking football. I'm talking basketball Bleed. Mussleman won a Big Ten title, as did Dutcher. Clem took us to the Final 4. albeit tainted. Do you want to drag the basketball program down to the football level? You're not comparing apples to apples my good friend

The (un)official rules of Gopher Hole:

You are not allowed to criticize the coach, no matter how poorly the team plays.

If you do criticize the coach, you will be accused of not being a "real" or "true" gopher fan.

When in doubt, blame the Athletics Director.

Seriously - being a fan, even a loyal fan, does not mean you check your intelligence at the door. Being a fan does not mean accepting poor play as the "cost" of being a fan. Being a fan does not mean surrendering your right to express an opinion.

C'mon people - go back and look at some film or videotape of Dutcher's good teams, or Clem's good teams - even the team Monson had that made the NCAA tournament, and compare it to this year's team. This year's team will be found lacking in virtually every category - outside shooting, rebounding, leadership, toughness, and the ability to win a close game.

And as far as comparing the FB situation to the Basketball situation - at least the FB team showed improvement as the year went on. We are fans - and all we ask for is at least a glimmer of hope. Kill and the FB team provided that. Tubby - no glimmer in sight.

Who the heck is saying that you can't criticize the coach?? If you think that, you haven't read too may GH threads today or last night! He's getting RIPPED and rightfully so in most cases.

And who is saying that if you are criticizing the coach you aren't a true fan? Please provide the links. Thanks.

Go Gophers!!
