I think I've talked myself into being pro-Flip. With that being said, it's somewhat contingent on what his staff ends up looking like. I can see him going in a number of directions since he hasn't been around the college game in over 20 years.

NBA assistants: Who has he commonly hired as assistants at his various head coaching gigs in the NBA? I have to imagine he'd hire at least one former NBA assistant (possibly as his head assistant), someone that he is really comfortable with. Has he had any assistants in the NBA that have spent significant time in the college game (recently)? I'm not a Timberwolves fan and my NBA interest has been declining every year since 2001 (Bucks fan), so I really have no idea.

Former Players: Would Flip consider bringing on a former player as an assistant? Possibly someone that could impress recruits **cough Garnett cough**? Are there any former players out there that have already began coaching? Didn't someone mention Anthony Peeler?

Villa 7: Would Flip allow Teague and Ellis to suggest assistants that they are high on? I'm sure Flip will want final say on his staff so this one may be more unlikely, but I'm sure most fans would hope Flip would consult with Teague and Ellis to find some good college basketball minds since Flip has been away from the college game for so long.

Family: It's probably a given that Ryan will be an assistant. Former Gopher player (kind of :) ) and currently has a gig with the Wizards in the NBA. Maybe Teague would say no to this after dealing with Saul.

What do you guys think a staff would look like?

Did you just say that Flip should have Garnett as an assistant? I'm speechless..

you need a college degree to coach at the U

I'm not sure Garnett even has a high school degree, it worked out OK for him!

Is there a greater than 5% chance that Vince Taylor stays?

I'll take a crack at this one:

Big Man Coach - Jim Peterson
Guard Coach - Trent Tucker
Recruiting Coordinator - JB Bickerstaff
Quality Control - Quincy Lewis
Bench Coach - Natalie Kane
Bench Coach's Supervisor - Slim Tubby

Please no Whitman and no Ryan Saunders. I'm sick of seeing a a son of our coach on the sidelines. Lets go after some guys who have earned the position.

I have no idea what Flip might be thinking, but it would not surprise me at all to see Trent Tucker in some capacity. Not sure what he would bring coaching-wise, but he could be a big asset in recruiting.

My Guess is:

JB Bickerstaff or Quincy Lewis - one or the other but not both.
A Villa 7 selection
Vince Taylor
A former NBA player turned coach.

I'm sure he will hire Tyus Jone's dad. ;)

Chris Carr? He has a lot of connections in the area. I don't know how well connected his Hoops43 thing is, but you sure he his name a lot.

Can I write the Position Description for Bench Coach?

:D

Much more likely than hiring Tyus' dad is hiring his older brother, Jadee. Doubtful, but you never know.

Ryan Saunders may be where he is right now because of who his dad is, but he is a worker with his head on straight. Definitely not just resting on being Flip's kid. Also definitely not anything like Saul.

What about Ben Johnson, currently an assistant at Nebrasaka? Or Niko Medved, assistant at Colorado St.?

Chris Carr? No.

You hit on a scenario that I've been noodling. Teague swung for the fences with the absolute top candidates. Once that was off the table, I'm beginning to wonder if Teague isn't going for a two-phase long term plan. Consider this...

Hiring Flip now energizes the local fans, who buy tickets, and the boosters, whose Teague needs to build the practice facility. Woody and Ellis flex their Villa 7 muscles to identify one or two up-and-coming assistants who are great recruiters. Presto, you have contenders to succeed Flip and be the long term solution. They get to learn from Flip and you build continuity in the program, meanwhile you address your immediate needs. Not sure how long Flip wants to keep coaching, but it could be a very effective 5-7 year run that sets up the program for success.

For the rest of the staff, I think combining the Villa 7 and NBA connections gives you the best of both worlds. Recruits should be excited to work with guys who knows what it takes to get to the next level. Energetic young assistants know the college game, recruiting and relate well to the players. Flip would be crazy not to leverage the connections that Teague and Ellis have built.

Could be totally off base here, but this way you don't have to take a chance on elevating an untested assistant. You get to see in person if that person is ready while Flip keeps the program moving forward in the short term.

Isn't speculation fun?

If we go this route, then I hope that Flip does let Teague and Ellis suggest at least Villa 7 guy. Flip could really use a high-energy recruiter on his staff since that is likely the thing he would need the most help with. Flip would be good enough recruiting the in-state guys, but someone with the energy and charisma to go out nationally and have connections in different parts of the country would be great. Flip's name doesn't carry much weight in other parts of the country

JR Rider and Stephan Marbury are available as bench coaches.

Whether or not that's the conscious plan, it could very well be how it plays out. Or at least one can hope.

Last time I saw Steph I thought he was going blow his brains out on JTV while eating a jar of vasoline (seriously), JR could bring some road dogs with him.
