National University holds off on name change after reports of T. Denny Sanford pornograpy investigation ​

A plan to rename National University after La Jolla billionaire and mega-donor T. Denny Sanford has been put on hold following news reports that he was the subject of a South Dakota child pornography investigation.

Sanford, a prominent philanthropist globally and in San Diego, where he lives part time, had given $350 million last fall to La Jolla-based National University.

“In light of recent developments, for the foreseeable future, National University will continue under its existing name,” the National University System said in a statement. “The board of National University will continue to follow this matter closely.”

The university declined to answer further questions.

Wow....well if the stuff in the investigation turns out to be true then the U will have dodged a major bullet by not being connected to Sanford.

According to the story, not many details available and no charges to this point. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

If I remember correctly, Sanford was asking for too much in return.

He also wanted to stretch out his contribution over 20 some (?)years. He was going through a divorce to, with allegations of hiding assets.

If you take race out of the equation, if the field was named after anyone, it would be
Bruce Smith, the lone Heisman winner.

It is a very tough call. There are so many things that go into selections like this. Bruce Smith would be a great call as would Nagurski. The thing about being a Heisman winner is you are on a list of elite athletes, it isn't necessarily unique. Sandy was the first Black QB to win a National title IIRC at what is now an FBS school. Much like Jack Trice has a unique story. Camp Randall is unique in that it also has historical significance.

Anyway, It's kind of a moot point because of the need for cash. That most likely means corporate sponsors.
