A big, strong athlete that can run a little, but neither has the mechanics, touch or where-with-all to look off receivers and hit open ones in stride. I like Shortell's arm and haven't seen enough of Nelson yet, but I cant wait for the NEW Qb with these current receivers.

337 Yards Passing and rushing. 57% completion rate. 2 TDs 1 tipped INT. (when he locked in on a receiver). Some bad throws, many good throws. 1 alligator arm play that should have been caught, 1 freshman WR giving up on a route or reading the wrong route. I'll take that all year.

Of course! the unproven backup QB is a lot better!

You forgot the 147 passer rating...

Did Gray seem a little slower to you guys tonite or was it just me?

BTW I though he was horrendous tonite.

Yeah, he was kinda horrendous tonight, especially with those missed wide open receivers. But he came through when needed and pulled out the win. Gotta give to ya Chapel.

I'm re-watching the game now. I'll let you know if a few hours.

I totally thought he looked slower tonight then he did last season. He still looks very good as a runner but he didn't look explosive at all like he did at times last season.

His stat line for the game looks good from a yardage standpoint but anyone watching the game has to agree that he was just OK tonight. He missed on a number of easy throws that could have turned this game into the route it should have been instead of the nail biter it became.

He did seem bad due to all the missed opportunities. Those missed opportunities stick out a lot more, because if we hit on those, we win in regulation...no doubt, Gray needs to get a lot better at throwing the deep ball, and needs to improve his thought process on the read-options, but he hit players for 15+ yarders multiple times tonight. Those missed opportunities are what made him seem awful...and those were some awful mistakes, but he made a lot of good plays with true freshman and sophomores being his main targets, as well as something called AJ Barker.

While it would've been nice if Gray actually connected with open WRs tonight (who were on their way to the endzone), Gray actually had a decent game statistically despite those glaring issues. Hopefully, those missed opportunities motivate him further.

Note that he would have had a monster game had he just connected with 2 of those open WRs.

There was a play in the 4th or late 3rd where I was shocked that he didn't get around a big Dlineman for UNLV.

Gray was fine tonight.

He wasn't as good as his stat line and I think it's weird that some people are saying he was horrendous and/or calling for his head. If he connects on that one McDonald play, people would have been praising him endlessly. He really had two poor plays (the INT and the McDonald throw). Other than that, he was accurate and by far our biggest offensive threat.

17/30 269 yds 9.0 ypg 2 td 1 int

without missing wide open receivers, could have looked like..

22/28 390 yds 21.0 ypg 4 td 1 int

and a likely 38-3 win.

a win is a win.... but an impressive win over an inept football team would've looked better.

Motivation isn't the issue. The issue is that he hasn't been able to correct the same problems that he's always had. His fundamentals and accuracy are really poor, and he has a hard time hitting a moving receiver at more than 10 yards deep. Most of his completions are underneath or stationary targets, i.e. the easy stuff.

I like Gray. He seems like a great leader, and I think he should be given a ton of rope this season, but this is really worrisome.

And yes, he did look less explosive. Could have been the heat.

Thank you, I was beginning to think I watched a different game.

He was what we thought he was? I personally thought he would be one of our best players. He missed receivers an unacceptable amount....many times by several yards. Not missing out on one or two touchdowns due to poor passes, but more like four or five. This is a huge concern. It has only been one game, so I am trying to not look too much into it.

On the bright side, I am not sure I saw any receivers dropping easy passes. In fact.....I saw plenty of good plays tonight by the receivers. I am way less worried about the depth here.

Am I missing something, what was the second TD that was wide open that he missed on?

Gray was not what I thought he was, especially compared to what I saw in the fall scrimmage. But, that's a scrimmage and not a game. He seemed to be really gun-shy throwing the ball, like he was scared of turning it over. It only got worse after the pic when he stared down the receiver. How many long passes/td's did he miss tonight? 2 to Fruechte, 1 to McDonald and the one to Rabe on the first drive? Coulda/shoulda whomped UNLV

At the end of the day, we get the "W." In a very similar fashion to our last OT victory that came against Syracuse - pick off in the end-zone to seal/set-up the win. Here's to another 7-0 start?!

Bob-I thought on the play you were referring to Gray too a terrible angle and should have tried to outrun the Dlineman to the sidelines. Also on that play, one of the Olineman had given up on the play and couldn't get back in it in time to clear the path for MarQueis.

A lot of the open deep balls were open in part because Gray faked a QB run. That fake won't be nearly as believable with Shortell at QB which makes you wonder whether those same plays would be open with a less mobile QB.

Gray just doesn't look comfortable throwing the football to me, he appears to aim the ball and lacks touch on almost all routes. That said, I think he's still arguably the Gophers best football player and made every throw he needed to in OT.

Certainly not the break out game many were hoping for, and in all honesty it provided a reality check for those who where expecting RG3 to walk out onto the field this year. Still, Q will get better from week to week just like last year. He looked very tentative at times tonight, I'm pretty sure that INT right away shook his confidence.

If we're thinking of the same play, the D player had a great angle on him, he gave him a jab step inside, he didn't bite. Well played defensively.

Rabe on 1st drive, under pressure in 4th quarter if he would of put a little touch on it might have been a td, another time wide open receiver again no touch

Agreed. I think he floated (over threw) the ball on all 4 missed passes, right? Maybe that'll correct itself as he calms down during the season (fingers crossed).

He really had two poor plays (the INT and the McDonald throw).

I re-watched that play about 4 times, and I think either McDonald gave up on the play, or thought it might be a different route. McDonald slowed up, no question. Someone in the chat room mentioned that he saw a coach run right up to Andre right after that play. I think if he runs through the route he has an easy walk in.

If Gray makes an NFL roster next year (I personally think he has a good shot) what position does everyone think he is best suited for?

Andre was so open however, Q with a little patience and savy, could have lollypopped him a ball and still completed it.

It's not that you watched a different game, you were just incredibly quick to rush to judgment.

After you posted this thread (Stoud fumble), Gray went 7-10 140 yards 2 TD and he ran for 37 yards, and leading us to 5 scores in 6 possesions. After the Stoud fumble, he was damn near perfect.

He was bad before the fumble and he deserves some blame for that, but he also deserves some praise for playing well to finish the game.

Seriously? He threw it to the spot a receiver should have been. McDonald did not get there. It looks egregious on the first replay. But watch him slow down, and the space is not that great.
