Shooter Now: It's basketball-mania at Howard Pulley league

The Howard Pulley pro-am summer league began another season Monday evening at the Salvation Army gym in St. Paul, and, as usual, it turned out to be a convention for basketball junkies.
Spectators included Greg Cobbs, father of incoming Gophers point guard Justin Cobbs from Torrance, Calif.; John Calcaterra, whose 6-foot-10, 235-pound son Chad of Cloquet High has been offered a tender by the Gophers; Don Zierden, the former Minnesota Lynx coach who recently accepted an assistant job with Flip Saunders' Washington Wizards and whose son, Isaiah, is a prep star at Benilde-St. Margaret's; Terry Kunze, the former Gophers standout and area coach; Errol Carlstrom and Tony Yazbeck, both of whom know every young talent who comes along; and Renee Pulley, who brings it all together.
Greg Cobbs, in town to watch Justin play in the pro-am, said the 6-2, 187-pounder from Bishop Montgomery High had verbally committed to Tim Floyd at Southern California after his sophomore season.
"But that (relationship) deteriorated, and we parted ways; it was mutual," Greg said.
Cobbs, who averaged 23.2 points last season, also considered offers from Washington, Washington State and San Diego State.
"Then (Gophers coach) Tubby (Smith) called and said, 'Why don't you come up and give us a shot?' " Greg said. "When coach Smith calls, it's kind of hard to turn him down. We came up to Minnesota out of respect for coach Smith, and him and his whole staff and the players just blew us away. They were so genuine. The chemistry on the team is great.
"And the people up here were so nice, truly nice. I know when you go on a recruiting trip, everybody's nice to you. But the people in Minnesota were sincerely nice and friendly."
Cobbs' father said it didn't hurt that the Gophers have 6-11 Ralph Sampson III and 6-10 Colton Iverson.
"Where can you go where you have 6-11 and 6-10 freshmen (now incoming sophomores), and it looks like those bigs are going to be here for at least three years?" Greg said.
