"From a source Tuesday afternoon, here's the latest on the Gophers' search for a head coach:

• The research phase seems to be complete. They have a good idea on who is willing to take the job. Athletic director Joel Maturi has made some trips recently. My source was told that he has focused a ton of attention on Air Force (Troy Calhoun), San Diego State (Brady Hoke), and Temple (Al Golden). Presumably, Maturi hopped on an airplane for one reason: to talk to some/all of these candidates. The source wasn't sure how many others are in the mix. But clearly those three very much are.

• Maturi also has researched the "deep south", the source said. He wasn't quite sure what that meant. My own speculation makes me think of Southern Mississippi's Larry Fedora.

• Houston's Kevin Sumlin is spending more time thinking about the opening in Boulder. His interest in the Gophers, or lack-there-of, is telling. Also, the Parker Search Firm hasn't been in contact with Sumlin/his representative for some time. This all could be a part of the "game." However, this source said he would not bet on Sumlin landing here.

• It's becoming extremely likely that the "U" will hire a current head coach."

oh yea the moment we've all been waiting for, the prolonged interview process where we continue to speculate, read tweets and articles, and sit at the edge of our chairs in hopes the news breaks soon!

Oh wait, thats what we've been doing all along. At least myself.

Mississippi State/Ole Miss deep south maybe?

I still think the coach isn't any of those three.

If not Belotti or Leach, and none of the three untouchables (JH, GP, CP), I'd be happy with any of these three. I do hope they reach out to Jerry Kill as well to gauge his interest as well, but again, I'd be happy with any of these three.

Also, if in fact this speculation has some accuracy to it, then by now all three of these guys would have expressed interest in the job, which is also a good sign.

Could deep south mean Mike Leach in the Keys? Can't get more south than that. This source firmly believes that the next coach will be Hoke, Calhoun, or Golden. I didn't go as strong with that (something like that I always want a 2nd source, which I'm efforting). But will here on the message board. Don't hammer me, but speculation easier to get by with on here.

I have to think these or Georgia. Why get specific about SDSU, Air Force and Temple and then get all secretive (Deep South) about Larry Fadora who's never even been mentioned? That doesn't make sense to me, and I think Doogie misreads it. Richt, The Right Reverend or even Mullen are far more likely to need it to be hush-hush then Larry freaking Fadora.

Thanks for the update Doogie.

From Webster:
Definition of DEEP SOUTH
region SE United States —usually considered to include Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and all or part of the adjacent states of Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, & Texas

Ok to speculate. Appreciate the information especially if it's prefaced by the level of confidence you have in it. Keep it up, I'm becoming a fan.

I wish they'd get this damn thing over with already. Honestly, I'm just glad to hear we're not trying to hire some retard NFL coach like Bevell or Linehan. I don't understand why people suggest those numb skull clipboard toters for the job.

Wait. There's now a source saying "deep south," but the source doesn't know what that means?!? Sounds to me like the source must have a source, which makes the whole thing very questionable in terms of reliability.

Also, are we to believe Maturi is flying around talking to these people while they (except Calhoun) have games yet to play?

Put me down as skeptical on all counts. Fact or fiction - you be the judge.

Are you saying we're getting Urban Meyer???

Just passing along verbatim what my guy told me.

What exactly are you expecting? It's all second/third hand. It all probably contains elements of truth and should be taken with a grain of salt. That doesn't mean it's not relavent. I think we can all understand that and consider accordingly.

What in his statement leads you to think Larry Fadora? That name coming out of the blue just seems odd to me.

Thanks Doogie!

I am spreading the official rumor, Deep South means Florida Keys.

MIKE LEACH WERE COMING! haha jk

That is my own speculation entirely... haven't heard his name from anywhere... if I didn't write that clearly enough, that's my fault. I also wouldn't spend a ton of time on the "Deep South" ... way better chance the next coach is Hoke, Calhoun, or Golden.

Thanks for the info. It's fun to speculate. More fun that just waiting that's for sure.

Are you saying we're getting Urban Meyer???

Per Tweet I saw in my dreams:

Urban Meyer escapes the jaws of a disgruntled fan base (after just 1 bad season) for the friendly confines of TCF Bank Stadium. Meyer announces Northwestern vs. Minnesota (Sat Oct 13 2012)game to be held at Target Field, post game party at Deja Vu with free admission and dances for all recently graduated 11th year CLA students.

I think Urban Meyer would be a Tubby Smith hire haha

What if we hire Al Golden only to find he's stopped wearing ties on gameday?

These are the kinds of nightmarish scenarios that keep me up at night.

(I hope his contract would come with neckwear clause, obviously)

Doogie...do you have a second source on Golden being interested? I got the exact opposite here in Philly from what I deemed a reliable source...but that was about a week after Brew was fired. Has something changed with Golden? I was told to expect a press release last week from Golden regarding not being interested in moving on...and it didn't happen.

Also, is the U really willing to pay a reported $2 million penalty to get Golden out of his contract that he signed 9 months ago?

That's way, way more then 140 characters...I call BS. ;)

Too late. I'm now expecting Urban Meyer, Mark Rict, Nutt or at worst Mullen. We need an SEC coach for it to be 'Tubby Smith' like :D

and the meddling of super boosters. Lou Holtz advised Tubby to get out of Kentucky while he was on top. Maybe Tubby has passed along that same advice to UM?
