If the Flip reports are true and it's:

If it's all been done for PR to cover for their homerun hire which is better than Flip- It had better be a knockout hire.

If they got turned down because they wanted control over Flips staff- then we have a real egomaniac piece of work in the AD office.

If Flip turned it down and it was only because he really wanted to be with the Wolves, then a lot of people should be pretty disappointed in Flip for leading us on for months.

If Teague thinks it's a smarter play to hire Enfield or Stephens or some Villa 7 assistant- he's on the hot seat. It's show me time with the fans and boosters.

Flip has been all but openly campaigning for job for a month. Something is rotten, we just don't know what it is yet.

Whatever it is -if this is true- the AD has managed to put his new hire in a horrible position. Unless this is a big time hire a good portion of the town will always point to the fact that Flip could have been had. That pressure starts right away with the fall recruiting class- fair or not.

Now Teague has put himself in a postition where he has to pull a rabbit out of the hat with this hire.

I suspect Flip cares about the U enough he'll help smooth it all out once it's over (i.e. I never wanted to coach in college). But I'm not sure everyone will believe him.

If Flip never wanted to coach in college (which I agree he may say after the fact) he never would have agreed to have the big Sunday STrib profile 6 or so weeks ago when he flat out said it was nonsense that people would suggest he couldn't recruit HS kids.

Go Gophers!!

I disagree with Flip openly campaigning. He was more openly criticizing the horrible coaching he saw from Tubby. Flip knew a coaching change was needed, but I don't remember him saying explicitly that it should be him.

!00% Flip wants the job of coaching the Gophers. You are not dreaming of owning the TWolves and going to high school basketball games in Minnesota. You are also not hoping to be TWolves GM and spending the majority of your time focused on the Gophers. It's freaking obvious he wants to coach the Gophers by his actions....not to mention his words.

It is also obvious, it's not about money that he turned down the job. It is as stated about being able to hire your staff on your terms.

How much money do we have? Buzz's buyout is supposedly $4million dollars. He already makes $2.8 at Marquette. It's a basketball only school and many other reasons stated as why he wouldn't come here.

If USC hires Enfield, then maybe Marshall is in play but supposedly we have not approached him to date. Will we tell him he needs to hire Villa 7 assistants too?

I think Flip will be nice abot it but I don think he will lie for them. I think he will say that that U wanted a different kind of guy. I can tell you who won't cover for Teague: the local media. Barriero, Hartman, Reusse and the rest who are always ready to blast the Gopher program are going to be relentless on this one if it doesn't work out. What a golden opportunity missed in terms of PR. These guys would have given more support to Gopher buckets than it has gotten in years and years.

If the basketball program is similar to the football program we might expect to get the "Jerry Kill" of basketball coaches.

The initial reaction to Jerry Kill was one of disdain and disbelief. The jury is still out as to whether he will raise the program out of the ashes.

NT and crew may very well have a similar type basketball coach that they bring in. Will a coach like that be a 3 strike coach for the big 3 recruits? Maybe, but what have been our chances with the big 3 anyway?

What is in the best interest of the Gophers program for the long-term? I really don't know, but I suspect NT and his entourage have an idea. I'll have to trust them, whether they deserve that trust or not.

He could never have openly campaigned for the job while Tubby was in it. That wouldn't have been right and he knew it. He said all he could to make it obvious that he could be had.

Flip would have said up front he wasn't interested if he was interested. He was interested. For once in this process I believe the sources. Offer was made and turned down. Can't think of any reason that would make more sense than Woody wanting to insert one of his cronies as an assistant.

The basketball program isn't even close to what the football program was when they hired Jerry Kill.

You think him going to the local high school games was an accident?

True, but we were tied for 7th in the B1G this year and our best EVER record was 6th under Flubby. My analogy is that Kill came in and has worked hard to build something. It would not be a bad hire to get a basketball coach with a work ethic like Kill and that is something that Flubby lacked. The Flubster was passive and unwilling to work hard to build beyond the mediocrity that he had.

This right here. I suspect this is as discouraging for Flip as it is for his boosters in the fan base. I'll never believe it couldn't have been made to work.

The Gopher football program is one of the worst BCS jobs and Tim Brewster was a disaster.

The Gopher basketball program is a above average/good BCS job and Tubby Smith was far from a disaster.

Not even close to the same situation.

..and yet when it comes to the desirability of the job there doesn't seem to be much difference except maybe in the minds of Gopher Basketball fans.

I guess we'll find out. The football program could never have hired the equivalent of Tubby Smith in the first place though...

If we lost out on Flip because of Teague's demands for his staff then I want his a$$ fired immediately. Enberg is a one-hit wonder nerd, Buzz is not coming and Marshall does nothing for me personally. These are very dangerous times for this program...don't kid yourselves. Our shot at any of the Big 3 is done and we're also starting to look like the ugly gal that can't get a prom date.

Both very good points but if memory serves the Smith hire was a complete surprise with all National and even most locals saying "Tubby's going to coach the Gophers?"

Agreed. Marshall is understandable and I could live with that pick. Passing on Flip (by giving him an insulting offer) for Enfield (even though he may someday be great) would be insane. We ain't getting Buzz.

If the job was offered to Flip and turned down by flip because the AD wanted control over assistants, that is not a real offer. When you hire the right person for the job, you give them control to do the job. That said, it is pure speculation on what transpired. Flip could have been a home run hire. Passionate about the program, former player and assistant coach at the program, as well as ex NBA coach. At one point, there is no doubt he wanted the job.

I agree for the most part. If Teague wanted a lot of control over the staff, that's a problem. If Teague simply said that "we're not hiring sons of the coaches" it looks bad, any qualified candidate is ok, then Flip is nuts.

To be honest, I don't know what happened. If it was a "no unqualified assistants, even if they're family", I am 100% behind Teague. If Teague wanted more control than that, he was out of line.

I doubt Flip was ever the guy the AD wanted. This might have been a PR move but that is giving the AD a whole lot of credit which he might not deserve.

Marshall and Buzz are really good coaches and neither is really likely.

Unfortunately for the Flip supporters, it looks like it's Flip or the Enfields/Macks of the world.

So you don't think we offered Flip?

I don't like hard and fast rules, "we've been burned with that before, so we're never doing that again". If you have the right person for the job, you give them the opportunity to do it. If not, you do not have the right person for the role.

Actually that's unfortunate for Gopher fans. Unless they lose their egos and get this thing rectified.
