Gray

For those calling for him to benched in favor of Shortell, do you think Brewster was correct in starting Weber over him the last two years?

I don't think Gray should be benched, but only because I don't think Shortell gives us any better chance to win right now. Gray gives us a better chance this year and next as he's more dynamic. While I thought Weber was a scourge on our team and the worst qb in terms of moxy I can recall us playing, I can't argue with what Brew did. First, he was the coach, so it was his call. I didn't see them both in practice every day. I've always said, you have to beleive the coaches would plathe kid they thought would give them the best chance to win and get the coaches an extension. I think Shortell has a chance to be good, and I think Gray can still improve. The good news is there is no pressure this year on the coaches to win, so they can experiment all they want. We just lost to the 2nd worst team in FBS. Coaches and players now have 10 more games, the spring game and the preseason next year to determine who should be playing.

The best QB on any losing team is always the back up QB. We made too many mistakes today and we lost.

Can we review...dropped passes, interceptions, poor reads by both QBs, poor passes by both QBs, O line and D line played poorly, can't pressure their QB while rushing 4, penalties.

Guess what...Kill told you all that this is what this team had...and we would not be good this year...did you think he was lying? I have faith the Coach Kill will get this team better, and we will get better next year...and we will be much better in three years...this is what Kill said and I believe him...other than that...stop trying to be the Coach...cuz you aint!

Real quick can someone tell me last time a pocket passer won a national championship?

Described by some sources as a "proto-typical pocket passer", Greg McElroy led the Crimson Tide to a 14-0 record and National Title in 2009.
Before that, probably 2004 with Carson Palmer at USC.

Get well Coach Kill. You are in our prayers.

I wish they would call for some short passes up the middle and screen passes more often. It seems like most of the time Gray was throwing on out routes or medium-long passes. He also needs to check down to the RB more often though. There were a few times that Bennett was wide open after releasing from the line.

defending gray

This is not the game I would select to defend Gray's QB skills. If the coach is set on Gray then at least install the a triple wing.

They didn't lose this game because of QB play, they lost this game because the defense stunk up the place and because their offensive line couldn't open any holes for the running game. I'm fine with them sticking with Gray at QB, I thought he played better as the game went on.

Gray does not have the passing touch of Shortell. Move gray to wr and give shortell the team.

what a joke gopher fans

Im sorry, but gray at qb scored points, 21of them. shortell
= 0. A quarter of shortell was a couple nice passes and the same huge misses people are jumping on gray for. The o-line is not good, and the wr outside of mcknight get 0 space. We have a lot of work to do, and I really don't think the qb is the first spot. Not picking up any of the 3rd/4th and shortages points us at the actual problem.

Look at the scoring.g drive stats people.... How did we even get in the red zone? Hint, it involves #5's legs.

Gray's played about how I expected he'd play this season. Fantastic running threat, instinct is to tuck & run, good, not great arm, can't beat single coverage as a passer & still a little overwhelmed with conducting the entire production. I think we keep going with things the way they are though because you can't move Gray to WR (even if you wanted to) because if Shortell gets hurt we begin the Tom Parish era. Gray needs those QB reps & has done nothing to lose the job per se. So, if you can't move him away from QB, do you bench him? I think you lose Gray forever if you do that. I think we have to start Gray & bring Shortell in later for a couple series & see who's got the hot hand & that's just how our routine will be.

Shortell wasn't perfect today but he played "good" I'd say. McKnight dropped a slant that would have been a TD. Jones dropped one in the right flat. Keise dropped a 3rd down to the left side. Those things happen in football but for him to get 3 dropped passes (off the top of my head, may have been one more?) in his one 1/4 at QB is bad luck, not bad QB'ing. He also had a nice QB draw on his 1st of 2nd play which I thought was a great playcall, but also a great run, showing again he is athletic enough to keep 'em honest. The thing I like most about him thought is he just seems to completely understand the game management aspect, down/distance, play clock, score, what personnel he has in the game, etc. That part never scares me with Shortell, but it does scare me a bit with Q.

It appeared that the game plan was to get Gray experience, and a greater sense of comfort, throwing the ball...almost at all costs. Where was the running game? Yes, we had 181 yards on the ground, but do you know how many of those yards were from RB production? 36 yards!!! That is a ridiculous total vs. a team like NM State. I was not impressed with the O-line today, but in my estimation, we really never gave the running game a chance...tough to figure out.

That is the thing that is most disappointing to so far. The running game and the O-line has been awfull. I think the first and goal from the 2 against New Mexico State and you can't just punch it in says alot. Not sure what you can do if that is the case. I am afraid that without Gray's ability to run this team is in big trouble.

Let's take a breather on the Gray situation here.

Denard Robinson finishes his game and people are ready to call the Heisman committee right now. He finished with a 46% completion percentage. He had a bunch of really bad, high passes, and some really bad passes that the WR's adjusted to that made him look good. He ran 16 times with a 6.8 yards per carry average. Q finished with a completion percentage of 50% and 17 carries for an average of 6.6 yards. Q was not the reason we lost this game, and I expect Max to get some reps (for a variety of reasons). Just get used to seeing Q as the staring QB and getting the majority of the snaps. And also expect him to grow as a QB for the next 2 years.

Take a deep breath.

I wish they would call for some short passes up the middle and screen passes more often. It seems like most of the time Gray was throwing on out routes or medium-long passes. He also needs to check down to the RB more often though. There were a few times that Bennett was wide open after releasing from the line.

This was my thought as well. Aren't such plays at least partially 'keep the defense honest' plays when stacking the box? As such don't they also help out the offensive line?

I think they should move the pocket so Gray can move laterally and decide to hit a reciever who is flowing with him or run. I do not think Gray will ever be a good pocket passer, he needs to be on the move.

Shortell didn't look great, they drove the ball on the first drive he was in then went three and out for three straight series, and no they weren't because of dropped passes. He was off on those last three series, he is a better passer but I think you lose some competiveness, and definately the running. I think the coaching staff could have put Shortell in after the first quarter but they did it when Gray was starting to click, I can't help but think it killed some momentum the Gophers had going in at half time.

Real quick can someone tell me last time a pocket passer won a national championship? Pocket passers get paid in the NFL. College is all about the qb's who can exploit the weaknesses of the defense and make them pay with their legs when plays break down.

2009 - Alabama
2007 - LSU
2004 - USC
2002 - Ohio State
2001 - Miami

5 of the last 10, so I guess you're only 50% wrong.

Brewster did not make a mistake by starting Weber - I think he was the better QB at that time, and the team should have been in a position to win more games.

I do blame Brewster for moving Gray to WR. Yes it was nice to have his talent on the field, but now the team is paying the price. That was one of many issues Brewster had - he had no long term vision or plan. He'd be in the same boat as Kill now if he was still here.

And while I believe Coach Kill is the right coach for this team, I think he made a mistake moving Gray back to QB. Gray's inexperience at the position has been a liability, as has his fumbling. I stated after the Spring Game that I thought the team might have been better with Alipate at QB and Gray as WR. Obviously Alipate is out of the equation due to his lack of effort, but I think the same concept, with Shortell as starting QB, Gray as WR, and Parrish as QB2 makes sense now.

I absolutely believe if Gray is not the starting QB, he should be WR or backup QB, not both. There isn't enough practice time to try to do both.

Did anyone see the difference in pockets when Gray is in vs. Shortell?? Seemed like Shortell has a lot more space and time, especially during that first series...My assumption is they run different blocking scemes? I want Gray to be successful and I think he just needs to run with some swagger...Hes been waiting to be the MAN for 2 years and now it has finally come so BE THE MAN!!

Disappointing parts of the game:

-Not being able to get the first down/score on 4th and short

-Not being able to stop them on 3rd and short

-Drop passes

-Distance our D line is playing away from the ball on short yardage places (especially when they got the ball when we didnt score on 4th down)

-Our zone Defense
