Hoke's job if he wants it

Let me repeat: it was ONE message from a coach early this evening... doesn't mean at all that Hoke is coming, so please don't mistake what I typed... Twitter can be dangerous, and I get that it's a form of journalism, but I am looser on there than in what I write for 1500espn.com, or even what I say on-air... so willing to post some stuff from just one contact... in most cases, always want the info. from at least two independent sources... We do know 100% that Maturi & Mona chatted with him, and we've heard for weeks that he's being considered... Let's see what transpires.

How many on here bemoaning Hoke's record loved the Brewster hire...one that gave a guy with NO track record the very same head coaching job!
Revisionist history and dime store expertise. Welcome to Gopher Hole! Man up when you criticize a Hoke hire as a possibility and admit you were a Brewster apologist when he was hired.

For what its worth Jason Whitlock told me over twitter that Hoke isn't coming here. I called him a Palanite but he seemed convinced that he isn't coming here. Whitlock is a big ball state guy so he might know some inside info, but since we aren't going for Leach I hope he is wrong.

Has David Letterman chimed in yet?
;)

Whitlock & Hoke are close... I just woke up for radio duties, and have an email saying that while Hoke is in the mix, it's far from a situation where it's flat-out his job if he wants it... and as I stated on Twitter, I am not sure where this Monday press conference rumor stuff started... never once have I heard that.

It's all a game now... negotiations with agents, talking to multiple people, and making each seem to think that they are the guy... if any candidate found out he was choice 3, 4, or 5, he could very well bail... in many ways, the conversations the U/Parker Search Firm is having with agents is super fascinating I bet.

trying to understand this post! when maturi said they are going to "try" for a tubby-like hire does that mean he never said that or he did say that but didnt mean it?

i dont like the hoke hire, its my opinion. if he takes the job and has success i will be the first to say im wrong. but what about my previous post has you so upset that youre to become so worked up to tell me to "grow up" and "give you my tickets?"

thanks for blowing a gasket!

It is because every yahoo on here that knows nothing about how coaching searches work have misquoted Maturi in order to support their point that the new coach is far below what we are capable of getting. The problem is that most people, and I assume you are in this group as well, have in mind a single coach or a group of two or three who they assume we NEED to get and then get pissed when anything else happens. Fullmer and Bellotti might be good coaches, but why were they not hired for any of last year's openings?

I am telling you to grow up because you are bitching about the negativity bug when your negativity could have been eased by A.) Reading what Maturi actually said rather than just focusing on one small sound bite, and B.) Watching a couple San Diego State games to recognize what kind of coach Hoke actually is.

I will freely admit that loud-mouthed irrationality sometimes causes me to get upset.

Hey Doogs - why haven't we heard more about Golden lately? Is it due to lack of interest on his part? If so, I can deal with that, but if he's willing to come for the right pay package, and Maturi isn't making it happen, that's a damn shame. I feel strongly that he will be an elite HC soon, so why not here?

I don't think anyone was calling for Brewster to be hired, he came as a complete surprise. If Brewster's name had come up, it would have been met with criticism. But there is a world of difference between being critical of a coaching candidate before he is hired and being critical of the coach after he is hired.

There just isn't any comparison, it is in no way, shape or form revisionist history. Whoever is hired, I will give him a chance. That's what people did with Brewster, and that's not being an apologist.

Agree... like him... not sure why we haven't heard much w/ him? I wish I had a good Golden source, but I don't... all I know is: he is under consideration... how much interest Maturi has in him, or he has in MN, I don't know.

Exactly. Had I known Brewster was under consideration before he was hired I would have been highly critical/skeptical. However, once he was hired, I got behind him 100% because I wanted him to succeed.

The same goes for Hoke; although he is not my first choice or my second, if he is hired, I will get behind him 100% because I want him to succeed. But that does not mean that before a hire is made I am going to shut my brain off and just accept whatever MACturi shoves down our throat for a HC candidate and not analyze/criticize it.

Also 0-1 vs NDSU....

So much foolish nonsense.
Did the man take a losing program to a winning situation?
Has he done it more than once? Did he get his team into a Bowl Game?
Was there a tremendous improvement in offensive stats and defensive stats to prove that he can bring up performance on both sides of the ball.

Hoke qualifies, and once he has a team playing well, he is not prone to blowout losses like U Conn suffered this year.

Hoke is certainly not the type of hire the U needs at this critical time. However, if none of the studs (Harbaugh, Patterson, Petersen, etc) are interested, what choice do we have? Of the 2nd tier options, I personally prefer Sumlin MUCH more that Hoke but what the hell do I know...I'm just a fan. This is certainly a crucial decision, though...one that will divide this board greatly no matter which 2nd tier guy is hired.

Quick, lets pay a cheap half million so the coach who really wants to come here doesn't wiggle off the line.

1) Not even my top Tier II coach, so I would be disappointed. I admit I don't now whether he can do the job.
2)Doogie-frequently wrong- but never in doubt. Not a top souce for valid info in my mind.

In my book he has won in a weak MAC, that conference is just terrible. What he is doing at San Diego State is more impressive though but I don't think he has beaten a top 25 team at either Ball St or SDSU. I just don't get why people think he is this great hire, his resume is nothing but mediocrity. In his few "standout seasons" his team dominated mediocre competition but lost to every great team they played.

Minnesota can and should do better.
