Gophers football: a new phase in the coaching search - 1500 ESPN

Deep South, Part II

Maybe deep south is northern Alabama where one Terry Bowden resides.

• Maturi also has researched the "deep south", the source said. He wasn't quite sure what that meant.

For all we know, this could be a reference to this years Gopher Win-Loss record. We are definitely still in the Deep South even with a win over the pig farmers on Saturday.

I'd rather have him reference Out West (Harbaugh/Belotti).

so he's not going to hire a Tubby Smith like he stated he would in his press conference? pretty disappointing

Your the second person in this thread.

Who would you like to see hired then? Harbaugh said no, Belloti said no, Fulmer said no.

You are crazy if you think Petersen or Patterson is leaving TCU and Boise for Minnesota.

The only candidate I feel we should be upset about is not going after Leach. You have a legit gripe with that, but the problem is many programs have passed on Leach. These people who have passed on him obviously know more about football than us and they have found good reason not to pursue him.

oh yea the moment we've all been waiting for, the prolonged interview process where we continue to speculate, read tweets and articles, and sit at the edge of our chairs in hopes the news breaks soon!

Oh wait, thats what we've been doing all along. At least myself.

Hey Wheaton - do you know Tom Knoepke?

This thread has merit simply because it was started by Positively 4th Street. A great Dylan song and a great record store to boot. Come to think of it the last time the Gophers had a truly strong program they still sold records. Oh for the days you could walk into Hot Licks, or Northern Lights or Let it Be Records and spend an afternoon just listening, bring back Mike Hohensee.

Could deep south mean Mike Leach in the Keys? Can't get more south than that. This source firmly believes that the next coach will be Hoke, Calhoun, or Golden. I didn't go as strong with that (something like that I always want a 2nd source, which I'm efforting). But will here on the message board. Don't hammer me, but speculation easier to get by with on here.

Could very easily be wrong, but I got a gnawing feeling another name is going to arise in all this. Any info out there just seems to be intentional to me. We should know more when the season is over.

Of the three, was told that he is the least-expected to come here. Good point on the buyout... I was told any buyout will not prevent them from hiring their guy... is it though really as high as $2 mil.?

The quote from the Temple Prez to boosters was that the buyout was enough that if Golden left in the first three years, they would enough money to get a high quality replacement and university was very protected...then she said when pressed that it was way over a years salary in the first 2 years and about a years salary in years 3-4...his salary is about $1.15 mil per year.

Local media reported that it was Rich Rod/WVU type money if he left...but that wasn't confirmed by anyone at Temple.

I'd like to pursue Richt once he's fired

Golden's team is looking like crap tonight. I'm just not a big fan, and it's not because of tonight. Tonight only reinforces my earlier opinion. I would hope we concentrate our efforts elsewhere than Al Golden.

I think the only way Richt gets fired is if he loses to Georgia Tech, which is possible, but unlikely. I believe Nesbitt is still out for Georgia Tech.

He didn't state that - he said we're looking to make a Tubby Smith hire, we're not sure what the interest will be, but we will find out.

All indications are that we sought interest, and now that research is done and we are focused on realistic candidates.

That miniscule reference to Tubby Smith, in the context of a response to a press conference extemp question nonetheless, has been blown way out of proportion. Our ideal situation was not a promise - I'm puzzled why so many fixate upon that.

Richt isn't going anywhere...at least not after this season. I live in Georgia and the Bulldogs are my second favorite team behind the Gophers. I follow them closely. Our family doctor is a big contributor. Not connected to the tip top mind you, but close enough to hear stuff. The new AD down here is in Richt's corner and most agree that it is next year that is make or break for him. If he isn't UGA's coach next season, it will be because he decided to leave, not because he was let go. By all accounts, Richt loves Athens and will probably be here as long as UGA wants him...which should be at least one more season.

I agree. My only point would be that the only way Richt could possibly get fired is if the 'dogs absolutely crapped themselves against the Yellowjackets. I've always thought the possibility of Richt to be very remote.

Tubby came out of no where when he was hired, maybe this hire will be someone we least expect.

Then it's a good thing they're waiting. Probably a few candidates that aren't even possibilities right now that might pop up. Hopefully they don't rush it and end up missing out.

As an early Bronco M Guy

BYU Coach!!!

I find it comforting to know that people are starting to see the possiblity of Bronco as a strong possibility. The guy has an amazing record in his 5+ years as a HC. And, when his team started off as poorly as Minnesota, he has put together a turnaround in the year.

He has a low buyout, winning record, head coaching experience, good football mind, good character, young, dynamic, and high potential upside. Plus, I mentioned him, so, he must be the choosen one.

we i'm assuming by a Tubby Smith type he meant big name coach. the 3 referenced today aren't that. Myself I would rather see a bigger name because I don't think Calhoun, Hoke or Golden do much for the program as far as excitement, people in the seats, etc. My pick for a coach would be Sumlin but it doesn't sound like he's being too sought after by Maturi

Thanks for the update Sloogie. I'm not a big Hoke guy, but Calhoun and Golden seem like they would be a good hire.

In my personal valueless rankings, I'd like Sumlin, Calhoun, Golden, but without ever meeting them myself, it's a complete crapshoot. Hopefully the firm and Maturi get this hire right.
