Gophers Open -2.5 vs Cal Bears

Gophers money line is free money
the free money was being handed out when the Gophers were -79.5 when the game was 49-0 vs Northwestern State. I eagerly bet on the other team.

Anyone who's been a fan of this program knows the Gophers were not going to win by 80, even if they easily could.

I mean, they had a TD called back on an iffy "block in the back" and stalled 4th and 1 at the doorstep of the endzone. If those two plays break differently, you lose.

I heard many people pregame saying there's no way this team covers 45 points, yet here we are.

Watched Cal's highlights against Texas Southern - they looked far more beatable and "human" this week. Their QB looked like a normal freshman. We'll be the much bigger and more physical team. This game is arguably the most important of the season - gives us a huge morale boost, before a bye week, before our B1G stretch starts. If we can lay the hammer on Cal, then it gives us huge energy and confidence heading into our Rutgers revenge game at home after the bye week.
Non conference vs Cal is the "most important of the season?"

Uh, no.

The Cal QB certainly has the physical tools and pedigree, but that being said, he isn’t surrounded by great talent to the point where we should be worried about our legitimate defense getting lit up. If we lose this game it will be because our offense struggled in my opinion. Oregon State and Texas Southern held them to 35 points, if we can’t hold them to under 28 I’d be surprised.

Thought he was technically a red shirt freshman. Yes but pretty easy when Henderson or whoever took a swing pass to the house.
I remember my eyes popping out, thinking their WRs were lightning fast compared to anyone on our team

Big game for our D-Line. Think we easily have the most talented D-Line this kid has faced and if they can get consistent pressure on him he will make true freshman mistakes because he is a true freshman.

He is really talented and if given time to make plays he will.

If we shut down their run game and force the QB to beat us I like our chances because no matter how talented he is, he is still very raw and we have a talented defense. On the flip side, will be interesting to see how Drake handles his first road test. Based on what we have seen from him so far I think he will be fine but you never really know until the lights go on and the crowd starts rocking.

After starting 3-0, Cal lost 4 straight games last year by a total of 9 points. They are likely better than we are giving them. They added a top notch OC in Harsin. Add the late start and we will need a big time game from our entire team.

Not a fan of being favored going in.

Right and he also side-armed a pass 15 yards downfield. Like I'm usually a big "number are numbers" guy but y'all need to watch this dude play. I think there's a world where the Gophers shut him down, but corners are gonna have to hold up in coverage because dude does not stay in the pocket and has a cannon for an 18-year-old.

Week before:
Last week:
Meh. He seems to be fine hitting wide open receivers, especially close to the line of scrimmage. But the first two downfield passes against oregon state probably shouldn't have been thrown - the WR was covered. Just luck that it got completed both times.

I didn't see anything special whatsoever.

I was happy to see Oregon State get thumped again by a non-powerhouse. The way Cal handled the Beavers made me think that Cal might be really good. I also felt better when Cal was not great in Game #2.

Yes, but Oregon State also lost by 9 at home to Fresno State after that game. Fresno State lost to Kansas by 31-7 prior to that game.

I think we’re the better team and should win, but I’m still pretty iffy on our O-line and the ability to run the football. Hopefully they start to gel soon.

Agreed. This year's defense might be better than last year's defense and, if true, that's saying something.

With the exception of the 2019 team, Fleck's successful teams all have had the same identity: a great defense coupled with a methodical offense that normally can be counted on to score somewhere in the twenties. I think this year's offense has the potential to be a bit better than that because the team seems to have more capable receivers than usual.

Exactly, I think most are underrating our defense due to a few new faces. I’m cautiously optimistic that our offense will be better than last year. Seems to be better depth both at WR and RB. Fleck and Harbaugh have completed the shift in developing a better passing attack instead of doing it on the fly like last season. Oline has to gel and Drake may have some hiccups, but at this point he’s experienced enough to be trusted running things.

Right, other than some nice throws on the run I didn’t see a bunch of super impressive passes that wowed me any more than some of the throws Drake has made. I get it, he’s a big fairly mobile guy with a big arm, he’s a five star for those reasons, but so far he’s mostly shown his potential more than actual results.

Gonna be honest that was risky though.
The gophers were 2 touchdowns away from 80
Got stopped on the one and the game ended 6 minutes early

I actually don’t think gophers -79.5 was free money. With the game being called early I bet they don’t pay out the under

I'm a little surprised.

Oregon State was a favorite in Cal's first game and Cal pounded them.

Cal to me doesn't look like any kind of pushover.
Not a pushover but I think that first game was just as much about Oregon St being worse than expected as it is Cal being better. Cal looks better than I expected but think if the Gophers play a pretty clean game, they should win.

In digging into Oregon St's game last week against Fresno, they had 544 yards, 30 1st downs and 37:25 TOP yet still lost 36-27.

Wow! Looks like OSU had 2 turnovers, 10 penalties, and Fresno had 163 yards returning kicks to OSU's 70.

The big issue was the announcers in that first game acting like the kid was the GOAT already in his first start.....it was ridiculous and someone must have gotten in their ears because they toned down the stupidity as the game went on.

Hopefully Anthony Smith is able to introduce himself to the kid early in the game and make it clear that he might have a bright future but he still has a long ways to go.

Oregon State lost their long snapper and that changed the game. They gave up a TD on a bad punt snap and reportedly couldn’t go for PATs and FGs. And with all that they were still winning with a minute and change before giving up a late FG then last second INT return for TD.
