How does Kill finish up this recruiting class?

Given his offer list I am actually a little surprised to see that we have not offered him considering most of the schools that have are in the class of those we go head to head with quite a bit. Then again you never really know how accurate any of that stuff is. Rivals seems pretty good but they make plenty of mistakes as well.

He'll get an offer when he shows up on 1/25.

With grades & skills, he is worth leaving a spot open. If they don't sign him, can that scholly go to a walk-On then?

It has to be tough to get a high caliber kid from the Sunshine State if another SEC school comes calling. Kill & company must do their magic and convince him to go north and be a stand out and have more playing time instead of being buried in back of the depth chart.

Anyone heard official word on Hinojosa...
I heard that there is still some questions about him really being part of the team. I don't want to discredit his dad or him, but I've heard people from GI say things like they still doubt he ever becomes part of the team. I hope he's part of the team.

Salzewedel....chances that he becomes a DT? He was 6'6" 235 going into his SR season, so he could easily be around 245 -255 lbs before stepping on campus.
Tedric Thompson - I think of him more as an OLB recruit. I think he'd be one of the LBers.

Some of the other positions, it depends upon what we hear in the next couple weeks as far as attrition goes, but I agree with JG, I'd look for more LBers, another Wr, and possibly another DB.

I wouldn't be surprised if we took another RB too. I think the staff is correct in acknowledging that our biggest area of concern is with our position players, we need more skill players.

His dad just posted on a different thread today, and said his plane arrives in Minneapolis tomorrow afternoon.

We're at 15 commits right now with Dixon on board. I like our chances of landing Thompson and Wolitarsky. It looks like the remaining 2-3 scholarships will go to the best available players, who IMO right now would be between West, Spearman, Riley, Smith, Wozniak, or Webb.

I agree. The Daily Gopher seems to think Myrick might be an academic risk, he's planned a visit to MTSU, I'm guessing as a fall back option. I think Thompson and Wolitarsky are the most likely to commit, followed by West and Webb. Riley, Spearman, and Smith seem like longer shots. I think we might run out of room for Wozniak, but we seem to be in his final 3. Really hard to say how many scholarships will be available.

Nevermind, just saw the date.

We still need to add some DB's to this class. I wonder if Thompson and possibly someone else are silent verbals? Any chance Webb is being recruited as a CB? It seems that the staff should be targeting more DBs with Carter and Stoudemire graduating plus 3 seniors next year, but they seem content.

I thought they should too, but I guess with moving Wells to corner they aren't too worried. I'm guessing they focus hard on that next year, like they did with LBs this year. Thompson's recruitment has been unusual, they kept pushing back his visit date, not sure why. It's been hard to gauge Kill's interest in him, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a silent verbal. I don't think anyone else is really on the radar other than possibly Arnold and Jones.

They focused pretty hard on it this year too, they just missed on some guys. Hard to predict that Keelon Brookins, Nate Andrews, and Nate Godwin would all decommit. Add those three and we have 4-5 defensive backs instead of 1-2.

I just was saying this in another thread, but I think Thompson ends up at LBer as well. So i'm not sure if he'll end up helping in the defensive backfield.

At 203 he would need a lot more weight for a LB...he looks more like a DB.

Not with Kills scheme. Jack Lynn and James Manuel are both 210, Lamonte Edwards is 212, Coop finished his career at 220. I'd say there's plenty of time to bulk up and play LB in JK's system

Being 200+ lbs as a HS SR, usually translates into a college LBer.

Nick Rallis (HS S), was 6'0" 200 lbs as a SR. By the beginning of last year, he was 220 lbs (OLB).

Jack Lynn was 6'3" and 205 lbs as a SR. Lynn has apparently bulked up a bit according to Kill on Sport's Huddle.

Westerhaus was 205 on Signing Day.
Rayfield Dixon, a 2013 OLB recruit is under 200 lbs (196 lbs).

He certainly could end up at S, but he'd be a pretty big S for us. There aren't too many guys who are athletic enough to play S at 225 lbs +.

Kill/Claeys definitely seem to value speed over size on defense. Question is if that can work in the Big Ten.

Type of offense you face

I think it's less about whether or not it works in the BigTen but does it work against a power type of running team. There is a big difference from the type of offense Northwestern runs vs wisconsin. If i had to play against wisconsin every week I would recruit power and size, if I had to play NW every week I would recruit speed and coverage skills, unfortunatly for coaches they have to play both and try to stop them both with the players they have.

I believe it can work but you gotta be in the right place. You need to find guys who are not just fast but have instincts. We need guys who make plays.

I'm excited what we are building. Year 5 we gotta be pretty good if we can continue our course?

I almost would have put money down on Tedric Thompson being our first verbal this year.

To win in the Big Ten you need LBers who are both fast and big; all across the board. Last year Rallis was puffed up and "bigG but he was slow and probably the worst Big 10 middle LBer I've seen in awhile. Manuel and Cooper both played a lot because we had nobody bigger who was overall better; we just had a bad crop of Lbers on our squad. Cooper had almost no chance when we played big physical lines and Manuel has/will fare the same. We had very poor LBer play last year, and we're almost by default going to have better play next year even though we have plenty of question marks going into the season. I'm excited for Lynn and hope that he can come in and provide a spark.

Lamonte Edwards needs to step up and play to his abilities.

I'm still wondering what Malik Rucker is thinking going to Iowa. He really wants to spend 4-5 years of his life down there? We haven't lost a player to Iowa in over 5 years (Broderick Binns). Plus, as I understand it all of his high school coaches went to the U.

Cooper was small, but our linebackers aren't much different than most teams LBers. We are a bit smaller, but Iowa's biggest LBers was 230, WI will have Boland next year (240ish) and then a couple small LBers.

It's not just MN, it's all of football.

His dad cant stant the U, but I agree that Iowa is not that great of a place. He thought Kill jerked him around early in the recruiting process and then jumped in late...Iowas was on him early and stayed in the game, from what I know...I saw the dad in the fall at some youth FB games

He committed to Iowa in June, how early did he want Kill to offer him?? Seems pretty weird he would think that.

The Gophers offered and received a commitment from Brookins at junior day, and Rucker didn't get an offer until March. It seemed that Iowa made Rucker their #1 priority from the start, and we didn't recruit him that hard right away.

Ferentz offers a lot more scholarships early on than Kill does. Oh well, seems like a really stupid reason to pick Iowa over MN if that was his main reason.

His loss. He'll have to live in Iowa City for the next 5 years and play for a 4-8 team that's getting worse.

Let's not be homers here. If he turns out to be a good player, it could be our loss too, especially considering how few DB commits we've been able to get this year. I think Malik is making a mistake by going there, but I'd still love to have him.

It is easy to make out of state offers early, because if you change your mind you can just stop calling and everyone gets it. But, renegging on an in-state offer is a big deal, so Kill is right to be concerned about offering before he is sure to an in-state kid because it pisses HS coaches off as well as the parents if he changes his mind. I would guess Jk was surprised Iowa offered that early, and in this case it hurt, but it actually may not have made any difference given the Dad's attitude. Holding a 30 year grudge due to a different coaching staff is really stupid, but that's life.
