I couldn't even give this one a title, there are so many great quotes, from Joey King saying the 1st half was about the worst he's ever played, to DeAndre talking about the trust Pitino has, to Pitino calling Amelia a hipster. Enjoy!
Elliott Eliason
We're just really happy, happy to keep playing basketball, we love to play thus game.
On the last trip to the NIT Final Four - The 1st day, it's easy to get up, the 2nd day, it's harder. Need to keep that going
On rebounding from being disappointed they didn't make the NCAA's - Winning changes everything, we're disappeared we didn't get in
On their rebounding strategy - We tried to keep them off the glass, but we probably didn't do a good job, but got the W.
Mo Walker:
On the best part of NYC - The atmosphere, we stayed tight in Times Square, great environment in The Garden
Coach said they were a great rebounding team, we had to box out, we just needed to do that
On Austin - It's great for him to get a good night like tonight. We love Austin, he's a clown at heart, but when it's time to be serious he puts on his hardhat and goes to work.
Deandre Mathieu:
We don't have a choice, we're going to win the NIT. We're going to build off of this
On Pitino leaving him in with 3-4 fouls - I think he knows that we have to win these games, I tell him, I'm not going to foul again and he trusts me.
We played empire, it was coaches idea he played us yesterday in practice
Definitive prefer to go to the NCAA younger because that's where you want to be
Joey King:
Coach has talked about going home, it will be nice for them to have their families come to the game
I'm not the dancing type, I sat back and watched. Everybody has for their moves except for me
On recovering from starting 1-6 - At halftime, I said that was one if the worst hands I could play. I kind if erased it and came out firing in the 2nd half.
On Pitino not losing confidence - I've been playing well lately, so he said stay focused, rebound the ball play hard and we should come out w a win
They had 9 off boards, but the good thing was that Austin's shot was dropping
Austin Hollins
On if it's sunk it it's his last game - Not yet, it hasn't sunk in yet
On if he's going to shoot around one more time here to say goodbye - I don't know, I think that was the best way to say goodbye. It's just been a great experience
It's tough for a coach to come in and take over a team like he did.
On this being the loudest celebration the media has heard - Just wait until you guys walk out.
On ESPN getting him confused with Andre - Same old, it happens all the time, I'm used to it now.*
Richard Pitino:
• A great win for us, I think the goal, we've talked about it all the time is to be in the NCAA tourney. But the great thing about our team, is that they're really enjoying this. Playing with passion, playing with pride. They don't want their seniors to walk off this court with a losss, and they understand the growth of this program. Austin Hollins was unbelievable tonight, and he just deserves success.
• Sid: You did a heck of a job getting those guys back after the WI game. Pitino: Not only did we understand that we'd win no game if we played that kind of D, if we committed to not being the last team in the tourney, but getting a good seed. There was an understanding that you will not win that way.
• On NYC and going home - growing up, we'd always go to NYC in the summers, and we'd spend time together as family. My roots are really there. My mother is excited, she just wants any excuse to get back to New York, my brother lives downtown there, aunts and uncles, etc. We're going to play in the Garden next year, but there's something about earning a spot to get there.
• Pitino to Amelia: Why are you wearing headphones?
Amelia - Because I was transcribing before this.
Pitino: Is this a new deal? You're such a hipster.
• On Austin Hollin's slump - He just kept going with it, he played, he went on the road and he was just awful, he comes back the next day in practice. He could have easily tried to hide, and he was the loudest and most vocal guy, he's getting out of it, and that's the way it should be. He's the kind of guy that deserves success. I think we're going to miss him, he's 1000 point scorer, but just the intangible part of it. You know he's always going bring it, he's always going to positive, he maximizes his potential on every single drill. He does a lot of things besides shooting the ball. He's a great leader, defensively he's very good, he gets a lot of steals, he's a calming influence in huddles, those are things that you don't coach, that's his up brining and his family.
• What I'd like to see more than anything, these guys have gotten better, with the exception of Andre - I don't know if it's his injury, or mental. Mav didn't play, but he kept working hard. He saw the big picture, now he's playing well and wants to keep playing. Joey King is like Austin in the work ethic category. The guys who are going to be here next year, you want to end on a good note, just like with the seniors.
• On losing in the finals of the NIT: I don't know if the defeat bothers them as much as the great experience that they had. They were excited, I didn't have to generate that enthusiasm. I knew getting to New York was something they were excited about.
• The NIT has really improved as a tourney, it's not our goal to make the NIT, but to build at a high level . I'm putting in a new stamp and culture, to get to 23 wins, and have the opportunity to play at the Garden, and win.
• On Mathieu - I did take him aside before the game, the story is pretty interesting. The credit goes to DeAndre, not the blame going to (Donnie) Tyndall, he probably wasn't a good enough player. He's mature enough, I didn't think it was an issue during the game, I told him to not make this about yourself and make it about the game, and he did.
• My Dad was a HC of the Knicks, an assistant there, had some bad moments when he was with the Celtics. There's no better place to play.
