IF Flip is the guy - What would his staff look like?

I'll take a crack at this one:

Big Man Coach - Jim Peterson
Guard Coach - Trent Tucker
Recruiting Coordinator - JB Bickerstaff
Quality Control - Quincy Lewis
Bench Coach - Natalie Kane
Bench Coach's Supervisor - Slim Tubby

Well, I think you were kind of joking with this, but there is a part of me that would LOVE it if we had nothing but former Gophers on the coaching staff.

What better way to legitimately shine a positive light on our past, than to let the players from the past, come in, take over and be in total control, snag all the top local talent, and have MINNESOTANS/GOPHERS resurrect the Minnesota Gophers on our own terms and by our efforts and with our money and our resources.

Would Bobby Jackson leave his assistant coaching position at Sac? Would the U forget the past and welcome Bobby? Is he 'tight' with Flip?

Jimmy Williams if available from Memphis
Trent Tucker
Villa 7 choice
Bobby Jackson if would leave Sacramento

Assistant coach Randy Wittman. I'm only half kidding.

Seriously, my guess is he'd try to get a highly-regarded Minnesota high school coach on staff. Beyond that, my guess is he's got more than a few quality guys in his Rolodex (for those too young to know what a Rolodex is, it's a desk-top accessory that was used to file phone numbers and other contact information before the advent of the cell phone).

Sam Cassel was on Flip's bench in Washington....

Sam returning the TC would be the best thing about this hiring.

My favorite Sam Cassel moment: Him running down the court doing the "I got big balls" dance.

Second favorite: I went to Bella Note on a night after going to a Wolves game, a game that Sam sat out because of a hamstring issue, the first thing I see is Sam on the dancefloor grinding low with 250 lbs woman. I bought him a drink!

Walter Bond should be on the staff based upon his quality posts on GI!

I like the 5-7 year plan idea. I think flip would include Taylor unless he thinks he has a good enough chance with the 3 Amigos to get them himself. I also like the chief recruiter concept and if this person can coach big men or shooting that would help out. It is fun to speculate and I hope we do hire Flip.

If Flip is the guy, he has more than 5-7 years in him. He's 58, he should be able to coach 10 more years.

A lot of Bucks fans on the board I read really want him to be the Bucks head coach. He may have better options than college assistant. Love Cassell from his Big 3 days with the Bucks though.

If Taylor is so great like I'm always reading about on here, why didn't Tubby have a great class of recruits every year? I don't know him so I'm not personally hating on him. Just not sure why he is so highly regarded?

If Ryan Saunders were an assistant, I would be able to say I was a classmate of someone on the staff. Sat right behind him and Abu-Shamala in Biogeography of the Global Garden. Haha

Taylor is considered a good coach and recruiter but some of his limitations in the recruiting arena may be due to who he worked for. Tubby was a coach a number of players did not want to play for while here.

I think Taylor did a decent job recruiting, but I'm not sure Teague was satisfied in this area so I don't think Taylor will be back. The constant message we heard during the Tubby area was that key recruits didn't know if they had an offer or not. There was obviously confusion amongst the Gopher staff. I'm confident that Flip's staff would be fully coordinated on that topic. I also think Flip would look hard at adding athletes that can shoot, which never seemed to be a priority for Tubby.

Vince Taylor should be a part of it if at all possible.

This could be one of the major issues in determining whether Flip gets the job. If Flip says he wants to name his own staff, including his son, that could turn out to be a deal-breaker. I get the sense that Teague is looking for a very specific type of coach, and he may want input into the staff.

Also, if Flip is the coach, I would expect to see at least one or two younger assistants - maybe people who are tied into the AAU circuit and can relate to the younger players.

1 suggestion - if you were going to go for a HS coach - Dave Thorson of De La Salle has some college experience - and he just happens to have a junior PF who would look VERY good in maroon and Gold.

Don't worry Dr. Don, someone will solve the riddle for you in the next few days. I just want to see how informed all of the "know it all's" really are. So far we don't have as many insiders on the "hole" as one might have thought.

That's because "insider" Nadine is spending her time tweeting rather than posting on her board!!

Thorson was on the Gopher staff at one point. Does anyone here remember if he worked for Monson or Haskins?

By the way he looks now, I'd say Flip could, with some initial success in the first 2-3 years, have as many as another 12 or more years left in him.

58 is maybe pushing it, for a new coach. But the thing is, once a coach is on a roll, such as Paterno or Gagliardi, age as a factor disappears.

If Flip was able to get the Big 3 to sign on, that would instantly make him 10 years younger!!! Seriously!!!

I would guess that the staff would include both Don Zierden and Ryan Saunders. Zierden has been with flip through much of Flip's NBA tenure and is currently on Wittman's staff with the Wizards. Not coincidentally, Ryan Saunders is also on the Wizards staff right now, although in a lesser role. Zierden is a good teacher of the game, but I can't imagine him being an effective recruiter. I am also not sure that Zierden leaves an NBA assistant job to rejoin Flip in Minnesota, but I don't think Wittman is a lock to be retained in Washington.

My level of excitement for a potential Flip hire is largely dependent on who would be that 3rd assistant. In my opinion, Flip's got to find an established ace recruiter to join his staff at Minnesota.

This is what I have been saying. I am already assuming Ryan will be on staff...so folks should not even question that. That leaves two more guys. Assuming one guy is a long time Saunders buddy (Zierden), the final staff member is crucial. Is it just me, or is this where Teague and Ellis could greatly help? They have a long list of ace assistant coaches.. Flip should allow them to be the HR department and supply 5 names.. flip interviews those guys and picks one?

What I don't want to see is a staff that looks like a fricking Gopher alumni halftime show with Trent Tucker, Quincy Lewis and Ryan Saunders.

Please god, have an actuall college hoops junkie assistant on staff..

Quick update. Double t on fan just now pretty much said he would take a spot on flips staff if offered.

Needs to hire Larry Novotny(Alexandria Aces) to run the pregame warm-up show.
