A nice share? One returning player. Ben and staff deserve more than a "nice share".
Well, since Coach J doesn't play defense or make clutch shots, a nice share is fair. Probably a bigger share than any individual, but to think it's all because of him is nuts.

Huh? I think the difference here is that I am not bashing the pick of a guy who's been the athletic director at multiple D1 schools and made this hire.

But please tell me why you, WoodburyTim, and the other bashers are actually more qualified to make the pick and should be hired as the athletic directors. You guys are the ones acting like you are "more knowledgeable about the inner workings of an athletic department" than Coyle.

Or here's a better idea.....shut up and let the guy who was hired to make these decisions do his job.
Well let's be honest, you want the people who disagree with you to shut up. Not those who are disagreeing with Coyle.

I am sure Coyle would agree he not infallible and his decisions open to questioning and disagreement. You are pretending to defend Coyle, but what you are really angry about is people not agreeing with you.
I'm making fun of the keyboard athletic directors like you that think you know what's actually best. People (like you) jumping off a cliff because the guy they wanted didn't get picked. But keep telling us about how you've evaluated some of these coaches REALLY HARD after hearing about them a few weeks ago. Man! Missed some really good ones! lol.
I don't think it is that good of hire, but I also don't who else was in the mix of who else they could get and I haven't suggested otherwise.

I'll admit, I am making fun of you more than Coyle. Your "defense" of him has been much more clumsy than the hire.

@WoodburyTim

Please feel free to eat a big bag of dicks.

Can't even just enjoy the team winning and playing good basketball. Things have to devolve into this every time the team wins. Some people just can't help themselves.

What a great win, winning on the road in the B1G is never easy, especially not in Michigan!! It was a heckuva ride, hoping for many many more like this one!!

GO GOPHERS!!!

Yep, you can never call out assholes.
Remember that everyone.

Ben Johnson had to basically recruit an entire team. And despite a completely undersized front court....he and his coaching staff has managed to concoct a defensive gameplan to stifle front court bulls like Dickenson.

He hired the staff and assembled the roster. Seriously?
Correct. Which is why he deserves a nice share. The lions share even. Are you suggesting it's all on him? For Pete's sake, I'm trying to compliment the job he's doing and you wanna start an argument. I don't get it.

You worded it like a backhanded compliment, may not have ben😉 your intention, but it read that way.

Lion's share is better, thanks for clarifying. Given the situation, he put together the right mix staff and players. That is a huge lift for any successful HC, but pretty amazing for someone doing it all for the first time as HC.

I agree with lion's share. I take away nothing from the players and the great effort they gave for 40 minutes. However, imagine if you will tonight's result if Pitino, Tubby, or Monson were the HC of this team. Yes, there will be setbacks and disappointments this year as the BIG is loaded, but it is a long season and Ben obviously has the team believing in themselves and pointed in the right direction, for sure.

Yes, cause everyone saw this coming 🥴
I'm gonna go way out on a limb and guess that every fan base of every sports team in the history of sports has had fans who were completely wrong about a new hire and ones that were completely correct. It's the nature of the beast, the Gophers certainly aren't the first.

This team has been very fun to watch and early returns are looking good! The portal, whether you agree with it or disagree with it, allows teams to bring in some very very good players that just didn't fit somewhere else or were just plain looking for a new start.

Congrats to Ben and staff and here's hoping they can keep it going!! GO GOPHERS!!!

No, I doubt anyone did. But there were a whole lot of people opining Gabel made the hire because Johnson is black. I remember one post in particular that the hire was all about "optics." No way Johnson could sell himself and his vision.
Dude, at the risk of being argumentative, why can't both be true? It could very well have been a largely diversity hire and still turn out to be a great, great hire, right?

Like, if I marry my wife because she was smoking hot, and she turns out to be a good wife and a good cook, that doesn't mean I didn't marry her mostly because she was smoking hot.

I just want to enjoy this as long as we can! These guys are fun to watch and today was flat out AWESOME!! Great job!!

Gotta suck to be dead wrong about both the MBB and FB coach.

I have been pretty clear that I am making fun of you guys, not the coaches. I said it clearly in what stocker quoted and said it clearly to you as well. Stocker08 may be mentally slow(and if it is medical or psychological I apologize) and has trouble with simple logic and grammar and you admittedly know nothing about football, but are hoping for a romantic relationship with PJ.

I support our coaches and always root for things to work. Whether they win or lose doesn't make stocker08 intelligent or change whatever your weird deal is. Their success or failures isn't going to change your problems.

Since the Tubby years it seems the gophers have overachieved early in the season only to fall apart. If we have a .500 record or even a game under in the month of February I’ll be happy.

Lazy recruiter and has never been a college head coach or even a successful assistant but hey he ticks the boxes demanded by the Star Tribune so at least those people should be happy.
This guy gets raw crow. No fancy schmancy cooked stuff.

Lazy recruiter? That literally is the one thing you couldn’t question Ben Johnson on. Lack of HC experience? Sure. Never really won big as an assistant? Sure. Lazy recruiter is absolutely ridiculous. Keep holding them to the fire USAF

See a lot of victory laps taking place. Just remember that if Ben was 0-9 the doubters would have remained respectful and supportive of the gophers. This thread would definitely not be a cesspool of negativity…

Part of the charm of this board. Win or lose you are gonna get some douchebags on here. More fun when we win though.
