Injury report

I don't think you understood what I was saying. You may be right about his feelings for the squad. It is his feelings towards Jerry Kill that I suggested where his negativism comes from. If you don't believe me that's fine but you should believe GopherProf. He has admitted here that he doesn't like Jerry Kill and would prefer a different coach.

Yikes! That's about the most awful thing you can say about someone. If he did say that, I'm sure he's sorry and, seeing the error of his ways, will ask for forgiveness. lol

IMO Eric Murray is our best cover corner. He blankets his guy and is in the right spot all the time. As soon as he learns to turn his head back to the pass he will be an All B1G CB. I hope that will happen next year. Could end up being one of the best CBs we've had around here in a while. Upside on this former 2-star recruit us HUGE.

I agree completely. I have been surprised by some who have said he has just been okay. I think he has done about as good as you can expect from a sophomore. Most of the time he has been left out on an island and he has been stride for stride with the receiver. Like you said, he just has to learn to look for the ball at certain times.

I think he has a very bright future and he is a great example of the coaches finding a diamond in the rough. If I remember correctly, most schools were just recruiting him as an offensive player. He came to a camp at the U, the coaches asked him to try defense, and he was very impressive.

I think he's been pretty accurate about where the program is at. A lot of people wanted a different coach 4 weeks ago, it's not a crime....

Who are these people? "A lot" of them? They ought to stand up and be counted today. Raise your hand if you're one of the ones that wanted Coach Kill gone?

LOL - You're right, it not a crime and I never suggested that it was. But from my perspective you are quite wrong that he is pretty accurate about the program. I am not surprised that you think this since you seem to agree with his postings. It is also that clear to me that what you believe is accurate and what I believe is accurate are quite different. I suspect that is because we have very different perspectives as to what has been happening over the past three seasons. While I have seen great progress on all the important things that are need to build a program you seemed to have seen little progress. I have always said and believed that turning this program around was going to take time and patience which it appears that neither of you appreciate.

It is clear that we are starting from very different starting points and perspectives and probably will never agree about this. The really good news to me though is that President Eric W. Kaler and Athletic Director Norwood Teague see things in a similar way as I do. That very important because it is a good indication that they have the patience and focus to see this transformation through. Thank god!

I hope Jon's surgery went well. I really hope it's not a career ender.

I like all four of those guys, but the problem is that there's only four. Wells has been injured all year, BBC is an unknown due to the injury, and Myrick has only played special teams. Getting 3-4 DBs and 3 quality O-lineman should be the two biggest priorities. We have a lot of youth and guys redshirting at pretty much every other position. Vereen's versatility has been huge for us this year, as there is no way we're 7-2 if he couldn't play CB.

I keep telling myself that 1-2 of the RBs we're recruiting will end up at CB. We're recruiting 5-6 backs really hard, and I don't see how we need more than 1-2 with Edwards redshirting.

As I've said repeatedly, I'm all for bringing in a Juco to provide some depth & signing enough CB's to replace the departing Sr's but it's certainly not a position of great concern. How many CB's do we play per game? We've basically been using 4. Wells, Murray, Shabazz & either Balthazar or Myrick (who has been playing some CB, not just Special teams). That means at the beginning of the season when BBC was still in the mix we went into the season with 5 experienced CB's & the Freshman Myrick. Most considered it the best depth we'd had at the position in forever.

There's zero evidence to suggest Wells has some sort of chronic shoulder injury. He was the best player in the secondary prior to his injury, arguably even the best player on the entire Defense even. To my knowledge the shoulder was fine heading into the season & he just injured it again. Sucks, but certainly doesn't indicate it's a career-ender as is being insinuated. Also, players routinely rehab from BBC's injury these days & are back on the field the next season (remember BBC got hurt early in the year). We go into next year with those four experienced CB's, a Juco, a couple Freshmen & we're ion pretty solid shape again imo.

I also wouldn't completely rule out moving Ced Thompson into that rotation a la Vereen did this year if injury forces it. Thompson was a CB in High School & could play the Under spot that Wells/Balthazar play. In Claey's system instead of your tiniest CB playing nickel you need a rigged tackler who can blitz from underneath. With Travis & Johnson ready to start at Safety & Levine a decent back-up, I could see Thompson filling that under CB role in a pinch.

Steven Montgomery is still only a Sophomore so he could still surprise us & contribute at CB too.

You're right about the Safeties as well. Cedric Thompson is back again next year as a Senior, both Damarious Travis & Antonio Johnson will be Juniors, Grayson Levine plays some, he'll be a Senior & Daletavious McGhee (who is red-shirting) is said to be a stand-out, with NFL type potential.

2-8-13 Post:

While I am excited to see each of the kids develop (hopefully) into contributing team members, I will go out on a limb and say that I really like Daletavious McGhee from Cedar Grove, GA. I watched the hudl highlights someone posted after he committed and then watched additional film on him. The first play on his November 4th film, he strikes an opponent's helmet off (albeit a penalty). That play is 1st play on this link: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1107346/...ights/29205406
Having said that, watching his films multiple times, I like his technique, emotion, and playmaking abilities. Will he play? I have no clue. I am a novice at this stuff. However, I do like his effort and play making abilities in a highly competitive DeKalb County.

There aren't enough psychologists in the world to tell you where my negativism comes from.

However, I don't "dislike" Kill (you would put it in such personal terms, because that's your own psychological shortcomings. That and you are a sycophant to anyone with authority and will talk down to anyone that questions it).

I doubted his ability to succeed at the B1G level. There is also a difference between doubt and certainty, and I'm obviously glad to see him proving my doubts wrong. I also never said I would prefer a different coach. A good day to you sir.

Monday's are always quiet. Tomorrow we should hear some news on Hageman, Engel, etc. They'll keep pretty quiet regarding Nelson.

Back to the topic.

If hope there is no hematoma with Nelson's pointer. If so, he could be out this week and possibly next, depending on the severity. Hip pointers affect the gait along with tons of pain. My guess is they will only give him the needle Saturday if the injury is "minor".

In the meantime, I guess he is only doing rehab and resting the area. No practice.

So who is Leidner's backup? Rhoda?? Maybe Limegrover will have to show some wildcat with Jones and work on a couple of passing plays.

they won't have a team without a competent QB if they have a choice, they will burn a redshirt if they have to.

Wasn't there a play on Saturday with Jones carrying the ball that looked like it was going to be a pass, but didn't play out because the defense disrupted it?

Yes, there was. He received the ball and looked downfield to pass but quickly pulled it down and ended up getting back to the line of scrimmage.

I have been waiting for this play but thought they would save it for one of the last two games. In the open practices Jones looked like a pretty good passer, he moved to WR because he saw the other QBs were far ahead of him in knowledge and experience and he wanted to play right now. I think Jones will be a star in the future - other teams will have to keep close track of him.

Wasn't Streveler the third stringer until he got hurt? What does our QB depth chart look like? Who are the options if Nelson is unable to dress this Saturday?

I believe Connor Rhoda has been number 3 the past few weeks with Streveler's hand injury.

LOL - We obviously see things differently. What I see as a pattern of negativity toward Kill you describe as doubt. That your right but I think GopherinPhilly described it best with the following quote to you:

I can't remember the latest injury update on Streveler, but if he's back to practicing, it appears No. 3 and 4 on the depth chart are true freshman. Would be a shame to burn a red-shirt this late in the season, but if Nelson is out, chances of Leidner playing the whole game without getting dinged aren't great, at least in my opinion.

At least we got that going for us. I shudder to think where the program would be without President Kaler and AD Teague on the same page as Killjoy.

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe Killjoy's attitude about this coaching staff is closely aligned to mine. If Kaler and Teague are also in agreement, which it seems they are, then I think that's all positive for the Gopher football program. Your comment makes it seem like you disagree.

We have to be running thin at center. Tommy O. had a great game. Does Epping move over if Olson were to go down. Perhaps Hayes, or Heifort?

At his press conference today Kill said yes to your bolded question above. He also talked about Heifort. He said he has practicing at the TE position but I believe he said that he would be getting some snaps at the center position this week.

It would be Epping & then Heifort per Coach Kill at today's press conference.

Oops, already answered. Had to log in first & was too slow.:)
