Gophers Open -2.5 vs Cal Bears

I don’t look at or use any betting sites, but I’d tease that up to -10.5. Wonder what the payoff would be then.

I think we take care of them easy.
I also think we will win by over 10 pts.

I think this is a really big game this coming weekend. Other than the game at Colorado a few years ago, when was the last time the Gophers had a road win over a power 4 program that was wasn’t in a bowl game?? I think it has been a while. I know we don’t schedule them frequently, but yeah, I think it has been a while. The point being, a win at Cal on Saturday would be something that doesn’t happen very often. If Minnesota is going to have a 9 or 10 win season when all is said and done, I don’t believe it can happen without a win this weekend. I expect this game to be close, and I think it could go to the final drive. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think it’ll be easy.

Illinois, wisconsin, and UCLA last year.

I thought it was obvious, but I was talking about non-conference road power 4/5 wins. We’ve won plenty in the Big10.
There has only been 1 road P4 out of conference game since Colorado and that was at UNC.

Last one prior to that was at Oregon State in 2017 and that was also a big win.

Yup, same line on Draftkings with an O/U of 44.5. So roughly 24 - 21 type game. 68% of ML bets on MN, but 78% of spread bets on Cal. 83% of O/U bets on the under so that may have moved already from a higher number.

I saw Gophers -4.5 on FanDuel late Saturday night, very quickly moved to -2.5 though. If Gophs become underdogs, a drive south of the border may be in order to get some action down.

I'm a little surprised.

Oregon State was a favorite in Cal's first game and Cal pounded them.

Cal to me doesn't look like any kind of pushover.

This is a very winnable game but I won't be surprised at all if it ends up being a really close game. Both team have young QBs. First big road test for Drake and first really good defense that the Cal QB will face.

If we can make their true freshman QB uncomfortable I like our chances of getting the W. He is talented but he is also just getting his first taste of college football and it is a huge jump from high school.

Agreed but I cannot remember watching another true freshman QB that's that talented. I would be shocked if he's not a round one draft pick in a few years. Gophers corners are going to have to be on their game.

Bold claim after two games against bad opponents, one of which he struggled in.

One of Cals starting linebackers will be suspended for the first half due to a targeting call, so that helps.

He looks and plays like a carbon copy of Michael Penix. Though I will admit that probably 90% of the reason I'm making that comp is that he's also tall and left-handed.

Qb rating was 18.4 last game no passing td’s and a pick. 7 rushing yards against a terrible team. Week one was pretty good though.

I’m so torn on this game.
Insane how similar the stats are. Their first week had some of the most insane throws I’ve seen from a FR QB but last week was not so good.

I’m really torn here. Their QB is talented but I don’t think they’ll be able to run on us so we may be able to get a rush on him. Their defense is also susceptible to the offense we run.

At the same time it’s a LATE road game for a r-FR making their first start. Our pass rush and DBs also haven’t faced a test like this guy yet. If you told me this game was decided by >3 or 3 TDs I’d believe you either way.

Right and he also side-armed a pass 15 yards downfield. Like I'm usually a big "number are numbers" guy but y'all need to watch this dude play. I think there's a world where the Gophers shut him down, but corners are gonna have to hold up in coverage because dude does not stay in the pocket and has a cannon for an 18-year-old.

This is where I'm at. Complete coin flip in my mind. I would believe a Gopher blowout, I would believe a Cal blowout, I would believe a close game.

Watched Cal's highlights against Texas Southern - they looked far more beatable and "human" this week. Their QB looked like a normal freshman. We'll be the much bigger and more physical team. This game is arguably the most important of the season - gives us a huge morale boost, before a bye week, before our B1G stretch starts. If we can lay the hammer on Cal, then it gives us huge energy and confidence heading into our Rutgers revenge game at home after the bye week.

Have you watched them play this year?
I have. I’ve watched as much Cal football as I could the past few years. My son played HS ball with Bastian Swinney, and my wife and I got to know his parents over the years that they played together, so I’ve had an interest in them since he got there.

I believe that we should win, and I don’t think teasing a line to 10.5 equates to a blowout or even a comfortable win, but I do believe we will win by 2+ scores.

Didn't we face freshman CJ Stroud when we opened against OSU? He was pretty good
