Gophers Bowl Projections: Week of 11/16

SBNation has the same Minnesota vs. Missouri matchup, but in the Music City Bowl instead of the TaxSlayer.

In the tier ahead of us they have Maryland playing Auburn in the Outback Bowl, with Nebraska playing USC in the Holiday Bowl, so even if we aren't able to win the division by winning the next two, even winning one, plus having Maryland, Wisconsin, and Nebraska lose, could be enough to get us into the next tier of bowl games.

Just need to prove we can hang. Epic to win two then we are #3 in the BIG.

Over on the Wisconsin board, the rumor is that if they're not going to get a top-6 bowl, Barry is lobbying for the Holiday, due to the often trips to Florida recently.

That makes sense. Wisconsin beating Nebraska was the best thing that could have happened for Michigan State's New Year's 6 chances. If Sparty wins their last two, now the only way they're not getting one of the top 6 bowls is if Wisconsin/Iowa/Nebraska/Gophers beats Ohio State in the Big Ten title game. 11-2 OSU likely still would be ranked ahead of Sparty, and that scenario would assure another team ranked below them (if it's Iowa/Nebraska/Gophers) would gobble up an auto bid to the New Year's 6.

The Citrus Bowl is the intriguing game in the Big Ten's bowl lineup, due to how frequently Nebraska (2011 & 12) and Wisconsin (2013) have appeared there. Nebraska has played in a Florida bowl three straight years, and Wisconsin in seven of the last 10. If the league is determined to keep at least one of those teams away from Florida this bowl season, and if Ohio State and Michigan State are playing in selection bowls, there could be an opening for an 8-win Minnesota/Iowa/Maryland to play in Orlando or Tampa.

Also, before their 3 straight Rose Bowl's, they played in Orlando in '09, '08, '06 & '05 (Champps Bowl for two of them, but still) & Tampa in '07 & '04.

San Diego vs. what will be a good Pac-12 team is a pretty good option if you're not in the top-6. I don't know how influential that type of lobbying can be by Alvarez & often times, the bowls will still win out & make a pick despite logic (Nebraska vs. Georgia in Jacksonville?), but it wouldn't shock me if this was the desire of WI.

Alvarez obviously can lobby quite well, since he gets his way on pretty much anything he wants. Bowls no longer have the power to extend invites without approval by the league office, so that will cut down on the shenanigans. If the Big Ten and Wisconsin do not want the Badgers playing in Florida this year, they will not play in Florida.

I have a question. IF the gophers win out and beat tOSU (presumably) in the title game, does that mean they're automatically locked to go to the Rose Bowl? How does this all work now that the Playoff is having one of their games at the Rose Bowl?

If we're not in the playoff, we're not in the Rose Bowl, regardless of if we win the Big Ten.

If the Big Ten champion isn't selected for the playoff in a year where the Rose Bowl is a semifinal game (like this year), then the champion will play in a different big bowl (like the former BCS bowls). This year that would likely be the Fiesta Bowl.

And due to the contract with the Orange Bowl over the next 12 seasons, the Big Ten champion cannot play in that game, so the Peach, Cotton and Fiesta Bowls are the eligible destinations for a non-playoff B1G champ in 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2023.

Hoping the Big Ten champ and/or Michigan State doesn't get paired with the "Group of 5" automatic qualifier. A no-win situation for a conference that desperately needs to enhance its credibility by beating Power 5 teams (especially the SEC) in significant bowl games (Citrus & Outback certainly fit that category, too).

That means that the Gophers possible could win the Big Ten, for the first time since 1967, and get to go to a big time bowl, and end-up in the Peach or Cotton Bowl? That's just not right.

Please Jike, tell us you were just being funny. That's just not right…..

I want a game against and SEC team, so I like the Auburn and Missouri projections. I'd love a chance to shut up some SEC fans. A lot of us (including myself) think the Gophs are underrated and the SEC is overrated, this would be a great chance to show it.

Yeah, not happy about it. I'm fine with the playoff, but why can't those games exist outside the bowl structure? I hate everything about a Rose Bowl that isn't Big Ten vs. Pac-12. Part of me is rooting for Oregon and Ohio State to end up in that semifinal just to keep the traditional matchup.

I want LSU in a bowl game. Living in New Orleans, I'll admit it may be for selfish reasons, but having seen LSU vs. Bert last weekend, it's a game the Gophers could definitely win and get credit for beating a marquee program.

I do think that will get avoided simply due to numbers. I think the bowl that gets stuck with Marshall knows that attendance may be iffy, so if it's the Chick-Fil-A/Peach, the best way to handle that is with an SEC school, both with ATL an SEC alumni hub and easy to travel to.

These projections would be much more instructive if you knew the win/loss assumptions the writers are making. I think the Gophers go 1-1 in their last two games, so, I'd be curious to see where a writer slotted us if he/she also thought we would go 1-1.

I want to in into a better bowl. Not back in to any due to other teams losses. I too think we can beat many good SEC teams. That is my preferred match up. LSU, Auburn, Missouri all sound good to me.

If the Gophers go 1-1 (beating Nebraska) and Nebraska goes 1-1 (beating Iowa), the Gophers still probably don't jump Nebraska and wind up in one of the top four Big Ten bowls (assuming 2 Big Ten teams are in the top six bowls (at large and playoffs)). The Gophers would end the season with four losses and Nebraska would finish with three. Likely Nebraska and either Wisconsin or Mich State would go to the Outback and Capital One respectively unless Alvarez somehow managed to get the Holiday instead.

There may not be much of a difference in the Gophers' bowl destination whether they finish 1-1 or 0-2.

I think there are big differences between those teams. Minnesota may be roughly on par with Missouri but I doubt they are at Auburn's level. Making a prestigious bowl means nothing if you lose, particularly if you lose badly. The two Michigan schools looked completely out of their league a few years ago when they were both demolished by SEC teams on New Year's day. I'd rather avoid that.

Last year people griped about having to play 6-6 Syracuse but losing to them demonstrated to the outside world that we didn't deserve a better bowl. I just want to win a bowl. This program hasn't done that since before Mason departed. We're going to finish no worse than 7-5 so any of the bowls we would go to will involve a credible opponent (mid-level SEC team or upper level PAC 12 team) that won't be easy to beat.

I agree that the bowl win is important, but I also want us to get out there and compete with elite competition, and I think we can do it. I don't like hoping to hide from good teams. TCU thumped us out of conference this year, but I wouldn't have been any happier replacing that game with another garbage OOC game against the likes of NMSU or EIU.

I really don't care what bowl game we are in but we need to play well and win! It has always been my opinion that if you are not in the big game it doesn't really matter what game your in. I know that isn't a popular thought but a bowl game is about ending the season strong heading into the offseason recruiting and work out programs. I would much rather play a PAC12 team and get a win than play an SEC and lose. Not saying we can't beat an SEC school but I am saying the win is far more important than who we play especially if it's against a major5 school.

Any loss is a bad loss and in a bowl game it's often the lasting image of a season.
