If this team gets hot at the end of the year...

The main complaints at UK were style of play, recruiting and his staff. His style of play was not one that a lot of UK fans liked, much like Joe B Hall. He wasn't going to win this battle from day. I liked the hire from day 1 though because I knew we were getting a very good coach.

That's just the thing, the same gripes UK fans had about Tubby there are the same ones that are most vocally complained about here.

I personally think Tubby has recruited at a very acceptable level for a program like Minnesota. But the 2014 class will, fairly or not, be a major factor in how his abilities are evaluated by the fan base and media.

His style of play has been good against lower tier competition when our players can create shots over inferior players, but it doesn't hold up against more athletic/talented clubs.

I have been a pro-Tubby guy on GH for a long time, and I do hope that he can continue here and be successful. But if he's not willing/able to address the biggest deficiencies in how he runs the program and team what's the point of keeping him around? His coaching floor might be higher than most, as evident by his consistent 20-win season count, but if he is reluctant to make the effort to continue the climb higher is that really what the U needs?

i love the bolded parts the best, you have decided that tubby can only beat inferior teams with his style. you dont acknowledge coaching against all the top 10 wins tubby has had here. must have just been lucky...

how does he climb higher? can he do that when we are years behind our peers in what we can offer recruits? we arent mich st where our fanbase shows up every game of he year no matter how good or bad we are. our fanbase cant be happy, many just assume we are going to just fall apart the next game (i call it the vikings attitude). This leads to a weak atmosphere from game to game. we would be undefeated at home if the crowd was even 70% of what it was vs the hoosiers. we have more problems than just a coach and staff. we have to make a culture change and i dont think anyone is really sure how to do that?

West Coast: as to your point about inferior competition vs. strong competition, I feel like this year has been the opposite. We have been able to grab wins against Indiana, Wisconsin, and MSU while at the same time losing to Northwestern and Iowa.

Lakes: I think the culture change has to start with a season that ends awesome. Our fanbase assumes we are going to fall apart at the next game because they have seen it. Tubby has had multiple teams get ranked somewhere in the season, but has not ended a season ranked yet. Even this year, we were #8 at one point, but pending a miraculous tournament run, we won't be close to that point so we will have fallen off yet again. People talk about peaking at the right time, and we need to do that, finish a year near our high water mark for the year.

I think style of play complaints are inevetiable. Most Sixers fans didn't like Larry Browns style of play but they got to the NBA finals. Style of play wasn't why they lost. Izzo and Ryan don't exactly play or coach up tempo exciting styles of play but they have both been pretty successful. So what's the difference? Minnesota needs consistent success, plus some facilities and IMO they are getting there but climbing a hill. There's not a consistent pool of in state players that are elite or very good. Though there's been players here and there the last few years and Tubby has landed them. Problem is, everyone else in the Big Ten is getting good players too so it goes back to culture, facilities and consistent success. I think making the ncaa tournament 3 out of 6 years is way more consistent than the history of the Golden Gopher program. I think how they finish this year will determine whether they ascend a little bit more. Even though Williams and Mbakwe will be gone, you return a lot of good players next year. The development of a Buggs, Ellenson, Ellison and Walker will be critical to success next year. IMO though, you can't ask for much more than Coleman, Hollins and Hollins returning next year. Dre is going to be a star next year, I'd almost guarantee it, he just needs to get a little bit stronger. If this kid hits the weight room hard he is an absolute steal for you guys since he wasn't highly highly touted. Someone on the staff though, had an eye for his talent and that needs to be acknowledged. I think you guys will be allright but I agree the 2014 class offers even more promise and success than you've had in a long time.

Tubby has certainly been better than recent history, but I think it is fallacious to say that he is better than all of Gopher history because he goes to the tournament more when you consider that many of the past coaches had a much smaller tournament field to try to get into. Before 1975, they had to win the B1G just to make the tournament. That would be like saying that Glen Mason was our most successful football coach because he was at the helm for 7 of our 15 bowl appearances and 3 of our 5 bowl victories.

Exactly.

I would also be hesitant to use the 20 wins benchmark when comparing to years past.

I was going to say this same thing. Musselman would've gone to the tournament in three of his four years (all of those wins still count). Dutcher would've gone five times in a stretch of six years (assuming a .500 record would've gotten them in).
