IF Flip is the guy - What would his staff look like?

I Flip is the hire all the assistants need to be from the college game. We are trying to win basketball games, not find jobs for already wealthy alumni.

While I am questioning that. Flip has seen the abuse that Tubby and Saul got for being the father and son tandem. Flip is a smart man and will not hire Ryan as an assistant to expose him to that level of abuse and to possibly stunt his development as a coach. Ryan wants to be a coach and working for his dad may not help his career path. I also do not see Flip hiring one of his old time NBA assistants. I think again, Flip is a smart man that will realize he needs someone younger, in tune with college BB, and willing to put in the hours to recruit and coach. That again was one of the complaints with Tubby's staff, they were older, content and lazy. Flip is very energetic and as I have said before, he has a passion for the game and for the U that will drive him to succeed.
 

You bring up some good point that are also concerns of mine.

This of course is IF Flip is the coach. Some people think the rumors of Flip being at the top of the list were put out by Flip or his camp. Hard to say.
 

I have a hard time believing Thorson would leave his current gig, but it's possible. He knows the game as well as anyone.

If Flip is planning to hire Zierden, then he (Flip) is the wrong hire. He can't make the coaching staff his "old boys club". That is my one concern about him - he needs to bring in someone familiar with the college game.

This was Monson's downfall from the beginning. He hired his wedding party. Hopefully, if Flip is as well connected as we want to believe, he will get some coaches with recent college and recruiting experience and connections. The good thing is that he is well known here, and he can focus on guys with national connections in recruiting. Not sure if in this thread, but Rouser is right, we are so fixated on the 2014 Local Big 3 that we forget that the long term sustainability of the program is BOTH keeping the local talent at home AND getting top talent from other places.

Just curious, but what did Freddy do? Is his staff pals or the best college people he could find? Don't follow closely enough to know.
 


Freddy kept one from the old staff (Otzelberger), brought in a guy with some recruiting connections to NYC that he worked with when he was with the Wolves (Abdelmassih), and brought in Bobby Lutz, a guy with a dozen years of experience as a college head coach at UNC Charlotte (just Charlotte now). I think the Lutz hire was great for Freddy, even though he only stayed for the one year.

I think Flip would do well to hire a young Gopher alum (Bickerstaff, Q Lew, or Ben Johnson) and then bring in an experienced college guy with some connects and some X and O chops. The third spot needs to be a young guy that will recruit, recruit, recruit. Hire Ryan as your director of BBall Ops and we have a staff.

Bickerstaff is the perfect guy, #2 assistant with responsibility for player development.
 

Zierden very sharp x and o guy has home in Mn friend of Flip obvious high quality get.
 





Saul, Chem abuse we don't even know about!! Could never remember alums or ex players-- he was the recruiter!! Jay Pivac, known local/friend of FLIP/National JC champ coach/hard core basketball guy/tireless worker--needs to be somewhere on the staff!! FLIP, WILL TURN THE BIG THREE!! FLIP is the guy who has everything that incoming players want/ to get to the next level--knows EVERYONE in the NBA--Owners/Coaches/and every major player on his speed dial/players coach/forgot more last week then most guys know!! This deal WLL WORK!!
