Assuming that Jerry Kill and his staff are working for free.
And assuming that gopher ticket prices are 60 dollars.
The gophers would have had to sell and extra 83,334 tickets to pay for the 5 million dollar difference in salary from 5 million to free.
The gophers have to average 11,904 more fans per game to have had extra ticket sales pay for the 5 million dollar difference.
Meaning, if hiring Mullen meant selling out all 7 games at TCF next fall, averaging 38,000 fans would mean the gophers would be losing money compared to what Mullen brought even if Kill and his staff were working for free.

What is worse.
Assuming Kill and his staff are combining to make 1 million dollars, averaging 41 thousand fans would have been breaking even with giving Mullen and a staff 5 million dollars.

Assuming Kill and his staff are making 1.5 million dollars, the gophers would have to average 42,472 in ticket sales to match the revenue that bringing in a coach and staff that would sell out the stadium (assuming said coach and staff are making 5 million per year).

If the gophers go somewhere between 5-7 and 7-5 next year, what is the avg attendance at gopher football games next year. I would think that it would be right around 40,000. Because regardless of how good of a coach Kill may be, he is not going to sell tickets early.

Though if he wins, the University will make big money longterm. Because if he gets to the point where he is selling out the stadium, then obviously the profit margin is much higher.

I'm sorry. I am not prepared for an essay math test.

Anyone, is there anyone (besides Leach) that would sell out a stadium for 5 million dollars for coach and staff? In the whole country?

$5 mil for a guaranteed 5-years is also a ton. Clemson, widely considered a top 15 to 20 job, and certainly nuts about football, spends $4 mil. yearly on its entire football staff.

Heard Mike Stoops also made some ridiculous demands early. Why not ask for the world? Those guys weren't desperate to get out. Kill knew that this was likely his one good shot to hit the jackpot. Any other schools call on him? Would they next offseason? Strike when the iron is hot when you can triple your salary.

That is true. Spending 5 million on staff would be a huge jump in the way of doing things at the U of M.
But that doesn't take away from the fact that if Kill and Staff are working for free next year and the team averages 37,000 in paid attendance, the U of M would have actually made more money by hiring Mullen and staff for 5 million (assuming Mullen sold the thing out).

Any word on what Kill's salary (and staff) will be?

Should sell out three games for sure next year: Wis., Iowa, and Neb.

Not yet. But it's all public information. Will request his entire contract as soon as its available, including all the nice perks he'll get.

That is a very good point actually. Unless the season ticket base completely implodes, it would be tough to get below that average of 37,000.
If those 3 games sold out, the other 4 games would have to average only about 26,600 to get to 37,000 for the year.
I don't know what the numbers currently are, but I imagine season ticket holders alone are greater than that number right now.
I wonder what the renewal rate will be. They should have made the renewal deadline last week HA.

Although, the Iowa game didn't sell out will the week of the game this year. If Iowa is a 6-6 type of team next year and MN is no better than them, it may not sell out.

2012 better be a winner with all 3 of those teams on the road the next year, or the school will lose a ton of potential income.

It's not just ticket sales, it's TV's turned on, concessions at the game, jerseys, hats, t shirts, etc. I also think it's about sending a message to the Gopher fanbase (nation, country, whatever) that "We're serious about competing for championships". I got the exact opposite message today. TCF Bank Stadium will only be new once, the locker room will only be amazing until 15-20 teams match/top it, these advantages will be gone by the time we make our next hire whether that's in 3 years or 15 years.

Correction, TCF Bank Stadium was once new. The bloom was snipped off by The Music Man and his backsliding fiasco this year. We are now the cheerleader who graduated and wonders why no one lets us get by on our perky and optimistic attitude despite our lack of real career skills.

I agree that we would have been in a much more difficult bargaining position with Mullen and Mike Stoops, but I can't fathom how you could argue that this was Kill's one chance at getting a HC position in a BCS conference.

He had a much better trackrecord than Danny Hope (Purdue) before essentially being named the Purdue HC.

-he has had more success than Hoke (who three years after winning a bit at Ball St is being mentioned at Michigan and here).

There aren't many Non-AQ coaches in the country who had as much sustained success as Jerry Kill has over the years (who would consider leaving, so like Nevada's coach doesn't count), so I have a hard time believing this was Kill's one shot.

Possible. But definitely some health concerns, and he isn't getting any younger. If he went 7-5 or 6-6 next year, a BCS school would've come calling? Admittedly my 2011 No. Ill. knowledge is limited, so maybe they have enough returning talent where another 10-2 season is not out of the question.

I think you're right on Doogie. Hoke parlayed a very similar recent MAC record (mediocre seasons followed by one really good one) in to a job in the Mountain West. Kill somehow got a job in the Big Ten... and not at Indiana. Would Brian Kelly have gotten the Notre Dame job if it opened this year instead of last year? Unlikely. Kill wouldn't get another offer if he's back to close to .500 for the 3rd out of 4 years in D1 next year. His window could open again after another 10 win season, but it would have needed to come farily quickly given his age.

With his track record there is really no reason to assume that there would be drop off next season if he had stuck around Northern Illinois. I didn't really know a ton about their team until this last week because I looked up a ton on Kill and they will have a pretty big portion of their team back next season (their QB, 3 top WRs, some good young RBs to help replace Spann, a lot of their defense). But most importantly he's had consistant success everywhere he has been, so that would be the trend that should be assumed would have continued at Northern Illinois.

I agree that his window probably wasn't going to be open forever, but the guy had quite a bit more success than Brady Hoke. Hoke wasn't that far from being fired at Ball State and their respective winning percentages aren't very similar, Kill has had much more success.
