@GophersNow: I talked to Tubby later in the locker room and he said there could be staff changes in the offseason, especially if guys get jobs elsewhere

@NSandell: Andre Hollins after the game: "I predict Coach Smith will be back." #Gophers

That would seem logical.

Yeah, I'm sure that other schools will be knocking down our doors for the assistants as they have in previous years. Quality critical thinking by the other posters

Teague should do what everyone does with garbage. Throw it out.

Have we really gotten to the point where we accept being below average? Tubby has done nothing in the Big 10 in his time here. He's lead several team's that have underachieved expectations. His in-game decision making has been consistently terrible. Looking ahead, the talent level of this team isn't going to be better than 12-13 any time soon. How can we expect better results with the same coach and lesser talent?

Tell us how you really feel about Tubby.

Tubby has to shake up his staff and bring in a big man specialist and an offensive coach. Hopefully some guys that can recruit.

Knowing only what I've seen on the court this year and over the past 6 years, I'd fire him.

These guys know the inside stuff that we don't. Where does Tubby stand on recruiting for next year? If they feel he can get two of the three- then they will retain him.
What has been the mood of the team about the coaching? If it has been as bad as Playa claims- then he's gone. If on the other hand guys like Dre like playing for Tubby- then maybe he gets retained. How bad is the situation with the major boosters? If it's as bad as some here think- he's probably toast.

We should know in the next day or two.

Playa's mother took away his computer because he asked GopherLady for a pair of her panties.

If I were Teague, I would fire Tubby ASAP... my reasoning is that this is the best time to "start over." The new coach would have a whole year to get situated into his job, which should then be able to attract at least one of the big three from MN. Next year, I doubt we win 6 games in the BT. And Tubby will be on the hotseat again and it will be a year too late, since the recruits probably won't come somewhere so unstable.

Have you ever wondered why most of the transfers (out of MN) actually did a lot better than they were here? Then you look at Rodney, and see so much potential, yet he looks lost out there, and has looked lost his whole career at MN. I watched Cobbs play, watched Colt play, watched Siyani Chambers play (not a transfer, but probably should have been recruited as a pure point guard for us), and I can't help but get the feeling as if Tubby has no clue as to what he's doing.

Tubby retired 6 years ago. At times this year I was wondering if he was trying to get fired? His substitution patterns. Anyone notice that Florida got the big lead when he had the Otto line up in the game? I do not get it. Time to move on.......

Why would anyone wanna waste millions on a practice to facility to hand over the keys to a man who can't teach or coach a talented group how to beat a press or inbound the ball or god forbid, not leave shooters wide open?

Tubby has proven he can't teach and coach anymore. The problems our players have been making are correctable. Tubby is just incapable or doesn't know how to fix things...Time to move on and give someone else a chance and I don't care if we have to hire a HS coach...NO MORE TUBBY!

This.

Teague should make it official this time

I would not think of spending 2.5 million to buy a coach out that just went to the NCAA Tourney and now turn my focus to....Gopher Football

Agree with this. That $2.5MM saved needs to go towards getting our football budget out of the Big Ten basement.

The buyout will be $2.5 million a year from now too. It should be absolutely zero factor in the decision. Lack of financial support is not the reason the football team has sucked for 50 years.

Tubby has had 6 years to build the Gopher program. He has done very well in the non-conference season. Other than last seasons NIT run, his teams have finished very poorly every year. It has been evident for the last few years that Tubby is not interested in aggressively recruiting the talent to move up in the Big 10 standings. The outlook for the future with this roster is not optimistic. I like and respect Tubby as a person. He runs a clean program. Unfortunately if the Gophers are interested in finishing higher than 6th in the Big 10 going forward, it is time to move in a different direction.

Tubby will be back next year, we have no shot at the big three if we start over, with the way basketball recruiting works only one year to build a relationship won't be enough time. Tubby is at least a name and I'd rather have a slim chance than no chance. If we stink it up next year and Tubby goes 0/3 in recruiting then he's gone. For me assuming we finish in the 8-10 9-9 range in conference play and are hovering on the bubble, how Tubby does in keeping the in state talent will be the key factor to keeping his job, but getting a tourney win gives him the right to comeback next year. The U will be crucified nationally if Teague cans Tubby.

If you are honest with yourself, would you come if you had the offers these guys have? I'm thinking hell no. 2014 class shouldn't dictate the future of the program.

Usually I'd agree, but considering how that class is a program changing class and we just won a tourney game and quite honestly we have the talent to get back next year, the Hollins boys will be the clear leaders of the team. Tubby deserves to stay, but I guess will have to agree to disagree.

Why would anyone wanna waste millions on a practice to facility to hand over the keys to a man who can't teach or coach a talented group how to beat a press or inbound the ball or god forbid, not leave shooters wide open?

Because the practice facility is not for Tubby (or any other one person). It's for the program. If you're a donor, even if you hate Tubby's guts, it would still make sense to donate as soon as possible to get the ball rolling on a facility. If Tubby comes back next year but the program continues to struggle, he'll be gone before the facility is built anyways.

I still love Tubby and can't believe he has failed here as badly as he has.

I think this year was as good as it gets for him, and it wasn't all that great.

I would urge him to let Tubby go, or better yet, financially incent him to "retire" so both sides get to look good.

It really depends. If I was Tyus who is the type of guy who makes teammates better, I would probably go to a team with big name scorers around me. He will look good on whatever team he is on, but he'll look incredible with a ton of talent around him. I've seen Steisma and Gelalable ruin enough of Rubio's great reads to understand a PG can look great with some talent around him.

However, if I am Vaughn, I really have to think about it. He's going to get a TON of PT here right away. He would be the MAN on our team and probably be the star, at least for our fanbase the second he arrived on campus. I think he'd be fantastic everywhere, but as a true scorer, he'll get ample looks here.

If I am Teague, I make the move to hopefully have Tubby retire sometime this week. If he won't go for getting the same buyout for "retiring", then I make the move to fire him.

2 key points:

1. The buyout is the same next year and I see almost no chance of Tubby doing enough next year to justify keeping him around past that point. If the fan base is mostly ready for a change now, a 7th season of .500 or below Big Ten basketball certainly won't go over well.

2. None of the "big 3" are going to choose Minnesota if they don't know who the coach will be. They all will likely sign in November, and Tubby's seat will still be very hot at that point...unless Teague makes some sort of strong commitment to him beyond the 2013 season in the next week. The recruiting class that would take the floor in 2014 will likely be VERY weak because kids will all have options at schools where they know who the coach will be.

If your reasoning to keep Tubby is that you think he's got a shot at 1 or 2 of the "big 3", then you should be campaigning for Teague to give him a contract extenstion or increase his buyout to a ridiculous amount. As long as there is doubt about who will be the coach in 2014, recruiting will suffer.

Not sure why Tubby would retire and walk away with nothing instead of getting canned and pocketing a few million?

You don't fire a coach at the peak of his performance (even if it is not what you'd expect at this point), you give him next year and if he doesn't make the tourney then you can fire him. It would look horrible to fire him after he did something that we hadn't done this century. Also, this gives him a fair shot at the Big 3 and another year to try and get a practice facility started.

So basically you give him one extra year, if he gets at least one of the Big 3 and makes the tourney he is retained. If he misses on all of the Big 3 and fails to make the NCAA Tournament, fire him. I think this is preciously what Teague will do.

I mostly agree, but I don't think the bar can be simply making the tournament next year should be the bar. I am more concerned about progress in results than recruits, so I wouldn't tie it to landing the big 3. My thoughts are at a bare minimum he needs to match his round of 32 performance and show improvement in one of the following ways:

1) Sweet 16
2) Above .500 B1G record
3) BTT title
4)a finish above Wisconsin in the standings (I know this one wouldn't necessarily show improvement over past years if Wisconsin tanks, but a big part of what I hope for out of this program is a chance to look down at Wisconsin in the standings, so I'd take this)

Interesting question and as of right no I have no clue what I'd do. Teague has a tough tough decision to make.

Some fators we my not know about though are:

1) Does Norwood know of anyone who wants the job? Is he convinced Flip or Shaka would take it and that they'd be an upgrade?
2) What has Practice Facility extrodinaire T Denny said about the situation? Is his multi million dollar check contingent on Smith being gone?

I thin those are the two biggest questions that we just dont know the answers to.

If Teague has someone in his back pocket, I think he makes the move.

If he plans to have an open search, I think he waits until there are concrete plans for practice facility.

If we had "major" boosters, they would have figured out a way to get the facilities we need by now. I know the effect on donors has to be calculated in, but I am having a hard time seeing the fruits of these so-called "major" boosters. If they really want to "boost" they will help provide the infrastructure needed for a successful basketball program, rather than just head hunting when it is not going well.

If we win and there is a dream of more to come, then we will have major boosters. There's a lot of money in this town, but there are a lot of options. The money goes where the excitement is.

I'm with you Parski. The Florida game showed us talent wise we are not quite there yet. I was disappointed with some of the bad losses the team had this year, but every team in the NCAA tournament had bad losses this year (including Florida, Michigan, Indiana, OSU, MSU...). This team still needs a little more talent, and I say we give Tubby a pat on the back and focus efforts on landing Ellenson, Vaughn, Jones, and Reid.

The question I have - outside of the Andre and Austin, what do we have returning next year? Eliason? In the BigTen, Eliason is a back up - at best. So, a year from now, my expectation is that we will have maybe four BigTen wins? Who on earth is going to want to keep Tubby then? Especially if none of the big three choose to come to MN, and that seems more and more likely every day.

So, assuming we're as doomed as I just described for next year - 4-14 in the Big Ten, we'll have paid Tubby another $2M in salary, and oh yeah, we will still have to pay him that $2.5M buy-out.

Lets move on now.
