If Tubby leaves...who the F would take this job?

Not firsthand... but feel confident when I say that he would take this job in a second.

As for Tubby having a down year, it's one thing to draw up a play, get a good look, and have the player miss... I can live with that... but he has done a terrible job of drawing up plays in crucial situations... his substitution pattern has been baffling at times -- Dawson in before Armelin on Tues. for example... and I still can't figure out, even when Nolen was healthy, what they are trying to accomplish on offense.

Dawson and Armelin don't play the same position. Do you want Armelin to sub in at the 4 or 5? Recently, I have noticed Tubby subbing Dawson in early in the 1st to get his big men a rest then Dawson disappears for the majority of the rest of the game.

Armelin plays significant minutes and Dawson gets spot duty everyonce in awhile. Your complaint about Dawson coming in before Armelin makes no sense unless Tubby trotted Dawson out there to play some guard.

The Big Ten is the most recognized, highly respected and prestigious conference in the country, outside of the SEC.;)

There are only 11 (soon to be 12) men's basketball head coaching jobs. We would not have a shortage of quality candidates. The key, as always, is picking the right guy.

The funniest thing in this thread is that people think Tubby's replacement will earn $2 MM/yr.

No chance, unless we pull another rabbit out of our hat and get another power coach. If you're going lower level ball though, no way in the world they're touching 2 mil.

Mo Walker is one of the 6 or 7 best players on this team. If he had stayed healthy he would have made a significant contribution. Notice I didn't say "the 3 best" or anything of that nature. At the time Mo got hurt he was the best player off the bench. Losing 3 players from the top of your rotation is debilitating for any team. Maybe that wording suits you better.

Still not happy. Mo would have been the 8th best player, only ahead of Chip, Mav and Dawson (Chip is more valuable now). Losing 3 players can be debilitating, but we still have our 3 big men, and they would see plenty more minutes ahead of Mo. Mo would have averaged maybe 5 minutes a game, so to say that his loss is a main reason for the teams struggles is unjustifiable. Plus, we only saw him against small Non-Con opponents, so who's to say he would be able to perform the same in conference play. On another note, if Mo was still healthy, I'm afraid that Tubby would have turned to The Super Big Line-Up of Blake, Ralph, Trevor, Colt and Mo. I'm not ripping on Mo as a player or person, I'm just saying that lumping in his injury as a reason for the teams play doesn't make sense.

It sure seems that we are a coach killing school for BB. Look at our history...we have killed our fair share...or they killed themselves while at our school...either way...they be dead.

Huh? We;ve had four head coaches since 1975.

Michigan has had six in that time period. Indiana 4. Iowa 6. Wisconsin 7. Illinois 4. Northwestern 6.

I stick by my statement as I feel Mo was the best freshman at the time of his injury and with Rodney's inconsistent play, it wouldn't be shocking for Mo to be considered equal to Rodney as a player, not as an athlete. I think your forgetting what Mo did and letting the recent play of Austin and Chip sway your decision making. I also believe you are forgetting about the significant minutes Mo played against UNC and West Virginia, both of whom have more that capable big men.

Also, the loss of Mo was big because it eliminated one of the 2 quality bigs off the bench. Mo was steadily progressing and was on the verge of being a solid player for this team.

I honestly hope your joking about that lineup you just put up there. That would create so many mismatches for the gophers. They would get killed. On defense, there's no way you could play man, so who do you put on the top of the zone? They could go 1-3-1 but I'm not sure Blake is quick enough to play the top of that zone.

That would be the slowest team in the history of D1 hoops.

He was also at Mayville State in ND and South West State? I think it was at a school in Marshall, MN but I could be wrong.

He took the job at Mayville after his alma mater Bismark St. Mary's wouldn't even interview him. The AD sent him a letter thanking Will Miles (I might have the name they used wrong) for his interest but they had a better candidate.

He turned around the program in less than three years, he did the same at Southwest State, or what ever they call themselves now. Then after taking the job at NDSU and beating top 10 Marquette at Marquette he got a call from the AD at St. Mary's asking him if he wanted to INTERVIEW for the job. He told them no but this guy Will Miles might.

I didn't know Maturi was the AD at St Marys.;)

I believe the rest of the story, but I don't believe this part. Why would a Division II school (a school that was in its first year of reclassifying from NAIA to NCAA) think it had a shot at a successful Division I coach? Furthermore, why would they request that a successful Division I coach interview? That AD would be the worst and most-out-of-touch boss on the planet. That is too improbable to have actually happened.

(P.S., it's University of Mary, not St. Mary's.)

Maybe he was talking about St. Mary's High School in Bismarck. Although, I would think a coach with college experience could at least get a job at bismarck high or bismarck century.

I considered that possibility, but he did say alma mater. Miles grew up in Doland, SD, and graduated from Doland High. I sort of know him (not really) because his HS is in the same conference as mine and he played basketball (maybe also football, not sure) against my oldest brother, who was a grade ahead of him. He then went to Mary in Bismarck and came back to Northern in Aberdeen later for his master's.

5 if you count Molinari as the Interim HC...and your timeline conveniently leaves out Musselman form 71-75. And every school on this list except for NW has more post season success than us and haven't been sanctioned twice during that time period like we have.

Since 71:

Musselman - 71-75 - Resigned under investigation
Dutcher 75-86 - Resigned on principle
Haskins - 86-99 Fired for Cheating
Monson 99-2006 Fired for sucking
Molinari 2006-7 Interim
Tubby 2007 - Today...

No, I'm sure your right about the guy meaning UMary. I was joking about St. Mary's High.

I know you were...but I really did think for a split-second that he was talking about St. Mary's HS.

You left out Jimmy Williams who was interim HC for half a BT season in between Dutch and The Gem.

Go Gophers!!

Back to the original post - I may have missed it but I don't recall seeing any on this board calling for Tubby to be fired or even fine with the idea of him leaving. There have been plenty who have wondered if he is worth the $2 million or whatever an extension would bring to him based upon results. There are others, with much overlap, who have questioned the direction of the team and whether some of the "bad luck" may due to coaching shortcomings. Obviously injuries aren't the coaches fault, but what about lack of replacements? Recruiting questionable characters? Departures for other reasons? On court performance, roster status notwithstanding?

He is having a down year? I'm getting so sick of people ragging on Tubby for supposedly doing a bad job coaching this team while ignoring the circumstances of the situation. This team is missing 3 of its best players and its senior leader who happens to make the offense run. This team is not equipped to play in one of the best conferences without those 3. Their only option at point guard with Nolen out is Hoffarber and this effectively eliminates his best attribute.
Unheralded freshman are playing big minutes on this team. While they are playing well for the most part, they are not contributors on a top tier big ten team. Not this year at least. This is shown in their recent late games shortcomings. If Tubby wants to go with all upperclassman you essentially have 4 post and a shooting guard on the floor. Blake's not gonna beat anyone off the dribble and no one else is gonna consistently hit a shot or put the ball on the floor for that matter.

When this team was fully intact, Tubby had them playing very well and ranked in the top 15. Injuries are part of the game and let's acknowledge that this and alter expectations accordingly.

Tubby is a coach not a magician. He's not gonna pull a rabbit out of his hat. Due to the circumstances, this team just doesn't measure up.

The fact is this team is missing the injured players tremendously.

Slow clapping....

I was told this story by a DII coach who was a student assistant at Mary. His brother played for Miles at Southwest State. I trust this guy a lot. I also did a camp with a head coach Mary had just fired. He said the people at that school think they are running a KU type program.

I drove by/through that campus once. Wow. Can't believe they play DII. Pretty setting but seems more monastery like than institute of higher learning.

Both coaches said it wasn't that hard to get kids to come. Most everyone they talk to think Bismark is the size of Mayville. They said the kids would be so impressed there was anything that would leaving remembering the place much bigger that it is.
