Gophers target: Morehead State PG Ta'Lon Cooper (5.9 APG)

Another possibility with this whole Cooper thing is that they originally had a date scheduled for his visit and that was public. But as things evolved with visits and priorities, both parties moved things around to get him in sooner.

yeah thats true
i mean Garcia & Battle will both be pushing that mid 30's minutes.
But Fox? i dont think he gets 30 minutes a game....or whomever is the other front court starter
I would guess our priority PG we are after will get that 30 point range.
The other wing spot? i dont think that spot gets 30 mintues a game either

but maybe thats me more wishful thinking in that i truly believe that Henley/Payne/Carrington will all be able to provide us with at least something as true freshman

and maybe some of it is wishful thinking in the idea that i dont want to watch 5-6 guys getting all the minutes every game like we did last year and then clearly just running out of gas both as the season went on and as each game went on
Many, if not most, of the better programs play 6-7 guys the bulk of minutes with an 8th getting some. I don't know if it was Tubby and his lines of players, or that we are in an NBA town, but where did people get this idea that we need 8-10 player rotations. It will be interesting to see how Ben plays it, but I doubt we see more than 8 guys getting minutes.

While that is possible, these visits aren't like driving across town, or even a few hours, to a job interview. They require scheduling of flights, picks ups, possibly hotel reservations, and other arrangements.

I mean, we have a recruiting staff dedicated to do exactly the tasks you're laying out. So if they wanted to make it happen, they could. If a recruit doesn't do an interview or post on socials about their visit dates, we really wouldn't get that information. And the staff could very well keep any changes quiet as they wouldn't want to impact other potential visitors. All I'm saying is that when Cooper commits in 10 minutes, it wouldn't be a shock to find out he has already been on campus.

I wonder if the date for later was some sort of smoke screen to throw other schools off and maybe the visit already happened

Maybe so. There is a chance he lays out how it all went down when he does his commitment interviews with RJ or Marcus. But I'd guess that maybe the staff moved him up their list and then found out that the interest was mutual and told Cooper that it would be best to get him on campus sooner.

With the portal you never really know but I think the best thing about this class thus far is we should have this team for a few years. Dawson/Battle/Cooper/TT/Thiam/Freshman all have 2+ years left. Assuming you pick up 2 more guys that are in their last year to make room for guys in 2023 and that is a nice thing to look forward too with that B1G tournament coming here!

Ihnen has 2 left as well, I believe.

Congratulations Ben Johnson! This isn't just one that "fell in our lap" and it was a tremendous necessity.

Two more guards and we're done. There's plenty of them left.

Yes, but typically not for the entire season if they have any depth. In post season and critical games, yes.

Cooper is a good get. He should be an ok starter. They still need more depth in the backcourt.

He was already a starter on a quality mid-major team and was 7th in the country is assists. I think he should be more than "ok". Out of the PG options we had, I'd think he had to be #1 for a lot of people.

how does the saying go? Play 8 trust 7?

Plus, he was first-team all conference and played 34 minutes a game. Dude has experience (already 3 years of college ball) and size (6'4)

Ta'lon may be overshadowed by Dawson committing, but this is a massive get! He easily would have been the most impactful transfer if he had come in with last year's group—a true pass-first PG from a solid squad in an excellent OVC.

The coaching staff can put pressure on the remaining transfer prospects. What a difference a year makes!
