Understand what point Kill was trying to make.

My point is more to the fact the DLine was whipped on. The back end of the D is where young guys are playing not up front.
 



Nebraska has better personnel, especially with Pierson-El back, and is much better than their record. Armstrong better than Mitch, though Mitch had a fine passing day. The big problem is that the Gophers can't run this year (second half of Purdue only exception). Last year's team had Maxx, et. al. but was over-hyped, catching Michigan and Nebraska in coaching crises, to win eight. Gophers won't be able to run against Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State or Iowa. So the best chance for a bowl is a win over Illinois in cold weather and a big upset of Wisconsin. In the fifth year of the program, the staff is not competitive in the West, much less the East. Injuries have hurt but we are too dependent on true frosh and red shirts. We just don't have the bodies - and the defense was a step slow today, seemingly not "up" for the game. Both NW and Neb have blown us out.

Actually reminded me of UW and IA. Makes me wonder if beer sales should be restricted to only individuals sporting maroon and gold.

I'm sorry to all of CFB but Nebraska fans being nice is way over rated.
 

One of the following statements must be true:
1) We did not try as hard as we can today;
or 2) when we try as hard as we can, we lose to a 2-4 Nebraska team by 23.

I don't know which one is true, and I don't know which one I would rather be true. We looked terrible today, this was a miserable performance by our team.
 








Our D Line is an absolute goat rodeo.
 



1. I commented on other threads that our defense was suspect after the Ohio game. Our pass rush has been terrible all season, maybe even worse than the QB play. Yet no one is demanding that Winston DeLattiboudere's redshirt be removed or that Cockran and H. Ekpe aren't D-1 ends.
2. Related to #1, Tralund Weber and getting additional high school DE's should be our #1 recruiting priority right now.
3. On the list of 100 things to complain about this season, Demry Croft's burnt redshirt doesn't come close to making the list.
4. This team needs to run the ball to be successful. We won't beat anyone if we rush for 65 yards.
5. We need to win the turnover battle. Our defense has now created 0 turnovers in 4 games: Nebraska, NW, Ohio, and Kent St. Let me say that again: in 4 of our 7 games we haven't created a single turnover. Another sign of a non-existent pass rush.
6. Injuries have been big. We really really missed Cody Poock today.
7. Hopefully we can get Poock, Travis, and Gentry back for Michigan. And Campion.
8. I liked what I saw from Kiante Hardin on his punt return. Hoping that he can lock down that spot.
9. KJ, Carter, Lingen and Drew all had nice games catching the ball.
10. The future is still bright. We're still building depth. The 2015 recruiting class is probably the best we've had, and 2016 looks even better. We replace TCU, Michigan, and OSU with Oregon St., Maryland, and Rutgers next year.
 

Nebraska played great today and laid a beating on us, and the problem was not the offense. Leidner played about as well as I think he can. Eric Carter, Drew, Lingen, and Maye also played really well.

Had the Gophers been able to run the ball successfully on 3-1 twice or at all today (and the Brooks fumble) it would have taken a little pressure off the defense.
 

Why is Croft even being mentioned in this thread? would you have rather the Gophers lost by 40?

My rants:
1. Been a long time since I was this disappointed in Gopher football. I really thought this had the potential to be a special year where we contend for the division.
2. Before the season a co worker set the o/u on wins at 6 and we bet $60 with me taking the over and he the under. I thought it was easy money. Now I'll just be happy with a push.
3. When I think about the price increases coming next year I get sick to my stomach. The non renewals are going to be massive.
4. I haven't even touched on the X's and o's. Nowhere to go but up I guess.

Thanks for the game Minnesota, you guys played great and really appreciate the fair play... no cheap shots. I've been reading your boards for a bit here and wanted to offer a outsiders view of the game. Nebraska has been averaging 10 to 12 penalties per game I believe and were in last or close to it in total penalties per game. Not cheap shot stuff, but improper alignment, false starts, holding... drive killers. Todays game we finally pulled our heads out and only committed 2. It has to hurt to loose any game let alone to a 4 game loser but remember that we were ahead in all of those games with 15 seconds remaining... so theoretically we could be undefeated. Today was the first game all year that the team actually played as a team for 4 quarters with limited mistakes.
I truly believe you'll handle Illinois just as I believe had we played you last week you probably would have beat us as Illinois did.

That "Broken bit's of Chair trophy" is defiantely real now!

Not being able to convert on 3rd and 1 or get third down stops and the Brooks fumble that turned the momentum towards the Nebraska side of the field. Combine that with a good deep punt where there punt return turned on the jets and gave them great field position and they had the Gophers figured out.
Gophers are not a very good football team when they cannot accomplish team goals of establishing the run and stopping the run or creating turnovers. Right now the Gophers do not have a Big 10 level running back, at least not an established one that can beat people on his own. There might not be another W on the schedule and an empty trophy case if some people don't start getting healthy and the overall team play does not improve. Gophers will not be favored in another game the rest of the year.
When the Gophers do create turnovers the Gophers defense has either lacked luck, or is not opportunistic enough to get them. Just to many mistakes being made and not enough pressure to get off the field on third down to beat better teams right now. Might escape with all of those mistakes against lesser teams but not the better ones the Gophers will continue to face the rest of the season. Offense played well at times but once they got ahead they seemed to have a choke hold on time of possession and scoring. Gophers forced only one punt today, just not good enough to get the W.
Getting zero pressure by the defensive line and getting dominated by the Nebraska O-line was disappointing, I knew they had really good defensive front and offensive line play seemed well improved but I still thought the Gophers had a chance to win a close game today. Armstrong had all day to throw and long developing routes or counter action and cutbacks were available all game.
Gophers defensive line got smoked all game long by the Nebraska offensive line, # 96 just kept getting buried by double teams and pushed four yards up the field or to the ground and then they would just sit on him. He seems to be the only player on the defensive front that commands a double team and that says a lot about the play of the others. By far the toughest game I have seen from the defensive tackle standpoint in a long time.
There were really wide splits on the 1 and 3 gaps all game long and the Gophers never adjusted there fronts even when they were not working. Part of the problem is we kept slanting the opposite way of the play call and made it really easy for Nebraska. The defensive back seven seemed disorganized and out of whack the entire game like people didn't know what the call was or where they should be. I was really bummed by the linebacker play, we seemed to not be able to beat blocks and we didn't attack all game.

We got caught on the counter on the first play, just about everyone slid and followed the offensive line on a stunt or a slant the wrong way,(nobody stayed home except one and he had a double to beat) and the safety#11 had a really deep drop like the robber position to try and prevent a deep post with his back turned. When your the last line of defense you cannot just turn your back to the play and not be aware of what is going on, you have to at least take a peak back at the ball.
By the time he saw the running back streaking to the sideline he was to damn far away and to far out of position to be the last line of defense. Just a really disappointing effort by the defense, I get that we were playing inexperienced people and a lot of young guys all over the field, but I did'nt notice to much fire or the emotion that a defense needs to play with in order to have success. Energy was low and I would say the defense seemed down and flat from the first snap. Must have something to do with the injury to Keith in pre-game warm ups in the fact he broke his hand and not having the starting middle linebacker on the field. You could tell there was confusuion, but confusion should not cause poor tackling technique like leaping off your feet, or over running your gap.We slant to many people to the wrong side of the field and the Gophers took themselves out of a lot of play opportunity's. Credit the Cornhuskers they flat out-hustled and thumped the Gophers all game long. I didn't expect them to play as fast and be that far ahead of the Gophers today, but they kicked some Gopher butt. Burn the defensive tape and get back to tackling correctly and filling your gaps and not getting out of your lanes.
Gophers do not have a lot of room for errors or one that has extra depth that they can just plug and play, coaches are going to have to really figure something out or this season could get away from them.
 

Jalen must have been coached to do a run blitz on the motion in that formation?

He left Johnson all alone on that long run in the first quarter.
 

When was the first Nebraska punt?

Defense was terrible. Completely fell apart.

I thought the same thing. We were obviously in man and got torched.
 

Something I have not seen discussed. In garbage time why in the heck is Antonio Johnson returning kicks? The secondary depth is not good and you throw him back there to return a kick? Makes no sense to me.

Really? This is a Sid-like statement. Wisconsin is no more than an average team this year. Beating them would not be a "big upset" IMO. It is about damn time that streak comes to an end.
 

Kill has us on the right track, folks need to calm down. Their recruiting classes are getting better each year. I was concerned about this year. I thought they over-achieved last year and had a very difficult schedule this year.

Going into this year I said 6 wins with 1 over Bucky and I am happy. This is still plausible.

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to blame the RB's for the loss. When 8+ defenders meet them in the backfield, it's hard to expect much. I didn't see you posting last week how terrible our RB's are. I think it's more of an indication of how predictable the O is and how bad poorly our O-line has played rather than RB play. We have 2 Big Ten caliber backs IMO.

Not only have those two blown us out, they've looked pretty damn bad against everyone else. Northwestern was terrible today and Nebraska is headed to a losing record.
