Hetherman to Rutgers??? Say it ain't so....

there's some real smoke aka tony wrote an article on it and given the two teams are full of inbreeding, someone said yeah there could be interest. if they won't give him a pay raise in today's CFB, they're not going to keep many/any coordinators around

Ryan Burns has been talking/complaining about assistant coaches' salaries for years. and I don't think it's a coincidence that the Gophers keep seeing assistant coaches leave for other "opportunities."

look - in some cases, the coaches who left may have had other reasons than just financial. but if you want to keep good people, at some point you have to pay them what they're worth.

Probably doesn't help that he's originally from Massachusetts.

I can live with the Ohio States of the world outbidding us for coaches and players, but there's no excuse for this university to have a program who at best is one of our peers, be able to buy our assistants.

The positive is he doesn't really have a big connection to Rutgers other than he was there the past two years. Like I'm not sure Rutgers itself is a dream spot or anything for him. So maybe he feels its better to stay at MN for at least a few years to possible get more of a promotion to a better program instead of a lateral move.

Why can Rutgers pay more for coaches?
According to USA Today, the answer may be the same as a lot of big entities. Deficit spending. Rutgers athletics spent $138M in 2023, or a $29M deficit. By far the largest among FBS schools.

This big picture data is sometimes inaccurate and may not reflect things like private contributions, but it is notable how Rutgers is running well into the scarlet while almost every other FBS football program big or small is making a profit or a modest loss.

Real smoke? I see conjecture and a link to his own article talking about the connection with Rutgers. Sure, it could happen, but this isn't smoke.

Can you claim something a rumor when you are the one writing the rumor?
No, you cannot if you’re a professional and not trying to burnish your creds/drum up clickbait.

Yup. If PJ is serious about winning he'd throw some of his money at the Coordinators just like Cignetti did at IU.
Did Cignetti do that? He’s making 8 mil per year, how much did he throw to his coordinators? Or is that the ADs decision? They’re paying their coordinators almost as much as OSU is paying theirs. We have to up our game, and it isn’t suffering due to Fleck being overpaid.

While I personally would love it, I can already hear the DEI talk being spewed regarding his hire.
I've seen that talked about with 1 hire in the history of this board and that was with Ben Johnson.

Literally no one would argue that hiring Winston would be a DEI hire. Literally no one thought it was a DEI hire when Winston was hired as a DL coach.

We get it, you feel stupid that people pointed to the Ben Johnson hire and made the rationale realization that he was hired for 1 reason and you have egg on your face over all of that.

That does not mean anything thinks every minority person hired is a DEI hire and it's insulting to deserving candidates that you would even bring it up.

It's not PJ's job to reach into his own pocket, the U needs to decide if they want to be serious about competing or not.
A Head Coach's contract includes the money allocated to the Assistant coaches. If as the HC you dont feel the staff is being paid enough, I'd think you negotiate and get them more or you dont sign the contract if you really want to take care of your guys.

Bwaha ha ha!

Go back and read threads from when Kim Royston's dad used to post here and get back to me.

Heck, you don't even need to go back that far. Look up Lindsey Whalen.

Thought I heard that staff salary pool increase was something that he was adamant about being included in the deal.
