Interesting Perspectives from Texas

No, I don't.
So I assume you are used to seeing assistant coaches with coaching records?

Has anyone on this board ever seen an assistant coach with no HC experience have a coaching record? I rest my case. It's because they don't exist! Assistants don't have records and anyone who doesn't believe that Brewtser was being dishonest is kidding themselves. Analyze it all you want... he may not have technically been lying but he was certainly telling a half truth, and that's putting it nicely.

To me it just seems so obvious what the writer is trying to say here. Brewster has been on the winning staff of a few notable coaching legends. How could anyone interpret this as his HC record?

I'll tell you how. Because it says "In total, coach Brewster has a coaching record of 113-61-1. That's how.

Selling yourself in an unconventional way is not dishonest.

For example, I can (and often have, especially on applications) tell people that I am a valedictorian. This is not lying, as I did in fact have the best grades in my high school class. But I conveniently leave out the number of students in my small high school, so as not to diminish my accomplishments next to a valedictorian from a large high school. But saying that I am a valedictorian is neither lying nor dishonest.

I see the word "head" nowhere in that sentence. Nor any implication of it.

This is, without question, the most fruitful discussion in the history of GopherHole. The ongoing question of whether "coaching" is equivalent to "head coaching" within the context of one's W-L record on an online biography has been plaguing this program for as long as I can remember. We're not only providing a valuable service to Gopher football in addressing this issue head on, we're contributing to a better, more sustainable world. And it makes Jesus happy.

Here's to hoping this is an accurate representation of the tenor of discussion we can expect for the long, nine-month offseason.

I stuck with Brew through the horrible first season. I went to every event where he appeared. I offered him my help in many areas. I had a good relationship with him. I attended the scrimmage up at St. Johns with a college coach and this coach said it was one of the worst practices he had ever seen. I argued with him that it was a good practice because I WANTED so badly to believe in Brew. I stood by him during the slump last year. I was with him this year until the Wisconsin game. That's when I finally decided that I'd had enough. Brew is not a good coach. He may be a good recruiter (although he has yet to bring in the top guy in his own state). But as a motivator he is very sub par. Have you listened to his speeches? He repeats himself and seems lost. He raises his voice and pumps his chest but his words are empty. Then you have the Weber situation and his bad game decisions like wasting timeouts and losing to horrible teams. Having his recruits mature is not going to help him win games. He will not be a major winner.

You offered him your help? You cannot be serious.

In total, in summation, the aggregate of Brewster's coaching record is 113-61-1. How often do you here someone preface a head coaching record with "in total?" Never. The phrase "in total" is setting up the fact that they are aggregating numbers from various coaching positions. Further, everyone who moderately follows college football knows Tim Brewster did not have any head coaching experience - it's not like he is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. It is a selling point that he uses for recruiting purposes. And I am glad he does it.

The only way you can construe it as a lie is to: a.) look at the statement with cynicism and skepticism; b.) think Brewster wants to lie to improve his image; and c.) think Brewster is so dumb that he thinks people would believe the lie he made up to improve his self image. Or you you can look at it like a rational human being, and say, hey, this looks like marketing!

Worst thread ever!!!!
Second place is the link to the Longhorns website. That Brew Basher needs to get a life...going to other teams pages and whining? Pathetic.

The most amazing thing about this whole thing is that there are some people who think Brewster himself actually wrote the bio. I'm pretty sure that's what the SID and staff is for. The staff put this together, not Brewster.

I truly hope you are kidding. Most people know it wasn't on his resume'. But the fact that you think it was obvious that it wasn't his HC record is absurd. It flat out said "... has a career coaching record of..." and then listed the record which I can't remember specifically what that was but it was roughly 130-60 and maybe some ties in there. It was a complete lie on his part and a huge embarrassment. No one, not even the media, has taken this out of context, unless people say it was on his resume which isn't true. There was no other way to take it. That's what he was saying his career coaching record is. No one, I repeat NO ONE would ever count victories as their own when they were just assistant coaches, not even in the context you are talking about.

Well, we all knew, hopefully Maturi included as well as a couple of dim bulb writers and yourself, that Brewster had not been a head coach. Doesn't seem too tough to figure the context when you already know the history.

Those that do, do. Those that cannot snipe from the safety of a keyboard. Glad we're all on the same ship.
