@AmeliaRayno: #Gophers had a sports psychologist come talk to them over the weekend.

@FSNtylermason: The #Gophers basketball team had a sports psychologist visit the players recently. First time this season they've done that.

@jgkfan: Surprised it took Tubby this long to bring sports psychologist Rick Aberman. He worked with the football team all year. #Gophers

Go Gophers!!

So is the sports psychologist going to install a half court offense so that we do not stand around and have one player hold the ball for 30 seconds and also put in a couple of inbounds plays under our basket?

Damn, that's funny. But seriously, if that is the case, I say we fire Saul and put the psychiatrist on the staff ASAP.

I've always found it rather odd that they have to bring in a sports psychologist to build up what the coaches have torn down.

Things that make you go hmmm.

Football team had him all year don't know why the basketball team didn't.

I know Dr. Aberman personally, and from the type of counseling he's told me he does, I'm not sure how talking to the team once would do anything. Maybe a slight placebo effect... who knows. He essentially conducts psychotherapy, which is something done on an individual basis that requires far more than one session. Obviously that's not all that plausible due to financial reasons (although much easier with basketball than football). I would be curious to know what he does for a one-time session meeting with the team. I assume this must have been more of a motivational speech type thing than his usual gig. Hopefully he's around more than just this once--that would be a lot more effective. Smart guy.

A sports psychologist, he has proven his worth. Cut him, bet he can't hit one of three from the three point line or tell you about why he was successful as an athlete. Tubby needs him why? Maybe he has a national championship and an Olympic gold medalist like Tubby. Save your money, spare a headache, stop reading ink blotches from a wannabe.

Maybe the team should bring in priest and have him exercise the demons.

And once the demons are physically fit, he can exorcise them.

Then collect a check. Data, not gurus. I can't believe a coach with a National Championship and Olympic gold medal listens to a sports psychologist who has helped them to this point. Cut bait.

I have taken a sports psychology class during college and found it pretty interesting. I know a lot of teams use sports psychologists quite a bit now and hopefully it will have a good effect on the Gophers tomorrow night and carry through the rest of the season.

How has the effect been threw the season so far.....roller coaster. Bet his crossover is subpar.

Maybe because it didn't work? I don't mean to take this off-topic, but if the football team hadn't been working with this guy would we have gone 1-7 in Big Ten instead of 2-6?

“Generally, I help people understand how their thoughts and emotions impact performance,” said Aberman, who works with the Minnesota Twins and Gophers football, baseball and men’s tennis. “We know that physical skills and talent are important, but they’re not as important as people think. So we focus a lot on developing one’s emotional intelligence, their ability to make good decisions — particularly good decisions under pressure. We try to help them utilize their emotions to work for them and not against them.”

Former Gophers coach Dan Monson invited Aberman to talked to his team in 2005. He was with them when they upset Ohio State on the road in overtime that season. Minnesota suffered five losses in eight games after that big victory. But the Gophers won their last four regular season games and in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament to secure Monson’s only NCAA tournament bid.

“I’ve worked with a number of the (Gophers) teams over the last 20 years,” Aberman said.

I keep imagining Dogbert's sports psychology consulting service.

Keys to victory:
Oladipo injury/foul trouble
Zeller injury/foul trouble
Dre goes crazy
Ray Lewis feels bad that he helped Stanford kill us in the NIT and decides to give us a pregame and halftime speech.

How did we ever have such crazy stretches in our comebacks against Indiana and Michigan? Seems like that was a different season from where we are now.

Classic Tubby, thinking his team is executing his lame offensive sets so poorly that they need a psychologist to fix them. Hey, here's an idea Tubby, how about running that offense you ran at the start of the season? And putting more ball pressure on teams like you did at the start of the season? How about pushing the ball up the court like you did at the start of the season? There's an idea? But, no. A sports psychologist and increase playing time for Oto and Big Mo might be the answer in Tubby's mind. I think Tubby is the one that needed the psychiatrist. Hell, he should be straight jacketed and sent off to the insane asylum.

I find it odd how quickly people dismiss the mental aspect of sports like it isn't real.

You guys that have played know what a rebounding rim is correct? Our major problem is shooting the basketball. Tubby should've had the guys alternating days running offensive sets on a regular rim and then the rebound rim. With today's shoot around on a regular rim.
There's your " sports physiology " boys.

It's only a game, drama queen.

I agree with you as a former college football player and now an assistant coach it is easy for me to see how big of an impact the mental aspect of sports is and how important it is for players and coaches to have the right mental approach as well as physical approach.

Exactly. A lot of the time a guys whole shooting form will change if he's not comfortable an confident. Decision making will change. His attitude will change. His ball handling abilities will change.

Being confident and comfortable, IMO, are the two most important things for a player. If you aren't confident and comfortable in tough, uncomfortable situations on the court it is going to greatly impact your play.

Overreact much?
